- Jazz/swing trumpeter.
- Inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1985.
- Was at one time a member of Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra.
- Started on violin, later switching to trumpet.
- His brother Don was a drummer, his mother a pianist.
- Had a lifelong affliction with alcoholism, was constantly in and out of hospitals and died at the age of just 33 from cirrhosis of the liver and pneumonia.
- His theme song, "I Can't Get Started" -- with vocals and famous trumpet solo performed by Berigan -- was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1975.
- Formed his first band in New York in 1937, having previously played in the orchestras of Paul Whiteman, Freddy Rich, Abe Lyman, Hal Kemp, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman.
- Was featured on CBS radio in broadcasts of Saturday Night Swing Club, 1936-37.
- Berigan had a knack for discovering excellent musicians. Those who began their careers with his band include pianist Joe Bushkin, arranger Ray Conniff and drummer Buddy Rich. Berigan was extremely popular with his musicians, possibly because of his easygoing and kind nature (never a disciplinarian like Goodman or Miller!). Sadly, lack of discipline in his personal life would cost him dearly.
