It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 24 is George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which tells the origin story of the wasteland warrior princess before her run-in with Mad Max starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke and Alyla Browne. Also hitting theaters is family film “The Garfield Movie” and Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” which follows a straight-edge professor who discovers his calling as a fake assassin starring Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio and Molly Bernard. Two films getting limited releases this week are Disney’s “The Beach Boys,” a documentary about the legendary surf-rock band, and “Solo,” a foreign...

Glen Powell remained the king of grassroots publicity at an Austin, Texas, screening of his new Netflix movie, Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man.” The leading man hit the red carpet at the event accompanied by his family, but his mother and father decided to troll their son with signs directed at the press line that read: “Stop trying to make Glen Powell happen” and “It’s never gonna happen.”
It appears Powell’s parents have been paying attention to all the press attention their son has been getting over the last few years. Every time Powell appears in a movie, be it Netflix’s “Set It Up” or Tom Cruise’s blockbuster “Top: Gun Maverick” or Sony’s rom-com “Anyone But You” with Sydney Sweeney, the press can’t help but say he’s got bona fide star power and is the next big thing. A fun trope of contract killers in movies is the stealthy way the assassin moves about in plain sight while under the guise of another person. This is the trope that Glen Powell‘s new Netflix film, Hit Man, plays on. Powell and Richard Linklater wrote the film, which was inspired by an unbelievable true story. Our own Chris Bumbray felt ecstatic about this movie in his film review from the Toronto International Film Festival, saying, “Notably, despite being a movie about killing, the film is pretty non-violent and charming. If there was ever a feel-good movie to be made about murder-for-hire, this is it.” You can read the rest of his review Here.
Netflix has just released the new trailer for the comedy. The synopsis of the film reads,
“A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits.

Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) reunites with filmmaker Richard Linklater for Netflix’s Hit Man, a dark comedy so weird it’s hard to believe it’s inspired by a true story. The one-minute teaser stars Powell as a hitman who enjoys pie and promises to eliminate a pretty potential client’s problems. But all is not as it seems…
Glen Powell and director Richard Linklater previously worked together on Fast Food Nation, Everybody Wants Some!! and Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood. With Hit Man, Powell also collaborated with Linklater on the screenplay.
“When I was 14, I worked with Rick for the first time,” said Powell in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “And at that point, I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, he’s one of the greats. I’m getting to be on a film set, a Richard Linklater film set.’ And now it’s 20 years later,...

With Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, the charismatic Glen Powell has been offered a plum opportunity to shape his image into something more complicated and often poignant. Powell stars as Gary Johnson, a philosophy professor at the University of New Orleans who moonlights as a pretend hitman in sting operations. That premise may seem far-fetched, but the script gives a logical pathway for Johnson’s nerdy tech hobby to seem appealing to the Nola police department’s surveillance teams. And, also, this story mostly really happened.
What remains unbelievable, especially to Gary’s surveillance teammates, is just how good he is at playing a seasoned contract killer. Gary develops disguises tailored to his mark’s idea of a hitman, inhabits that role until the incriminating cash is exchanged, then settles down at home with his cats Id and Ego—turns out, he teaches psychology classes as well—and a microwaveable meal.

Netflix has acquired Richard Linklater and Glen Powell’s buzzy “Hit Man,” TheWrap has learned. With a reported payout of $20 million, this marks the second major buy for the streaming giant amid this year’s Venice and Toronto film festivals following their reported $11 million acquisition of Anna Kendrick’s “Woman of the Hour.”
“Hit Man” stars Powell, who co-wrote the screenplay with Linklater based on a Skip Hollandsworth-penned “Texas Monthly” article. The film concerns an alleged master assassin who is secretly working for the cops. Adria Arjona plays an apparently battered wife who inspires enough sympathy from the faux killer to make him consider doing the job for real.
Ben Croll wrote in his review for TheWrap that the picture “is a deliriously entertaining star vehicle, a throwback to the low-concept, high-reward studio crowd-pleasers built around a comic persona and designed to showcase a gifted performer’s range.”

Exclusive: Netflix closed a $20 million deal on Hit Man, making the biggest deal at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and of the year for that matter. After the Richard Linklater-directed noir comic thriller debuted to raves at Venice, the film was expected to fetch the biggest deal of the fall festivals so far. Hit Man did not disappoint. Hit Man stars Top Gun Maverick’s Glen Powell and Adria Arjona (Andor) playing the most unlikely romantic partners, in performances that will boost each of their careers. Especially Powell, who co-wrote with Linklater what will be a major star turn for him. Netflix got US, UK, Australia/New Zealand, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, and Iceland. There is also a theatrical component to the deal, I’ve heard.

It was 22 years ago that Skip Hollandsworth wrote a Texas Monthly article about Gary Johnson, a school teacher who moonlights as a hit man who doesn’t kill people. Now if that doesn’t sound like the formula for a hit movie, you may understand why it has taken so long for Gary’s story to make it to the silver screen — so long in fact that its subject passed away before he could hit the red carpet of the Venice Film Festival, where the film is having its world premiere tonight.
Nevertheless, Glen Powell never forgot the story and has teamed with Richard Linklater to finally tell it, though it is only “loosely” based on the original article. Certain details in the screenplay co-written by Linklater and Powell are made up, and those are the details that actually help make this a hilarious winner, as well as perhaps Linklater...

The millennial women-led series is dead. Long live the millennials.
It wasn’t exactly surprising when Freeform’s beloved critically acclaimed “Single Drunk Female” was canceled this month after just two seasons and immediately pulled from Hulu. Sure, Freeform touted the sitcom as the highest-rated original comedy during the New York City Season 2 premiere before the series returned with all new episodes on Hulu in April. But its cancellation is just one of the many reminders that networks don’t invest long-term in women-fronted shows that focus on “messy” millennial women.
While we pour one out for “Single Drunk Female,” it’s best to trace the series back to its roots with Lena Dunham and executive producer Jenni Konner’s explosively disruptive HBO series “Girls,” which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2022. After that massive hit, why has TV abandoned the generation of people who grew up watching “Girls”?

Fans of The Blacklist have no doubt noticed that over the past few years, NBC hasn’t been doing much to promote the James Spader series. Season 9, in particular, fell by the wayside, with the network devoting only a small amount of time to promoting new episodes. Now as The Blacklist enters the final season, NBC is back on the ball and giving fans teasers and promotional material every week.
James Spader as Raymond Reddington and Stacy Keach as Robert Vesco | Scott Gries/NBC Viewers noticed a lack of promos for ‘The Blacklist’ Season 9

Still, the sudden drop off of promotional materials for the new season was surprising. The trailer for season 9 was a mere 15 seconds long. The Blacklist Season 10 Episode 4
The 200th episode of The Blacklist advances the series’ exploration of the shades of gray between morality and wickedness while bringing back the emboldened, devil-may-care criminal that fans have been missing ever since the death of Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone). Raymond Reddington (James Spader) may have lived longer than he hoped and have little left to lose, but he makes it clear in “The Hyena” that he is done with fear, pain, and regret. At the moment of his death, Red just wants to feel alive–a melding of opposites that only a man like Red can forge.
Wujing (Chin Han) is not the only criminal with tricks up his sleeve in the quest to amass the wealth and the circle of friends that will be required to put an end to his foe. At the end of the last episode,...

When it came to her elaborate costume for her epic Halloween party, Heidi Klum had just one request from her husband — leave no woman giant earthworm behind!
The 49-year-old supermodel opened up about what it was like to be stuffed as a giant earthworm when she spoke to Et’s Will Marfuggi on the “America’s Got Talent: All-Stars” red carpet in Los Angeles. Klum didn’t hold back about the fact that the costume brought on some anxiety for a myriad of reasons.
“It was strange to be in there, I have to say, because no one can really hear you,” said the “AGT” judge while covering her ears. “You can’t really hear anyone because it’s like this. Everything is muffled at all times. So it’s all tight in there and it’s boiling hot in there. Like, literally it’s like a shower. It’s dripping,...

Exclusive: Molly Bernard (Younger) has signed on to star in the indie Best Man Dead Man, marking the feature directorial debut of Verner Maldonado.
The film is set in the middle of nowhere, watching as a bachelor party turns into a night of murder and mystery when the best man ends up with a knife in his head. Friends quickly become suspects and only an eccentric, local private eye can solve the mystery. Everyone is asking the same thing: Who is the killer? And, more importantly, is it okay if we keep drinking?
Bernard will play Debra Carnegie, the lead detective with flowing red hair, purple trench coat, green umbrella, and personality to match it all. It’s as if David Bowie and a 1940s detective had a baby; a baby born to solve murders. David Gridley (The Last Ship), Ben Fernandez (Deputy), Jonny Cruz (Seis Manos), Dayana Rincon (The Last Ship...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers about the series finale of Younger, “Older,” which drops on Paramount+ today.
After winning the man of her dreams back from the crazed Quinn Tyler (Laura Benanti), who was about to whisk Charles Brooks (Peter Hermann) off to the tropics, Liza Miller (Sutton Foster) begins the series finale of Younger by waking up with her guy. However, that’s not where it all ends for the burgeoning publishing executive, and it’s not all tears either.

Best note from my showrunner/director Aziz [Ansari] once told me “making a show is like jazz.” I’ll never forget that. There was a flexibility and willingness to change things around that made it a super creative environment to work in.

Pandemic splurge Definitely food. In particular, burgers.
