On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Scared of a Spider Bite Birthing a Thousand Spiders on Your Face? In ‘The Manitou,’ It’s Worse.
At a certain point in time, we lived in a world where we could wander into a movie playing on some random network (Rip Upn) and get sucked in with no knowledge of what it was, the behind-the-scenes stories it held, or even a whiff of IMDb trivia. It was a sad, bleak era. That is how I happened upon “The Manitou” one lazy summer Sunday. Everything about this oddball horror movie...

Even after 32 years since the release of Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series, the four seasoned show still seems like a quality watch. Worthy of celebration and binge-watching, the 1992 series brought in dark visuals, compelling stories, and incredible characters that impressed fans, once and for all. But among all the profound things that the show did, Timm indefinitely created a better version of one Batman villain.

Yes, we’re talking about Mr. Freeze who previously appeared in Adam West’s 1966 show Batman. Played by three different actors in West’s three seasoned show, the villainous character was unfortunately turned into a joke, which was later perfected by Bruce Timm in his Batman: The Animated Series. Voiced by the late actor Michael Ansara, Mr. Freeze in Timm’s series eventually got his deserving respect as an iconic villain.

Characters on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" frequently like to speak in code or drop hints rather than get directly to the point, so let's be clear here. When it comes to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," worst is a highly relative term. In many, many ways, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is the best "Star Trek." While it could never break the same ground as the original (and had a few clunker episodes due to its longevity and exhausted writers), "Deep Space Nine" tells the best story, has the best overall cast of characters, and its best episodes are more plentiful than those of most of its franchise brethren. Regularly dealing with moral compromises, no-win scenarios, and cultural differences that cannot always be bridged, it's the kind of show that might have dismayed original "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, who wanted the future of humanity to look perennially optimistic.

Hello, everyone! August 23rd is a quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases, but that doesn’t mean that this week’s offerings aren’t pretty darn great all the same. Scream Factory has put together a killer Collector’s Edition 4K release for Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers and Kino Lorber has put together reissues of their Blu-ray box sets for seasons one and two of The Outer Limits, which genre fans will definitely want to pick up.
Cheers!
Dog Soldiers: 4K Collector’s Edition
A group of soldiers dispatched to the Scottish Highlands on special training maneuvers face their biggest fears after they run into Captain Ryan – the only survivor of a Special Ops team that was literally torn to pieces. Ryan refuses to disclose his mission even though whoever attacked his men might be hungry for seconds. Help arrives in the form of a...

When Batman & Robin came out 25 years ago in the summer of 1997, it pretty much acted as the death knell for the Dark Knight on the big screen. Following on the heels of 1995’s Batman Forever, this silly, sub-juvenile horror show from director Joel Schumacher killed any good will built up by the earlier Tim Burton Batman movies and created such an awkward situation for Warner Bros. that they ultimately decided it would be better to reboot the franchise eight years later by letting Christopher Nolan go in startling new directions with Batman Begins (2005).
Since then we’ve had Christian Bale as Nolan’s Batman, Ben Affleck as an older, more vengeful Caped Crusader in the Snyderverse, and most recently Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s ultra-dark take about a younger Batman still finding his way. Each of them has had their supporters and detractors, but all have managed to...

It’s here, the second half of the science fiction TV series from the 1960s, restored and remastered. It’s really only half a season and the creative team has been swapped out, but several gems are every bit as good as episodes from year one. Plus acting disc producer David J. Schow ladles on the extras like thick gravy … including promos and TV spots not seen since 1963 and ’64.

How much do I love director William Girdler? Let me count the ways: his sense of grandeur in the face of modest budgets, his good naturedly humorous takes on the genre, his willingness to pay “homage” even when it costs him lawsuits, and the stone-cold truth that he got better at his craft with each and every film he made. Case in point: Day of the Animals (1977), the follow up to his smash hit Grizzly (’76) that quintuples down on the attacks in a righteous mélange of Disaster and Animals Gone Wild flicks.
Produced and released by Film Ventures International in May, Day of the Animals (Aka Something Is Out There) had a budget of $1.2 million and brought in only less than triple the cost. Critics were unkind as well, calling the film derivative and goofy. Well, yes, thank you, it is those things; but it’s also a Girdler, which...

The matriarchal psychodramas of the ’60s bled into the ’70s with alliteration-laden (and questioning) efforts such as Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?, What’s the Matter With Helen?, and the sole directorial effort from noted horror author John Farris, Dear Dead Delilah (1972). Vinegar Syndrome has brought this entertaining Southern Gothic back from the grave with a solid new Blu-ray release that's sure to please fans of ripe, pithy dialogue and surprising splatter.
Dear Dead Delilah starts out with the reveal that teenaged Luddy has murdered her mom because she didn’t want her heading out to see any fellas; we then flash forward 25 years and a now middle-aged Luddy (Patricia Carmichael – Petticoat Junction) has been released from the sanitarium; walking around, she is hit by a stray football in a park belonging to a member of the wealthy Charles clan, and whisked back to their estate. There Luddy is introduced to the family,...

When I think of some of my favorite B films of the 1970s, my mind tends to drift towards the works of the late filmmaker William Girdler. This man made nine movies in six years before his tragic death in ’78 at the age of thirty; chief among them Abby (’74), Grizzly (’76), and Day of the Animals (’77). Now, quantity obviously doesn’t equal quality, and he made a few outright stinkers. But he was exciting to me because he became a better, more confident filmmaker with each film; this is especially evident with his final release, The Manitou (1978), your typical ancient Native American little person demon growing out of the back of a woman’s neck who fights the heroes in space with laser beams kind of flick. You know the type.
Independently produced, The Manitou was released by Avco Embassy in late April, with a June rollout across North America, and worldwide the following year.

The hugely ambitious Star Trek: Deep Space Nine has no shortage of classic episodes. We have a complete guide for you.
Spoilers lie ahead for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Overlapping with both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's seven seasons had some very high points, It also had some very low ones that strayed a bit too far from the core of Star Trek for some fans, yet gave the show a unique texture that some savor.
If you only ever watch 25 stories from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, these are they, at least in my opinion – the only rule being that multi-part episodes count as one story (but great big multi-season Dominion flavored arcs don't!)
Many Star Trek fans have long been hopeful that CBS may yet announce the remastering of Deep Space Nine for high definition and thus Blu-ray.

Spoilers lie ahead for Star Trek: Deep Space 9
See related Little Me: My Life From A-z by Matt Lucas review
Overlapping with both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's seven seasons had some very high points, It also had some very low ones that strayed a bit too far from the core of Star Trek for some fans, yet gave the show a unique texture that some savour.
If you only ever watch 25 stories from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, these are they, at least in my opinion – the only rule being that multi-part episodes count as one story (but great big multi-season Dominion flavoured arcs don't!)
With the 50th anniversary of Star Trek as a whole this year,...

Nathan Darrow - who is best known for his role as Meechum, the loyal bodyguard of the Underwoods in Netflix's "House of Cards" - has scored the recurring role of Victor Fries (aka Mr. Freeze) on the Batman prequel series "Gotham" on Fox.
In the series, Fries is one of Gotham's preeminent cryogenics engineers who is ferociously smart but struggles to make meaningful connections with others. The exception is his wife Nora whom he loves unconditionally, though she has tragically fallen ill with a terminal disease.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Sanders and Michael Ansara have played the character on screen before, with his most celebrated incarnation being in the 1990s "Batman" animated series.

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' 2015: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' movie is a domestic box office bomb: Will it be saved by international filmgoers? Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie: Bigger Box Office Flop Than Expected.”) This past weekend, the $80 million-budget The Man from U.N.C.L.E. collected a meager $13.42 million from 3,638 North American theaters, averaging $3,689 per site. After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake:...

'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' box office: Bigger domestic flop than expected? Before I address the box office debacle of Warner Bros.' The Man from U.N.C.L.E., I'd like remark upon the fact that 2015 has been a notable year at the North American box office. That's when the dinosaurs of Jurassic World smashed Hulk and his fellow Halloween-costumed Marvel superheroes of Avengers: Age of Ultron. And smashed them good: $636.73 million vs. $457.52 million. (See also: 'Jurassic World' beating 'The Avengers' worldwide and domestically?) At least in part for sentimental (or just downright morbid) reasons – Paul Walker's death in a car accident in late 2013 – Furious 7 has become by far the highest-grossing The Fast and the Furious movie in the U.S. and Canada: $351.03 million. (Shades of Heath Ledger's unexpected death...

There are plenty of interesting directions a return to the Babylon 5 universe could take. Here are a few suggestions...
I read somewhere that J.M. Straczynski writes every day. That’s not surprising given his extensive body of work for television, motion pictures, novels and comics. He is best known for Babylon 5, of course. I remember what a lot of people used to say about Babylon 5, “How much can happen on a space station?” Well, a lot actually! And after five seasons of the original series, a bunch of made-for-tv movies and a couple of spin-offs, there are still plenty of stories left to tell.
That is why I was excited recently to read that Joe (apparently, he thinks you’re cool if you just call him Joe) was going back to work on Babylon 5. My excitement soon turned to dread when I found out that...

The Top 5 Coolest Animated Incarnations of Mr. Freeze!by Matt MacNabb
Mr. Freeze is one of the most enigmatic and emotional villains in the Batman's rogues gallery. Orginally dubbed 'Mr. Zero' when he was first introduced to comic book fans back in 1959. His appearances on the 1966 Batman television show altered his name forever to Mr. Freeze! The real birth of this once one-dimensional character, however, came in the Batman cartoons. Legions of Gotham will now countdown the top five animated appearances of the tragic Dr. Victor Fries!
5. Young Justice
The Young Justice cartoon ended too quickly after just two seasons, but Batman fans were treated to a few appearances by the king of cold before it was done! Mr. Freeze appeared in three episodes of the popular series, voiced by Keith Szarabajka. This beefed up older version of Freeze was captured by Batman and Robin and transported back to Arkham Asylum,...

Well, lo and behold, we've gathered the most exciting movies and TV shows being added to America's most popular streaming service, straight from Netflix themselves.

A rousing cocktail of bombs and bikinis, topped with a slick 70s score, The Doll Squad (ask Seduce and Destroy) was produced, directed, written and edited by low-budget exploitation mogul Ted V. Mikels, the man responsible for The Corpse Grinders (1971) and Blood Orgy of the She-Devils (1974).
Pre-dating the likes of Charlies Angels (which was clearly influenced by Mikels’ feature), the film sees a group of female special agents brought together by the CIA for a special mission after a space shuttle launch is sabotaged by the megalomaniacal Eamon O’Reilly. The titular Doll Squad are tasked with bringing down O’Reilly and his private army which has warned that if its demands are not met it will strike again. Closing in...

So sad. The woman who voiced Edna Krabappel on ‘The Simpsons’ for 13 years passed away on Oct. 25 in her home in Los Angeles.
We’ve lost one of the most recognizable voices in TV. Marcia Wallace, an actress who found her calling giving life to the cranky teacher on The Simpsons, died on Oct. 25. She was 70 years old.
Marcia Wallace Dead At 70
Marcia passed away in her Los Angeles home with her family by her side, a close friend of hers told our sister site Deadline.
“She passed at 9 p.m. last night due to complications from breast cancer of which she was a long and proud survivor and advocate for women and healing,” the friend Cathryn Michon said. “Ironically, it was during breast cancer awareness month during which she was always a funny ray of hope for so many. I’m devastated.”
Marcia was just a week away from her 71st birthday.

In the world of horror cinema, the best way to fight a monster–be it supernatural, human, or natural one–is with a character that possesses special knowledge and skills. These experts, recruited into battle by other characters or colliding with the conflict intentionally, are the savants of the horror world.
Examples of savant characters include David Warner’s bat expert Phillip Payne in Nightwing, Zelda Rubinstein’s spiritual medium Tangina in Poltergeist, Matthew McConaughey’s dragon slayer Denton Van Zan in Reign of Fire, Lin Shaye’s paranormal investigator Elise Rainier in Insidious, and Otto Jespersen’s monster killer Hans in Trollhunter.
This article, divided into three sections based on what type of monstrous force is being fought, focuses on the greatest savant characters the horror genre has to offer.

In an age of films concerned about zombies, alien invasions, and the coming of the apocalypse, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea might seem a little innocuous. But although the title suggests aquatic fun, it’s really about saving the planet from imminent destruction. That’s something today’s audience can connect with, or at least admire.
They say that you can’t judge a book by its cover. The same is true with a movie. You can’t judge it by its poster, the DVD packaging, or even the title. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is a great example of this phenomenon. The title alone conjures up images of a deep sea adventure, exploring uncharted territory, meeting fascinating and exotic creatures. While nearly the entire film does take place at sea, it really isn’t any of those things that the title or artwork otherwise suggest.

So sad. One of the most decorated stars in Broadway history passed away on Aug. 24 in West Chatham, Mass. She was 87 years old.

And her talents did not go unacknowledged.

Charlton Heston movies: ‘A Man for All Seasons’ remake, ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ (photo: Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur) (See previous post: “Charlton Heston: Moses Minus Staff Plus Chariot Equals Ben-Hur.”) I’ve yet to watch Irving Rapper’s melo Bad for Each Other (1954), co-starring the sultry Lizabeth Scott — always a good enough reason to check out any movie, regardless of plot or leading man. A major curiosity is the 1988 made-for-tv version of A Man for All Seasons, with Charlton Heston in the Oscar-winning Paul Scofield role (Sir Thomas More) and on Fred Zinnemann’s director’s chair. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays Thomas More’s wife in the TV movie (Wendy Hiller in the original) had a cameo as Anne Boleyn in the 1966 film.
