Maisie Williams, who rose to fame at the age of 12, reflected on her experience portraying Arya Stark in “Game of Thrones.” Having played the role for the entirety of her teen years from 2011 to 2019, she said she had trouble feeling “comfortable in my own skin.”
“I was so lost for so long and I knew that I was, and when I couldn’t pin down what I felt my identity was within that, it brought me a lot of discomfort,” Williams told The Sunday Times. “It’s hard to even put myself back there and talk about how tough it was just because I think it’s done.”
The 26-year-old actor furthered that “playing characters has been so enthralling,” but she did that during “a really formative time in my life,” making it difficult to form an identity outside of acting.

Maisie Williams reflected on the dark side of child stardom this week, saying she struggled to parse her own identity from that of her Game of Thrones character.
Williams shot to fame at age 12 following her casting as Arya Stark in HBO’s beloved fantasy series, which ran for the duration of her teenage years from 2011 to 2019. The result, she told The Sunday Times, was a difficult journey to feeling “comfortable in my own skin.”

Fashion fans are sure to be scrutinizing every detail of The New Look, the 10-episode Apple TV+ series that tells the story of Christian Dior (played by Ben Mendelsohn) launching his eponymous Paris label with the now-legendary 1947 New Look collection that inspired the production’s title.
It’s among the reasons both creator Todd A. Kessler (Damages, Bloodline) and costume designer Karen Serreau (The Serpent Queen) knew they had to approach Dior’s seminal post-World War II designs with an unrelenting attention to detail. In other words, the participation of the brand that Dior built was essential.
“Dior was very generous in opening up its archives to us,” Serreau tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The way Todd has crafted the story, early on we see Christian talking to an audience at the Sorbonne in 1955, with a runway showing of several designs, and then of course later we see the debut showing of the 1947 collection.

At the top of Episode 1 of Apple’s “The New Look,” a title card flashes some weighty words: “This is the story of how creation helped return spirit and life to the world.”
But Todd A. Kessler’s drama series is barely that. “The New Look” is largely insular, despite taking place during a turbulent era that still affects millions around the world, centering figures who certainly left their marks on culture and history — but the vague thesis statement sounds like just that; the kind of sweeping, half-formed idea that a high school student might retroactively tack on to the introduction of an essay.

Plot:: This emotionally thrilling series reveals the shocking story of how fashion icon Christian Dior and his contemporaries, including Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain, and Cristóbal Balenciaga navigated the horrors of World War Il and launched modern fashion.
Review: Fashion design has found great success as fodder for reality series and romantic comedies. Films like The Devil Wears Prada, Robert Altman’s Pret-a-Porter, and Ryan Murphy’s limited series Halston have looked at the intricacies of the fashion world, mostly from a contemporary standpoint. The new AppleTV+ series The New Look is designed as the start of an anthology series by looking at the tumultuous period after World War II when French fashion icons Christian Dior and Coco Chanel reinvented what we consider haute couture. With a stellar cast led by Ben Mendelsohn and Juliette Binoche, The New Look should have been an instant frontrunner for series of the year. Instead,...

Maisie Williams transformed into Catherine Dior, Christian Dior’s sister, for The New Look, the AppleTV+ series that tells the story of how Dior, Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain and Cristóbal Balenciaga navigated the horrors of World War II and launched modern fashion.
In 1941, Catherine Dior joined the Resistance, risking her life every day to be a part of a covert network titled F2 that gathered intelligence for the Allies during the war. She was arrested by the Nazis in July 1944 and imprisoned at Ravensbrück concentration camp where she was tortured by the Gestapo.
In order to play this role and physically depict Catherine’s struggles, Williams lost 25 pounds through a regimen, carefully overseen by medical professionals, that included regular blood tests and heart rate measurements. It was a perfect Hollywood afternoon. There was sun, a slight breeze, and some of the most famous faces on the planet. And for Demna Gvasalia, there was fear.
The Balenciaga creative director has proven himself one of the most adept and blunt bottlers of our zeitgeist for the past decade, and his artistic interpretations are among the most polarizing and debated in fashion. It’s perhaps understandable then that after the brand’s first Los Angeles show in its 105-year history, he was “very afraid” to talk to the locals.

Disney+ has shared the official trailer for ‘Cristóbal Balenciaga,’ the original drama series that recreates the life and legacy of the Guetaria-born Spanish creator, one of the most iconic fashion designers of all time.
In the series, created by Lourdes Iglesias and 12-time Goya award winners Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño, and Jose Mari Goenaga (“The Endless Trench”), actor Alberto San Juan plays Cristóbal Balenciaga, an enigmatic and extraordinarily talented man who defied the social conventions of the time and revolutionized the world of fashion.
The original series begins as the designer presents his first Parisian haute couture collection in 1937. He has left behind a successful career in his ateliers in Madrid and San Sebastian dressing the Spanish elite and aristocracy. However, the designs that had set the trend in Spain don’t quite work in the sophisticated fashion empire that Paris has become, where Chanel, Dior and Givenchy are the benchmark of haute couture.

Disney+ execs in Europe appeared outwardly upbeat about Bob Iger’s return to the House of Mouse during their first public outing since Bob Chapek’s shock ousting some 10 days ago.
This is despite the fact that Iger is reportedly looking to change course when it comes to streaming strategy. He is said to have told employees at his first town hall on Monday he wants to re-focus Disney+ onto profitability as opposed to subscriber growth, a development that potentially puts him at odds with the platform’s current strategy, particularly internationally where Disney has been building an impressive (but expensive) stable of local originals.

Of those, 40 have already been commissioned, produced or released. These include forthcoming dramas about fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld (produced in France...

Balenciaga won the couture sweepstakes again this season with an electrifying show stacked with celebrity models including Kim Kardashian, Nicole Kidman, Dua Lipa and Selling Sunset star Christine Quinn.
Wednesday’s spectacle should solidify Demna’s reputation as a master of high-low cultural curation — and one of the most exciting thinkers and practitioners in fashion today. ViacomCBS International Studios is developing a TV series depicting the life of groundbreaking Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga with British director James Kent (“Testament of Youth”) on board to direct and Spain’s Frida Torresblanco to serve as executive producer.
Balenciaga was born in 1895 in Getaria, a fishing village in northern Spain, and moved to Paris in 1937 where he made his mark as an innovative master of haute couture revered by colleagues and contemporaries such as Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy and Coco Chanel.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Balenciaga reached the height of his career by unveiling previously unseen styles, fabrics and shapes, such as the tunic, the “baby doll” and shift dresses. Unlike many other designers, Balenciaga was very private and elusive, having given only two newspaper interviews during his 50-year career. On the day of his death, in 1972, Women’s Wear Daily ran the headline “The king is dead.

ViacomCBS International Studios is developing a series on Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga and has attached Testament Of Youth director James Kent to helm and Pan’s Labyrinth producer Frida Torresblanco to executive produce.
Written by Rebecca Pollock and Kas Graham, the project — which is slated to shoot in 2021 — will depict the life of Balenciaga, who helped lead a revolution in fashion, with his precision and perfectionism earning him the admiration of contemporaries, including Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, and Coco Chanel.
In 1917, at the age of 22, he established his first fashion house in San Sebastian, and later opened fashion houses in Madrid and Barcelona, before moving to Paris in 1937, where his work won the admiration of an influential cosmopolitan clientele. In the 1950s, Balenciaga unveiled never-before-seen styles and shapes, which were considered radical designs at the time.
Torresblanco said: “I have long admired the genius of the greatest Spanish fashion designer in history.

Following the drama’s first screening in Los Angeles on November 24, “Phantom Thread” arrived in New York City on Sunday, November 26, complete with a rare appearance from star Daniel Day-Lewis. Daniel Day-Lewis is known to go to extreme lengths when preparing for his roles, staying in character on set and getting inside their mindsets. That seems to be the case for his alleged final performance, in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread,” in which the soon-to-retire actor plays fictionalized couturier Reynolds Woodcock. According to longtime costume designer Mark Bridges, the mid-fifties period piece found Lewis learning how to drape in preparation for his performance — just not exactly the way he should have.

For veteran Australian director Jocelyn Moorhouse, black comedy “The Dressmaker” was like “Unforgiven” with a sewing machine. In the movie, a Paris fashion designer (Kate Winslet) returns to her dusty, hateful outback town in the early ’50 to exact revenge with haute couture style.
For the film’s two costume designers, Margo Wilson (who focused on Winslet) and Marion Boyce (who handled the rest of the wardrobe), “The Dressmaker” was like “Cinderella” meets “Pygmalion.” At first, Winslet transforms the shopkeeper’s dowdy daughter (Sarah Snook) into a princess. Then the other wicked women pay Winslet to use her sartorial magic on them.
“She had been working for many years as a dressmaker in exclusive Parisian fashion houses, so she needed to look different from the rest of the town,” Wilson told IndieWire. “Her mentor was Madeleine Vionnet, one of the leading designers [between the Wars]. Her wardrobe was very simple, rich, royal colors with no florals or patterns.

The Savannah College of Art and Design (Scad) has announced that the short documentary film, "Ovation for Oscar: An Exhibition at Scad Museum of Art," created by Scad alumni and students, is premiering at the Marché du Film at the Cannes Film Festival. The film will screen on May 21, in Palais F, at 11:30am and 1:30pm.
Oscar de La Renta was born on July 22, 1932 in the Dominican Republic. He was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and successfully led his own world renowned fashion house, as well as Balmain, from studios based in New York and Paris. He died on October 20, 2014.
Focusing on the first posthumous museum tribute to legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, the documentary chronicles the creation of the exhibition, “Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style,” as it was prepared exclusively for the Scad Museum of Art by Scad trustee André Leon Talley. The filmmakers also documented the making of the highly anticipated, soon-to-be-released Rizzoli book, "Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style," written by Talley and photographed in conjunction with the exhibition.
This intimate look behind the scenes reveals the nuances and sophistication of the demanding, deadline-oriented work of fashion photographers, white-gloved art handlers and discerning curators as they research, assess, mount and produce a major museum exhibition honoring the late designer, artist and cultural icon.
De la Renta’s friendship with Scad encompassed more than a decade. He was recognized as the first recipient of the André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2001 Scad Fashion Show. Subsequent winners have included Tom Ford, Miuccia Prada, Vera Wang, and Marc Jacobs.
The film, told from the perspective of Scad student and former Oscar de la Renta intern Sloane Mayberry, features observations by fashion experts and others who worked closely with the late designer including Alex Bolen, CEO of Oscar de la Renta, LLC.
Scad President and Founder Paula Wallace notes, “This film, created by Scad students and alumni, comes full circle by celebrating the legendary designer who did so much to support our students and their careers. He was one of those rare spirits who was interested in everything and everyone, and his work is a beautiful reflection of a life fully lived.”
More than 60 unique de la Renta ensembles from the closets of First Ladies Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush; celebrities including Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey; and best-dressed women Anna Wintour, Mercedes T. Bass, Lynn Wyatt, and Annette de la Renta are revealed throughout the film and celebrated at the exhibition unveiling. In the film, close friends of the de la Renta family and special guests reflect on the late designer’s life, understanding of beauty, femininity and elegance, and his role as a mentor to future designers.
The 21-minute film was created by Scad film and television students and alumni: producer Tyler Reid (M.F.A. candidate); director Ryan Curtis (B.F.A. 2013); editors Hanny Purnomo Boyer (M.A. 2009), Craig Boyer (M.F.A. 2009) and Laura Minto (B.F.A. 2015) and director of photography Zach Graber (M.F.A. 2012).

Jose here. Legendary designer Oscar de la Renta passed away yesterday at the age of 82. In a career that spanned decades, he became a champion for the curvy female shape, similar to those he had seen growing up in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In what can only be described as an Almodóvar-ian experience, he spoke many times of how he grew up in a matriarchy, "I was surrounded by sisters. My childhood was all women", all of whom helped inspire him as he seeked a career in design under the wing of Spanish icon Cristóbal Balenciaga. By the mid-60's, de la Renta had become a favorite of Jackie O. and as his fashion empire grew, it became known for its devotion to old-style glamour. As gowns became narrower and more modest,...

Nicolas Ghesquière's designs were at once flouncy and edgy – and with Kristen Stewart on board the label is cutting edge
Barbed wire snaking across a dress front, dancing flamenco ruffles, boxy crop tops, super-sleek vanity cases and Kristen Stewart in a lemon yellow leather biker jacket perched on the front row – Balenciaga's show for next spring/summer had everything a modern fashion house needs: a celebrity mascot who oozes cool, accessories likely to cause waiting list meltdowns and interesting, beautifully made clothes that will look good in magazines but aren't scary enough to frighten off women affluent enough to afford them.
Balenciaga is often described as a bit "sci-fi", but this show kicked off with a lot of very un-Star Trek-like ruffles. A black dress with a frilled peplum turned to reveal a slash detail in the skirt's hem while ruffled skirts were matched with edgy squared-off...

The perfection of a rose-tinted past, Doris Day’s costumes in Pillow Talk (1959) are some of the most exquisite ever worn on screen. They personify her immaculate character and symbolise the remnants of a dying era; opulence, optimism and the changing face of urbanised fashion.
Costume designer for Pillow Talk was Bill Thomas, although, as became standard with Doris Day pictures, he was not directly responsible for creating her outfits. That job fell to celebrated costume/fashion designer Jean Louis, earning him a ‘Gowns By’ credit on the film. Louis was known for his stylish and often deceptively simple garments, including most famously Rita Hayworth’s strapless black sheath in Gilda (1946). He even created Marilyn Monroe’s sheer ‘President’s dress’, immortalised at John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday celebration in 1962.

As spoilt yet charming Frances Stevens, Grace Kelly wears a total of ten separate costumes in Alfred Hitchcock’s lavish romantic caper To Catch a Thief (1954).
All outfits were designed by easily the most famous costume designer who ever lived, Edith Head. Typical for Head, Frances’ outfits are a mix of steady, daring and occasionally bizarre, including a pale yellow one-piece swimsuit with ‘cats eye’ sunglasses, an unflattering blue tunic trouser suit and wild 18th century gold lamé gown with piled up sausage curls wig.
For our coverage, three of the more interesting ensembles have been chosen, each reflecting a facet of Frances’ personality and in some way informing the narrative. Number one is an ice blue chiffon gown worn for her first face-to-face encounter with apparently retired...

Christie’s auction house are selling several design sketches by the renowned Edith Head. Each are for roles played by Grace Kelly in Alfred Hitchcock movies, one used in To Catch a Thief (1955) and three in Rear Window (1954). What an ideal early Christmas present. For yourself.
From To Catch a Thief is a watercolour and pencil sketch of the black halterneck beach ensemble with wide brimmed hat worn by Grace Kelly as Frances Stephens. Estimated to reach £6,000 – £8,000.
The most famous and popular designs from Rear Window are all available. First is a sketch of the extravagant ‘Paris dress’ Kelly wears as Lisa Fremont. It is an opulent gown of layered chiffon and tulle with delicate floral sprays. Again, estimated to reach £6,000 – £8,000.
Second is her celadon green, Cristóbal Balenciaga inspired two-piece suit with silk wrapover halterneck – which, rather shockingly for the time, is also backless. Expected to hit £5,000 – £7,000.

Lindsay Lohan is so smitten with fashion she's considering opening her own Paris, France boutique. The actress/singer, whose love for the latest styles led to her changing three times during the Oscars ceremony in March, admits she wants to fill a high-end store with top designer clothing - just so she can be a part of the business. She tells fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar, "I'd only do it (start her own store) if Karl Lagerfeld was interested or Tom Ford. Or Alexander McQueen. Or Jean Paul Gaultier. Or Proenza Schouler." Lagerfeld obviously is interested in Lohan - he recently shot her for a spread in America's Interview magazine. And the actress recently offered to work at a Chanel store, selling Lagerfeld's clothing. But she admits there's just too much fashion out there that interests her to work with just one designer. She adds, "Yves Saint Laurent's collection is genius for fall. Balenciaga is amazing. And I love Rick Owens and Alessandro Dell'acqua and Giambattista Valli and Roland Mouret." Lohan accepts that opening a store would save her a lot of money: "I often style myself and my friends. I could go bankrupt from buying all these clothes. (If I open a store) I can sell my own clothes."...
