There are two upcoming movie musicals that, for a long time, I've wanted to make into motion pictures, should someone with money be willing to give me the funds to make them -- Into The Woods and The Last 5 Years. I'm both nervous and excited to see how directors Rob Marshall and Richard Lagravenese, respectfully, have interpreted the material I hold so close to my heart. I am especially nervous for Into The Woods, given Marshall's less than impressive track record. If someone is going to screw up something I cherish, it should be me. Of course, there are far more than two musicals I have a deep connection to. Some have already been made into films, like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Les Miserables, but there is a vast collection of musicals I have thought could make fantastic films, but have never been made.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood The Roundabout Theatre, NYC
I was a real fan of the 1985 Broadway production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood and have been eagerly looking forward to the Roundabout revival. For the most part, it did not disappoint.
Drood, of course, is based on Charles Dickens's final, unfinished novel.
To tell the story onstage, composer/author Rupert Holmes has devised an ingenious conceit. The show takes place in 1895 in a British music hall, called London's Music Hall Royale. The troupe is giving a performance of its new musical production based on the Dickens novel. It allows a delightful mix of a dark, Gothic, melodramatic story along with the boisterous comedy of the British music hall. The results are highly atmospheric and great fun. Since the Dickens novel was never finished, the ending of the show is determined by audience votes on several matters, another nifty idea from Holmes,...

Thursday night, The Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of playwright Mary Chase’s 1944 Pulitzer prize winning play "Harvey" opened to an array of reviews, most of them less than flattering. As some may remember, "Harvey" beat Tennessee Williams’ "The Glass Menagerie" to a Pulitzer prize in 1945, a fact that still baffles today, and which the revival doesn't make up for. Roundabout’s "Harvey" stars “The Big Bang Theory” nerd Jim Parsons, who follows in the footsteps of the ineffable Jimmy Stewart, quite large shoes to fill might I add. Parsons stars as Elwood P. Dowd, an amicable alcoholic who claims to be friends with a "pooka," taking the form of a tall, imaginary rabbit whom Elwood calls Harvey. Elwood’s sister, Veta Louise (played by the oddly cast Jessica Hecht), tries to commit Elwood to a sanitarium, but a comedy of errors ensues, changing the family for the better.

Starring in a Broadway play is already daunting — so headlining said play in a role made famous by Jimmy Stewart must be absolutely terrifying. But The Big Bang Theory’s two-time Emmy winner Jim Parsons appears calm, cool, and collected as Elwood P. Dowd in the ad campaign for Roundabout Theatre Company’s upcoming Harvey (one of EW’s most anticipated shows of the year). Check out EW’s exclusive first look at the poster for the production below.
Look at him. He’s handsome. He’s natty. He’s smiling. What a catch! Just ignore the shadow of the...

William Friedkin's 1975 interview with Fritz Lang
If you happen to be in the market for Fritz Lang Christmas ornaments, they do exist, though they don't come cheaply. At any rate, much of the third issue of Movie: A Journal of Film Criticism (the successor to Movie, the print journal Ian Cameron edited from 1962 to 2000) is given to the second part of its Fritz Lang dossier featuring — and I should mention before you start clicking that these are PDFs — Stella Bruzzi on Fury (1936), Vf Perkins on You Only Live Once (1937), Edward Gallafent on The Return of Frank James (1940), Adrian Martin on Scarlet Street (1945), Peter William Evans on The Big Heat (1953), Deborah Thomas on Human Desire (1954) and Peter Benson on Moonfleet (1955).
Also in this issue: Christian Keathley on Otto Preminger's Bonjour Tristesse (1958), Alex Clayton on Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake and John Gibbs on Jamie Thraves's...

Mirror mirror on the wall. Who is the fairest of them all? Well it certainly ain't me, since my sun-baked-Gollum-in-a-wig visage smashed the mirror into tiny fragments only this morning. In Doctor Who-land though, put The Hand Of Fear or The Stones Of Blood in a mirror and you get...
Terminus!
Tenuous link? Maybe. But then I'd argue that those two Tom Baker stories are made up of three strong parts and a weak final one, whereas Terminus works on the reverse principle in most fans' eyes: an excellent first part goes steadily downhill into a runaround that's so dull it could be hosted by Mike Reid at the local Tory Party Conference (well, in 1983 anyway). Although "G-g-g-g-g-g-gooooo!!!" is a pretty appropriate phrase to bellow at Cameron and his cronies.
Is Terminus that bad though? It's not a Davison story that springs to mind instantly. A bit of memory...
