- Peter Bergman was born on November 29, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. - He was one of two children of Oscar Bergman and Rita Bergman. His parents hosted a radio show in Cleveland called "Breakfast with the Bergmans." His father was also a reporter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio.
- He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He taught economics there as a Carnegie Fellow. He later attended Yale School of Drama as a Eugene O'Neill playwriting fellow. He moved to Los Angeles, California in the 1960s to pursue a writing career.
