Music composer Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, not only as a celebration of his musical prowess, but also in acknowledgment of his role in defining the golden era of Hindi film music.

The year was 1986. Rajesh Khanna was no more the phenomenon but the aura that he had created for himself through the songs that he had crooned on the silver screen was manifest on a screen made out of sacks on which were sewed tattered white sheets. The location- Chakia, a hinterland about 80 kms from Varanasi as the crow flies. The film shown was Raaz in a village godown. His songs were rewinded umpteen number of times, the spool could not withstand the pressure, and the film did not reach its logical end. However, nobody complained, as the fans were enthralled in Rajesh Khanna’s magic.
Were he to be alive today he would have been 82 years of age; his physical self may not be there, but his magic continues to swoon the audiences.

Unlike Hollywood, where musicals are a separate genre, no Hindi film is complete without a full suite of songs – and they are what keeps a film alive in the minds of the people long after it has met its fate at the box office. Amitabh Bachchan fans may not recall the plots of his old landmark films, but the songs still strike a chord.
On the Big B’s 80th birthday, let us revisit some of his musical hits from his first decade of super and megastardom, where the songs were not just romantic interludes with his lady love of the moment, but also served various other purposes.
These helped him to express a range of moods, reveal his innermost yearnings, his philosophy of life, advancing the plot as action takes place in the background or surreptitiously, or evoke humour to lighten the mood.

Recreated by Fahad Samji and Sandeep Sirodhkar, with superb hilariously apt lyrics by Farhad Samji and Vayu and signature music by ?Rockstar? Devi Sri Prasad, and rendered superbly by Mika Singh and Farhad. The video that accompanies ?The Bhoot Song? is as zany and whacky as it can get.
It features all the main leads, Akshay, Bobby, Ritesh, Kriti sanon, Pooja Hegde, Kriti Kharbanda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui (as Ramsey Baba), the exorcist who is ?given the task of curing Akshay ?aka Harry/Bala from the ghost ?of his past life and is simply mind-blowing as he mouths his iconic popular dialogue ?Kabhi kabhi toh lagta...

Dream Girl
Starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Nushrat Bharucha, Annu Kapoor, Vijay Raaz, Abhishek Bannerjee, Raj Bhansali, Nidhi Bisht
Directed by Raaj Shaandilya
Way back in 1977 when Dream Girl meant Hema Malini, Dharmendra sang Anand Bakshi’s truly romantic line Kissi shaayar ki ghazal , Dream Girl…. 42 years later the ceaselessly enterprising Vijay Raaz plays a self-styled shaayar who bores everyone with his cheesy lines, his own wife being his prime victim. The potty-level poet is one low life among many in a film that tells you it’s okay to seek dubious companionship when loneliness it at its peak.
There is something inherently amusing about people being forced into roles that they were not born to play, Ayushmann Khurrana has lately mastered the art of being cornered by a corny karma….Or, if it not his karma then someone close to him, like his Dad in Badhaai Ho who impregnates his mom...

We now dive into Part 2 of the songs of Bollywood. 90s Bollywood had a hefty past of classic films and songs to surpass. From Dilip Kumar walking along a cliff, Dev Anand comically falling down, Raj Kapoor thinking about death and legacy, to Rajesh Khanna staring out at the sea (on another cliff), Sunny Deol stomping his feet as his gang mates went up the hill and Rishi Kapoor righting the wrongs of his past life through a song. How do you top that and still be the lovable, funky, fun and completely absurd Bollywood we knew and love… Easy! From the soft, easy listening music and some jazz combinations of the earlier films, the music and dance sequences transposed to low budget big band music taking on the blasting of the base club beats Ko-ing the western world with a bigger dose of desi swag. As well as dancing queens and dhak dhak,...

Pyar karne wale kabhi darte nahin jo darte hain woh pyar karte nahin. 32 years ago Meenakshi Sheshadri had lip-synced Anand Bakshi’s famous words about boundless, unchained, unstoppable love.
Now it’s the striking debutant Athiya Shetty who mouths these words, though we don’t see her saying it. Just feeling it.
Which is really in the fitness of things. This 2015 adaptation of Subhash Ghai’s 1983 musical blockbuster captures the impish bustle and the unbridled impetuousness of first love from the original, and merges these into something slightly sinister and dark.
Because, folks this is 2015. Love at first sight is not a tenable target for a lifetime of togetherness. There are more practical considerations to be gone through before love conquers the pay cheque. Nikhil Advani’s remake of a film about a highly melodratic love is rendered into practical pastel pastiche of passion pain and rebellion.
Hero looks and feels posh.

Film lyricist Anand Bakshi is regarded as the most successful Indian film lyricist having written 4000 songs in a career ranging 45 years. A look at his work reveals his mastery over his art. Remember Chingari Koi Bhadke....(Amar Prem), Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Bandh Ho...(Bobby), Teri Pehli Nazar Ko Salaam... (Ek Duje Ke Liye), Tujhe Dekha To...(Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) etc.
Anand Bakshi was a master of penning lyrics, within minutes, he could write to the tunes of music directors and in the process many a times he would cram mindless words like Dum Maro Dum...., Achcha To Hum Chalte Hain....Mere Jeevan Sathi Pyar Kiye Ja... etc incidentally the songs would prove hit.
One such song that he set to the tune of Laxmikant-Pyarelal was for the movie Amir Garib (1974) staring Dev Anand and Hema Malani. The song was Baith Ja Baith Gayi, Khadi Ho Ja Khadi...

Along with being the movie that many use as an example of the magic of Bollywood, the music of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is also synonymous with Hindi films. In fact, ask many a Hindi film fan about the music of Bollywood and the first song that comes to mind, we would bet 9 times out of 10, would be Ddlj’s ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam’. To celebrate the film playing continuously for 1000 weeks we thought we would relive the magic of Jatin-Lalit’s music with the original song videos! Check them out!

As part of our look at a century of Indian cinema, here are some of our all-time favourite classic film soundtracks
Barsaat (1949)
Tragic love story Barsaat (Rain) was 25-year-old actor Raj Kapoor's first hit as a director and launched Bollywood's greatest playback singer Lata "Nightingale of India" Mangeshkar (who went on to record thousands of film songs over a career spanning seven decades and counting). Kapoor may have made finer films (Awaara, Shree 420), but Barsaat's songs (marking the debut of music directors, Shankar Jaikishan) of vulnerability, innocence and heartache, captured newly independent India's fragile imagination. Many consider Barsaat to have the greatest film songs of all time.
Pakeezah (1972)
Pakeezah (Pure) is the story of a courtesan, or a wronged woman with a good heart, in the Mughal era. Lata is on playback duties for heroine Meena Kumari (who died just after its release) and the combination of real-life...

Anand Bakshi who wrote more than 4500 lyrics during his long career of 40 years, out of which at least 3000 songs were superhits, would now be a part of a comprehensive documentary that his close friend and creative collaborator Subhash Ghai will make. But yes, I don't want to make a dry boring staccato documentary that no one would watch. This was a man who wrote some of the most entertaining songs for our films. I want the documentary on Bakshi Saab to be seen by generations that have not grown up with Bakshi's Saab's words in the mouth, as we have." Ghai wants to humanize Bakshi in the documentary. "I've put together a team of like-minded Bakshi fans.
