In all of Stephen King’s massive catalog, few works are as bleak as his 2010 novella collection Full Dark, No Stars. Rather than supernatural entities, these four dark tales feature human monsters and deal with the horrors that live inside the human heart. Two novellas serve as mirror images of each other, exploring the female response to predatory men. “Big Driver” follows cozy mystery writer Tess Thorne on a mission of revenge against the stranger who raped her and left her for dead. “A Good Marriage” centers Darcy Anderson, a happily married woman faced with a horrifying choice when she discovers her husband’s secret life.
Both novellas were faithfully adapted into feature films in the year 2014 – for better or worse. Premiering on Lifetime, Big Driver tackles King’s rape-revenge story with Maria Bello staring as the vigilante writer and Olympia Dukakis as her literary detective. Ann Dowd and Joan Jett...

Stephen King isn’t just an author by this point: He’s an institution, a legacy of classic horror stories that capture our imaginations, fuel our nightmares, and speak — when he’s at his best — to our shared experiences as flawed, emotional beings. The best King stories scare so many of us that we all feel connected, and even the worst are usually pretty fun.
King’s books and short stories quickly became hit movies, many of them celebrated in their time, and some flopped so hard that hardly anybody remembers them. Cataloguing every adaptation might be a fool’s errand, so we made some tough choices and decided to focus only on his theatrical releases.
And even then, there are so many King adaptations that it gets tricky. We’re not including the made-for-tv films (which are legion), and the sequels to King’s work rarely have anything to do with the source material,...

'Trumbo' movie: Bryan Cranston as screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and Helen Mirren as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. 'Trumbo' movie review: Highly entertaining 'history lesson' Full disclosure: on the wall in my study hangs a poster – the iconic photograph of blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, with black-horned rim glasses, handlebar mustache, a smoke dangling from the end of a dramatic cigarette holder. He's sitting – stark naked – in a tub surrounded by his particular writing apparatus. He's looking directly into the camera of the photographer, his daughter Mitzi. Dalton Trumbo's son, Christopher Trumbo, gave me the poster after my interview with him for the release of Peter Askin's 2007 documentary also titled Trumbo. That film combines archival footage, including family movies and photographs, with performances of the senior Trumbo's letters to his family during their many years of turmoil before and through the blacklist, including his time in prison. The letters are read by,...

The Brave One: Roach Recapitulates Black List Era Hollywood
Examining the past from the safer perspective of our more enlightened period, Jay Roach’s Trumbo is a salutation to famed screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, a man who defied the blacklist following Joseph McCarthy’s witch hunt in Hollywood. Unfortunately the film doesn’t seem worthy of the talented man it’s lionizing. Some might conclude, now more than ever, a remembrance of Trumbo and those brave souls who continue to stand against a corrupt system despite personal losses, are important. But then, one would expect a much more unruly and rebellious film, something harpooning Hollywood’s greedy, superficial sugarcoating rather than just another period send-up. Despite a sympathetic and altogether enjoyable performance from Bryan Cranston, Roach dithers around with a host of stereotypes and clichés, presenting mimicry of cinematic golden days sporting a cavalcade of caricatures not unlike Sacha Gervasi...

Today we are talking to the gifted composer and lyricist behind the earth-shattering score for Broadway's biggest recent hit, Hedwig amp The Angry Inch, the versatile and passionate Stephen Trask. Shedding considerable light on the development of the idiosyncratic rock musical, Trask discusses his influences and the organic way in which the outre show developed from humble beginnings at downtown bar Squeezebox in the mid-1990s, to Off-Broadway hit at the turn of the new century all the way to the rapturously received feature film adaptation, and, now, the 2014 Broadway production. Trask also details his affection for Tony Award-winning lead actor Neil Patrick Harris and looks ahead to the new leading man donning the titular wig, Andrew Rannells. Additionally, Trask also shares news on the forthcoming sequel to Hedwig currently being developed with John Cameron Mitchell and teases some of what we can expect from the hotly anticipated theatrical experience.

Golden Years: Askin Adapts Stephen King’s Domestic Dilemma
For those hoping for resurgence in the quality of Stephen King stock, the unique promise of A Good Marriage is not the ticket. Sporting King’s first adapted screenplay of his own work since 1989’s Pet Sematary, his customary flourishes are stamped all over it, including the predilection for the perspective of the underdog and plenty of trawling around in the private headspace of the favored character, which inevitably leads to moments of exaggerated artificiality. True, King has (or had) a unique flair for creating intriguing and sometimes empowered female protagonists, but the suburban housewife anchoring the lukewarm scenario here isn’t nearly as well-honed as the film necessitates.

There was a moment during A Good Marriage, adapted by Stephen King from his own novella and directed by Peter Askin (Company Man), where I thought to myself, you know, I'm kind of digging this. In the aforementioned scene, gas station lights and a restaurant sign in the background provide a cool ambience as an unidentified woman walks out to her car, the screen fading in from black to reveal a noirish gray color palette. A dull, eerie piano score kicks in as the woman gets into her car and drives away, unknowingly tailed by another vehicle from which the action is captured. Unfortunately this is the opening shot of the film, and it is followed shortly by a cliched opening monologue, a generic party sequence, an uncomfortable sex scene, and some seriously hokey dialogue. I'm not sure either King or Askin had terribly lofty ambitions for the film anyway,...

Steven King’s books and films are rife with zombie babies, witches, vampires and werewolves. This lengthy list of creatures now includes your average next door neighbor, the serial killer.
In Stephen King’S A Good Marriage, Darcy (Joan Allen) and Bob (Anthony Lapaglia) Anderson, a happily married couple, are enjoying a 25th anniversary party hosted by their two children. Their daughter is getting married in a few weeks. The Andersons are empty nesters with a lovely home, Bob has a successful job as an accountant and is a coin collector – theirs seems to be picture perfect marriage, except for one thing… Bob is a serial killer. He’s brutally murdered 12 women and goes by his alter-ego, “Beadie”. He’s also been taunting Maine’s Attorney General with notes signed from him since his first killing in 1980.
Afterwards, the couple returns home for a personal celebration and Darcy talks of...

Stephen King's body of work is formidable, and he's still churning out novels at an admirable pace, which makes this adaptation of A Good Marriage mildly surprising. It's not bad, but it's puzzling why director Peter Askin ("best" known for 2007's Trumbo) and King himself bothered to adapt a nondescript novella from the Master of Horror's autumn years. "Nondescript" certainly describes Bob (Anthony Lapaglia) and Darcy (Joan Allen) Anderson, a couple enjoying their 25th anniversary. This is King, however, so there's also a Mysterious Creepy Guy shadowing the couple who may be connected to the serial killer called "Beadie," who recently slew his 12th victim. It's not much of a spoiler to say Bob, who leaves Ned Flanders-esque notes advising his wife how to park the...

Stephen King may be one of our most prolific writers, but he tends to let others get the ol' finger blisters when it comes to adapting his tales for the big screen. One exception? The forthcoming, Peter Askin-directed A Good Marriage, for which Uncle Stevie did decide to pen the screenplay version of his novella. “I knew Peter Askin and I liked him,” King recently told EW, explaining the origin of the project. “About a thousand years ago, John Mellencamp and I got involved with this musical called Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. We didn’t know anything about musicals,...

Four interesting tidbits coming atcha that we neglected to discuss for multiple reasons. If you hadn't yet heard them, they'll feel like brand new news to you.
In what is clearly understood to be an awards-traction move, Jon Favreau's sleeper hit Chef will be coming back to theaters this Friday in wide release. I'm not sure it has the critical oomph to win any nominations and it didn't have the box office size to make that a non-issue (a la gargantuan hits like My Big Fat Greek Wedding) but could it sleeper hit its way into, say, The Screenplay race? I'm realizing I neglected to consider it at all there which is an obvious mistake. I had a really good time watching it with friends though; it's an easy sit and safe for diverse groups of viewers. A bunch of new trailers today for a variety of non-tentpole genre fare - some of it aims to be big, some aims to be in awards contention, some will probably skip theatrical.
Nicolas Cage continues his run of period action films with Arclight Films' "Outcast," an English-language 12th century China-set thriller without a subtitle (or Chinese accent) in sight. Cage and a mulleted Hayden Christensen play ex-Crusades warriors who team up to help the children of a deposed Chinese Emperor to battle their murderous uncle who has seized the throne. Cage sports an attempt at a British accent, has the nickname 'The White Ghost,' and breaks out into several Nic Cage-isms.
Katie Holmes plays the sweetest and most proper elementary school teacher who moonlights as a lethal vigilante in the dark satire "Miss Meadows". Things become complicated for the gun-toting dainty lady when she gets romantically entangled with the town sheriff.

There have been umpteen adaptations of Stephen King’s works, but very few arrived with a screenplay penned by the Top Dog of Terror himself. One that does is A Good Marriage, the tale of a terrible family secret.
Earlier this week, King revealed to EW why he chose to adapt his novella for the big screen. Now, there’s a trailer for the film, which debuts in cinemas and on VOD on Oct. 3.

As the Master of Horror, Stephen King has seen countless adaptations of his works. And with long anticipated versions of The Dark Tower, It and The Stand in the works, it’s easy to forget that some of King’s lesser known stories are also getting the big screen treatment.

There are plenty of familiar Stephen King adaptations in the works (including a prequel and sequel to The Shining), but A Good Marriage somehow flew under all of our radars. It’s based on one of the author’s many short stories, and King actually adapted the story himself (as he did for Pet Semetary and Cell) for this movie.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, King had this to say about adapting his story:
“I’ve seen enough movies adapted from my work to know that the things that work the best are the things that aren’t too long and aren’t too short. Some of the stories, when they get expanded, they go in the wrong direction, and with the novels, if they’re really expansive, a lot of times it’s like sitting around a suitcase and trying to get everything in. A Good Marriage is about 100 pages long,...

With big studio adaptations of high-profile titles like "The Stand" and "It" in the works, it's easy to forget there are a number of smaller-scale Stephen King-based movies on the way. One of them is called "A Good Marriage," and well....it's certainly a movie, that much we'll say. Joan Allen, Anthony Lapaglia, Kristen Connolly, and Stephen Lang star in this one about a regular married couple whose world is rocked when the wife discovers a horrifying secret about her husband — he's a serial killer (though, what serial killer leaves all their clues in a not-so-hidden box in the garage?). This leads to Bing searches (who uses Bing!?), discoveries on the interwebs, and Lapaglia acting crazy in a movie directed by Peter Askin ("Company Man"). Hopefully, the cast — who we really like — will elevate this thing, because otherwise it looks a bit dodgy. "A Good Marriage" opens on October 3rd,...

Though author Stephen King may not be at the top of his game lately, that hasn't stopped him from being a prominent force in pop culture on film and television. Every year there's a new adaptation of one of his books or short stories, and this year is no different. But this time, King actually wrote the screenplay for A Good Marriage, a pretty conventional thriller starring Joan Allen and Anthony Lapaglia. The film follows a happy couple whose seemingly perfect life is thrown into upheaval when Darcy (Allen) discovers that her husband may actually secretly be a serial killer. Seems pretty bland and generic to me. Watch it? Here's the first trailer for Peter Askin's A Good Marriage, originally from Apple: When her husband (Anthony Lapaglia of "Without a Trace") of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson (Joan Allen of...

With 2013 almost behind us, it’s time to start looking forward to the future. By this time last year, Stephen King had announced two new novels for 2013 – Joyland and Doctor Sleep – but we ended up with so much more: The Dark Man, Hard Listening, “Afterlife,” “Summer Thunder,” plus surprises like an unfinished manuscript surfacing and King’s earliest fiction sale, “The Glass Floor,” being reprinted by Cemetery Dance. What’s in store for 2014? We’re in the same position we were in last year: two new books announced, and not much more. Still, 2014 looks to be unique in every sense of the word: for the first time since 2011, we have a year without any sequels. However readers felt about The Wind Through the Keyhole or Doctor Sleep, there’s something exciting about going into two new Stephen King novels completely blind. Well, maybe not completely. What do we know about these novels?...
