Syfy and mockbuster producers The Asylum are back with yet another blockbuster movie cash-in with Monster Island, their take on Godzilla: King of the Monsters… only Without Godzilla to save the day! The plots are virtually identical: in this case a deep-sea drilling expedition gone wrong uncovers a monstrous giant starfish that wrecks havoc on humanity, an awakening that is followed by even more kaiju arising and terrorising Earth – forcing a team of scientists to find the legendary creature, the Living Mountain, and get it to battle the menace.
Oh and did I mention that not only is there a giant starfish but he spews lava/magma and is probably responsible for all the worlds volcanic disasters? And we also get fire-breathing monsters,...

Following the showing of Empire of the Sharks at Horror-on-Sea I got a chance to talk with actor Jack Armstrong about how he got involved in the film, what attracted him to the role and what it was like working on the set of the film.

We have come out from the screening for Empire of the Sharks, how do you think it went?
It went really well, it was good to see it on the big screen for the first time. I have seen it once or twice before, but to see it with the directors and the people who made it so special is the right way to see it I would say.
How did you get involved in the film originally?

Mickey Rourke is a great actor, but he hasn’t really done anything that memorable since his Oscar-nominated role in The Wrestler. It’d be great to see him take on another great film and maybe this next project will be it.
Rourke will star in a supernatural thriller called Unhinged and will play a character named Dr. Elder, “a prominent psychiatrist at a state-run hospital who wrestles with madness and a dark supernatural force as he races to stop an escaped patient from butchering five people held hostage in a remote house.”
That actually sounds like it could be a great and intense horror film, and it seems like a role that Rourke could slip right into. This wouldn’t be Rourke first horror film. In 1987 he starred in the movie Angel Heart, which you should watch if you haven’t seen it yet!

Courageously and resolutely fighting for your beliefs, both physically and emotionally, can be a powerful advantage in achieving your goals, especially when you’re battling your callous competitors. But when the line between your supposed allies and your alleged opponents becomes increasingly blurred, you’re forced to reconsider what connections are actually benefiting your ultimate goals and motives. That gripping emotional exploration is powerfully examined through the questionable actions of actor Robert Davi’s seemingly admirable character in the new action thriller, ‘Awaken,’ which is now available on DVD. ‘Awaken,’ which was was co-written and directed by Mark Atkins, follows Billie Kope (Natalie Burn), a skilled martial arts expert who mysteriously wakes up [ Read More ]

You know what I love about this clip from Mark Atkins' indie action flick Awaken? It's the bad guys in the background behind Darryl Hannah. They are so goddamn badass they are still wearing their shades. In the middle of a thunderstorm. You know you are badass when you do not have to worry about bumping into anything, probably because it will fall over out of fear. So good. I bet Jason Landon wishes he had a pair just to cover his bloodshot eyes. Dude looks 'rekt'. A group of young adults wake up on a deserted tropical island in this suspenseful thriller about black markets and body parts. Billie, a skilled martial arts expert, had been searching for her missing sister, Rina, when she was attacked and...

I believe this new key art for Mark Atkins' film Awaken has set a new benchmark for skull islands everywhere. It certainly is the skulliest of all. There is no denying that this island is a skull island. You almost was to call it Skulls Island but then rowing teams will show up and realize that there had been a spelling error on their part. Let's just save them the shame and call this island 'A Really Skully Island'. "Mulder?"No, no, no, Ms. Anderson. Go back home. A few story details and a low resolution concept poster are available for Mark Atkins' film, Awaken. Atkins is a cinematographer and director, who is no stranger to horror (Knight of the Dead). His latest deals with an urban legend, the harvesting of human organs. And, the early graphic shows a hunter and an isolated island. As well, fans of film will recognize several of the film's stars, including: Edward Furlong, Daryl Hannah, Vinnie Jones, Jason London and veteran actor Michael Paré. Story details are relegated to a few sentences. However, several strangers find themselves on an uninhabited island. Here, hunters track these people, hoping to score a kidney, a liver and even a heart. These organs will make a killing on the black market! This title moved into post-production earlier this year. So, a trailer is likely to come this way shortly. As well, 7Heaven Productions and Archstone Pictures are producing this title.

The Asylum is the studio behind such cheap rip-offs as "Transmorphers" and "Snakes on a Train." It's now back with "Jack the Giant Killer," which is a rip-off of Bryan Singer's upcoming "Jack the Giant Slayer." And today we have a trailer for the new movie, showing that it also borrows from Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim." Check it out below. Plot: A giant beanstalk brings Jack to a land in the clouds filled with snarling, evil beasts. When the creatures make their way to Earth, Jack must figure out how to get back down before they destroy his hometown and everyone in it. "Jack the Giant Killer" is directed by Mark Atkins (Sand Sharks), and stars Jane March (Color of Night) and Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire). It's set to be released on VOD and DVD/Blu-ray on March 12th, just eleven days after Singer's "Jack the Giant Slayer" hits theaters.

The Asylum’s Jack the Giant Killer likely won’t prompt legal action from Bryan Singer’s similarly titled blockbuster since it appears to be set in the early 20th century, the giants are dinosaur-like monsters, and I’m unaware of any version of “Jack & the Beanstalk” that includes a giant robot.
Jane March (Color of Night), Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire), and newcomer Jamie Atkins star in writer-director Mark Atkins’ (Sand Sharks) Jack the Giant Killer, coming to VOD/DVD/Blu-ray on March 12th. That’s 11 days after Jack the Giant Slayer beanstalks theaters worldwide.
So how is The Asylum version of this classic fairy tale different?

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by The Asylum. Director/writer: Mark Atkins. Cast: Chelsea Vincent, Peter Pedrero and Philip Coc. You better Belize it, this small country has their own special forces unit and they are going deep into the jungles with adventure journalist Julia Evans (Chelsea Vincent) in search for an Alien Origin. Tagging along is her own film crew to document this operation and what they discover is a graveyard filled with a tantalizing mystery. Unfortunately the intrigue went out the window. Although one subplot is clearly defined, another isn't. The only indication that this movie is about invaders from outer space is because of the camcorder Evans and the army find. After looking at the recording, which contains hints of some human victim being abducted, the only thing they can consider doing is to dig deeper. This lone scene is perhaps the...

Now the British summer has made a belated reappearance, we can expect a few downsides such as hay fever, sunburn and insect bites - but no flying pests in our gardens can rival Dragon Wasps. And a can of the standard repellent probably won't do much good either.
This giant creature feature is written by Mark Atkins. His previous genre outings include numerous hit-inspired 'mockbusters' such as Snakes on a Train, 30,000 Leagues Under The Sea, War of the Worlds 2, Allan Quartermain and the Temple of Skulls, Princess of Mars (an alternative version of John Carter), Battle of Los Angeles and Avh: Alien vs Hunter.
He's also been involved in several dragon-themed productions including Dragonquest, Merlin and the War of the Dragons, and Dragon Crusaders.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water... Who needs water when a prehistoric species of sand-swimming sharks begins prowling the beach? Sand Sharks is poised to be the schlockbuster of the summer.
Corin Nemec (Mansquito) and Brooke Hogan (2-Headed Shark Attack) star in Mark Atkins’ horror comedy Sand Sharks, a movie that has “Syfy original movie” written all over it yet looks to be bypassing that channel altogether. Not sure why. Might have something to do with the movie being more comedy than horror; Syfy movie execs, by all accounts, have a weird thing about how their movies should never be intentionally funny.
Synopsis:
Jimmy Green, a prodigal party boy, is throwing the spring break festival of a lifetime on the island of White Sands. Little do the hundreds of teenage party-goers know, an underwater earthquake has cracked open a crater beneath the ocean’s surface.

Piranhaconda isn’t the only new b-movie creature trailer dropping today. Gigantic fire-spewing wasps terrorize soldiers in the trailer for Dragon Wasps. Is it wrong I think this looks more fun than Piranhaconda?
Typically wasps are known for their stingers. Stingers look to be the least of your worries here what with these dragon wasps earning their namesake with their ability to project fire like flying flamethrowers.

Sand Sharks
Stars: Corin Nemec, Gina Holden, Julie Berman, Brooke Hogan, Nick Hogan, Vanessa Lee Evigan | Written by Cameron Larson | Directed by Mark Atkins
When you get a movie to review called Sand Sharks you can already guess what is coming. This is going to be one of those crazy shark films that use dodgy CGI and bad acting but just don’t seem to care. They don’t make these films to be good, if anything they ham it up to insane levels and just go with it. You’ll either groan or just go with it and love it. I’m one of those people that usually groan but I gave Sand Sharks a chance.
The stories for these movies are pretty barebones at best but I’d say this one actually tried to some extent, being that it stole the Jaws idea and runs with it with...

The search for the bottom of the creature feature barrel continues with “Sand Sharks”, a film which explores the long pondered philosophical question as to what would happen if sharks could in fact swim through sand. Boldly tackling this controversial issue are director Mark Atkins (also responsible for the charming “Battle of Los Angeles”) and writers Cameron Larson (“Mysterious Island”, “Alligator X”) and Joe Benkis (“Shadow People”), with an intriguing cast of television stars and vaguely familiar genre faces that includes Corin Nemec (“Supernatural”), Brooke Hogan (“Brooke Knows Best”), Gina Holden (“Saw 3D”), Julie Berman (“General Hospital”), Nick Hogan (“Hogan Knows Best”) and Vanessa Lee Evigan (“Journey To The Centre Of The Earth”). For the brave or curious, “Sand Sharks” hits region 2 DVD in January through Chelsea Films. The plot, such as it is, proudly follows the time honoured “Jaws” formula pretty much to the letter, kicking off with a...

If you’re the sort of seedy individual who likes to spend your free time watching low-budget monster movies featuring small clusters of has-beens and semi-celebrities, then director Mark Atkins’ upcoming creature feature “Sand Sharks” is definitely the sort of thing you need to keep a close eye on. Sure, the movie appears to be nothing more than a series of loosely-connected sequences involving CGI sharks noming down on some unsuspecting party-goers, but that’s precisely what you’d expect from something called “Sand Sharks”. Needless to say, I’ll be watching this nonsense as soon as I possibly can. I’m sure you already knew that. Behold this needlessly verbose plot synopsis: An underwater earthquake cracks open a crater deep beneath the ocean’s surface unleashing a prehistoric predator. Is it too much too hope that Sand Shark star Brooke Hogan's famous father might show up at the climax of Mark Atkins' film to slam the titular beast down in a suplex? The idea of Hulk Hogan wrestling a shark makes no sense, I agree, but neither does the idea of prehistoric sharks that live beneath the sand preying on Hogan's scantily clad daughter. It would, however, be awesome.Roaming the halls of the Cannes Marche du Film is an often surreal experience with booth after booth of high minded art film nestled up against films which are, shall we say, of a slightly different mind. This is one of those. Though there's no trailer available yet we do have an official synopsis:An underwater...

Is that a scantily clad Brooke Hogan in this first poster for Sand Sharks? The answer is probably yes, as Sand Sharks takes a page out of Piranha 3D's playbook.
