- American playwright, popular in the 1920s and '30s. He was the son of Irish immigrants and graduated from Yale University in 1919. Barry began his writing career contributing articles to the Daily News and the Literary Magazine. He is best remembered for his sophisticated comedies, notably "Holiday" (1928), and "The Philadelphia Story" (1939).
