Jimmy Kimmel did a fantastic job with the 2024 Oscars opening monologue, touching briefly on politics but mostly focusing the jokes around this year’s nominees. Kimmel called out Greta Gerwig’s Oscar snub, this year’s Oppenheimer nomination being a new “high” in Robert Downey Jr’s career, and compared Emma Stone playing an adult woman with the brain of a child to the woman who gave the rebuttal to the State of the Union address. Kimmel’s monologue ended with a standing ovation as he brought Teamsters & IATSE members onto the stage, thanking them for standing with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA during last year’s strikes.

The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. Overall, it was the icing on the cake of a refreshingly entertaining edition of the Oscars – one of the best in years.
Right off the bat it was pretty amusing, Jimmy Kimmel made some pretty fun digs in his opening monologue, including some references to Robert Downey Jr’s checkered history (which he was happy to play along to) and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s genetic perfection (he ain’t wrong). Plus, there was a close-up of Anatomy of a Fall’s breakout dog star, Messi (who showed up despite earlier giving the award show the high hat...

Forget what that Christmas song says! Here at TV Fanatic, we think award season is the most wonderful time of the year.
And in terms of both television ratings and general global interest, award shows don't get any bigger than the Academy Awards.
The stakes are higher than usual this year, as some major blockbuster films with some very devoted fan bases appear to be neck-and-neck in some of the major categories.
The race between Barbie and Oppenheimer (two quite different films that hit theaters on the same day) might be getting the most attention, but there's always a chance that a dark horse could sneak up from behind and snatch Best Picture away from both front runners.
Meanwhile, several of the acting categories are anyone's game and certain to create controversy no matter the outcome.
So without further ado, here are this year's predictions and hot takes from two...

The producers behind “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Maestro” and more Oscar-nominated films sat down to break down their respective projects at Variety FYC Fest: The Producers. The conversations were moderated by Variety’s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay and senior awards editor Clayton Davis.
‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Producer Daniel Lupi on Filming in Oklahoma, Striving for Authenticity
Producer Daniel Lupi became involved in “Killers of the Flower Moon” after the script was rewritten to center the relationship between Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone), contrasting from the original version of the script where DiCaprio was playing FBI agent Tom White. Lupi said Martin Scorsese described the new version as a “who didn’t do it.”

Under executive director Roger Durling, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff, February 7-17, 2024) has thrived by not only mounting a film festival but surfing the awards season wave, programming a ton of onstage interviews with Oscar contenders.
Every year, screenwriters, directors, and producers promote their films on panels, and the likes of Kristen Stewart, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Nolan, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Bong Joon Ho, Adam Driver, Renée Zellweger, Laura Dern, Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong’o, Saoirse Ronan, Bruce Dern, Jeff Bridges, Melissa McCarthy, Isabelle Huppert, Viggo Mortensen, Rami Malek, Glenn Close, and Sam Elliott submit to in-depth tributes.
The panels, tributes, and special screenings lure local cinephiles and the area’s few hundred Academy members eager to hear Oscar contenders talk about their creative process. All tributes and panels are held in person at the historic Arlington Theatre, and they’re posted online.

Just a decade ago, who could have predicted the guy known primarily for “The Hangover” movies and TV shows like “Alias” would become a 12-time Oscar nominee? Bradley Cooper has had one of the strongest Academy Awards narratives since 2012, first being recognized for his starring role in “Silver Linings Playbook” and nominated again for his most recent trio of Oscars for producing, writing and acting in “Maestro” (2023). While all of those bids are wonderful, the fact remains that Cooper still has yet to win the little gold man. Could the 2024 Oscars be his year? Josh Singer takes a lot of notes. For an in-demand screenwriter like him that makes sense, but Singer’s latest project, Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro,” required even more copious files and neat notes. After all, Singer has been working on it for over a decade.
Over a recent Zoom interview with IndieWire, Singer narrated a little bit of his typical notes-finding experience: “Hold on, let me go into files. I’m going into my Bernstein file, which is very long, and then I’m going into, Ok, here: Essentially, in 2008 [producers] Fred Berner and Amy Durning approached the Bernstein family, and they wound up, over the next two years, negotiating life rights.”
This is just the start of the odyssey. By 2010, the producers started looking for a director. Sometime around 2013, they locked in Martin Scorsese to direct. Soon after, they came knocking at Singer’s door.

Bradley Cooper embodies Leonard Bernstein in the new trailer for Maestro, the actor-director’s acclaimed biopic about the legendary composer and his lifelong relationship with Felicia Montealegre, played by Carey Mulligan.
Following its teaser trailer this summer, the latest preview further highlights the painstaking (and somewhat controversial) level of detail that Cooper brought to the film, which is divided into both black-and-white (to show flashbacks of Bernstein and Montealegre’s life) and almost cinema verite-style color footage to document the composer’s later years.

Let the music pull on your heartstrings and allow you to get overcome with emotion as Netflix releases the new trailer for Bradley Cooper’s new directorial effort, Maestro. Not only is this Cooper’s sophomore outing as a director, it’s also his second venture into the world of music and the artists behind it. In addition to directing, Cooper co-wrote the script with Josh Singer. Singer spoke of the film via Netflix’s Tudum, “I think people will see the complexity of marriage and the many forms love can take. I think those are both powerful themes.” The teaser debuted in August, and Cooper faced a bit of a backlash due to his prosthetic nose for the character drawing controversy.
The synopsis of the plot reads,

Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan bring Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre to life in the first official trailer for “Maestro,” premiering in limited theaters on Nov. 22 and arriving on Netflix Dec. 20.
In the trailer, Cooper and Mulligan travel through time as the couple experiences love, betrayal and music. The movie encompasses Bernstein’s professional life but glosses over his commercial achievements in favor of focusing on his complicated relationship with Montealegre.
“If summer doesn’t sing in you then nothing sings in you,” Cooper says at the beginning of the trailer as an old man, gently playing the piano. Later on in the trailer, but depicting the young couple decades before, Mulligan finishes the sentence: “And if nothing sings in you, then you can’t make music.”

Leonard Bernstein’s children Jamie, Alexander and Nina were in complete awe the first time they saw Bradley Cooper as the renowned conductor and composer.
“It took our breath away, it made us gasp,” Jamie Bernstein told Variety at the North American premiere of “Maestro” at the New York Film Festival. “In some pictures, we could tell a little bit that it was Bradley, but there were certain photographs where we would go, ‘Oh my God!’ It was so amazingly perfect.”
“I had a FaceTime call come in, and I didn’t recognize the number. But I chanced it, and it was my father as an old man!” added Nina Maria Felicia Bernstein. “Obviously, that was not my father as an old man, it was Bradley. I could not stop laughing. He had the cigarette and the glasses, it was so spot on.”

Bradley Cooper made a surprise appearance at the New York Film Festival’s North American premiere screening of his latest project Maestro.
The actor stars as legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein in the Netflix film he also directed and co-wrote. He had been skipping press opportunities, including the movie’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, due to the ongoing actors strike, but he was in the audience at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall on Monday night.
Speaking from the stage as she introduced Maestro, Leonard Bernstein’s daughter Jamie triumphantly told the packed auditorium that Cooper was able to watch the film in keeping with SAG-AFTRA strike rules.
“The Screen Actors Guild guidelines permit our director, Mr. Cooper, to watch his film with us here tonight,” Bernstein said. “So let’s all welcome Bradley Cooper to the debut of his beautiful film.”

“Maestro” director and star Bradley Cooper made an inconspicuous appearance at the New York Film Festival premiere, skipping press in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA.
Fitting for a film that focuses on legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein, the starry premiere marked a homecoming given its location: David Geffen Hall, home of the New York Philharmonic. On Sept. 23, 1962, Bernstein and the Philharmonic performed the inaugural concert at the venue. Bernstein served as the orchestra’s conductor from 1958 to 1969 and laureate conductor from 1969 to 1990.
Before the lights in the auditorium dimmed, Cooper was spotted sporting a buzz cut and chatting with notable guests, including Netflix’s Scott Stuber, Laura Dern, Shawn Levy and Jeremy Strong.
Carey Mulligan, who leads the film opposite Cooper as the conductor’s wife Felicia Montealegre, did not attend.

The makeup artist behind Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein movie Maestro has said he didn’t expect the backlash to the film’s prosthetic nose, which has been criticised by some as an example of ‘jewface’.

Exclusive: With the Venice Film Festival opening tonight, all eyes are on Italy to give us some early clues as to what some of the most anticipated movies of the season will be delivering in terms of their awards potential. Certainly one of the more eagerly awaited expected contenders is Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein movie, Maestro.
It comes with one of the most impressive pedigrees of the year — not only because it is Cooper’s second directorial effort, one in which he not only stars as Bernstein but also co-wrote (with Josh Singer) and was one of six producers along with such legends as Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Cooper’s hit first film as director, A Star Is Born with Lady Gaga, also was chosen for Venice in 2018, a boost that gives a star-driven film worldwide attention in an instant. That was the hope when Netflix decided to bring Maestro to the Lido,...

After Netflix released the first trailer for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” a biographical romance about Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre, many viewers took issue with Cooper’s large prosthetic nose, deeming it the latest example of Hollywood’s stereotypical or inauthentic portrayal of Jewish people, known as “Jewface.”
But in a statement posted to Bernstein’s Twitter account, the late conductor’s children defended Cooper’s decision to “use makeup to amplify his resemblance” to their father. Cooper directed “Maestro” and stars as Bernstein opposite Carey Mulligan as Montealegre.
“Bradley Cooper included the three of us along every step of his amazing journey as he made his film about our father,” wrote Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein. “We were touched to the core to witness the depth of his commitment, his loving embrace of our father’s music, and the sheer open-hearted joy he brought to his exploration.

Practice makes perfect for Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan in the first official teaser trailer for Maestro. Starring as the acclaimed composer Leonard Bernstein and his great love Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, the pair sit in a field with their backs pressed against each other. They’re certain that they can intertwine their minds closely enough to know what the other is thinking if they concentrate enough. As a young couple, they start simple: with numbers. “You should stop and think because I am sending it to you,” Felicia tells Leonard.

Awards season is over the horizon, and while films like Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon are going to be big releases for Apple Originals, Netflix will be throwing its hat into the fray with Bradley Cooper’s new drama, Maestro. Cooper, who has already gained acclaim as a writer and director with his Academy Award-nominated remake of A Star is Born from 2018, returns in the trifecta duty of writing, directing, and starring in Maestro alongside Carey Mulligan, whose credits include The Great Gatsby and had garnered positive reviews for her performance in Promising Young Woman. Netflix has now released the trailer for Cooper’s romance drama.
The official plot synopsis, according to Deadline, reads,

Bradley Cooper is striking a new chord as Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro.”
The Netflix film marks Cooper’s return to directing after Oscar-winning 2018 film “A Star Is Born.” Cooper stars as legendary composer Bernstein. Cooper also produces, and he co-wrote the film with “Spotlight” Oscar-winning screenwriter Josh Singer.
The film, which is being billed as decidedly not a biopic, centers on the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre, portrayed by Carey Mulligan. Bernstein married the Costa Rica-born actress and activist in 1951, and they stayed together until she died in 1978 even as he had affairs with men and lived a gay life otherwise.
And “Maestro” may turn out to be Felicia’s story, as Mulligan gets first billing in the trailer. The film’s first poster (below) only features Mulligan, facing away from the frame.
