The first reactions to Blue Beetle are in.
Fans and influencers are tweeting their impressions of the newest superhero title and the general takeway is this: Blue Beetle is a surprisingly solid superhero origin story with a winning performance by star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) and plenty of heart, humor, and a warm embrace of Latin culture.
The new film, directed by Angel Manuel Soto, stars Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, who gains superpowered armor following an interaction with an alien scarab. It’s DC’s first film to center on a Latino superhero and the second-to-last project from DC’s old guard before James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins (there’s still Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom coming in December). DC certainly hopes will break the superhero fatigue glut and perform better than the recent disappointment of The Flash.

As expected, James Mangold’s ’60s racing epic “Ford v Ferrari,” animated feature “Toy Story 4,” and documentary “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound” took top honors at the 56th Cinema Audio Society Awards recognizing outstanding sound mixing.
As an Oscar bellwether, though, six of the past 10 Cas winners have gone on to win the sound mixing Oscar, which bodes well for “Ford v Ferrari.” However, Oscar-nominated “1917,” Sam Mendes’ continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, was not in contention at the Cas Awards, which makes the race very competitive.
“We threw out the production sound,” said Dave Giammarco, the “Ford v Ferrari” re-recording mixer. “But when we got the real GT40, it helped inform the cut because it has its own signature [sound], and you want to wind it out and feel the whole length of it. Sometimes they would cut the shot to match the engine whine. And sometimes you...

Disney’s Ford v Ferrari was the big winner tonight as the Cinema Audio Society handed out its 56th annual Cas Awards for outstanding achievement in sound mixing in Los Angeles. See the full winners list below.
Last year’s top Cas Award winner, Bohemian Rhapsody, went on the score the Best Achievement in Sound Editing Oscar for John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone. Ford v Ferrari will chase that checkered flag in two weeks against Ad Astra, Joker, 1917 and Once Up[on a Time in Hollywood.
Disney/Pixar’s billion-dollar sequel Toy Story 4 sporked away with the animated prize, and Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound unsurprisingly won the documentary award.
A pair of series that wrapped this past year took the top TV trophies: HBO’s Game of Thrones and Amazon’s Fleabag.

With all of the talk surrounding the latest casting of Gotham City’s masked crusader, it’s interesting to reflect on what might have been if Ben Affleck had stuck around and played Batman for just a little while longer. While it’s impossible to know exactly what the studio had in mind, fans now have somewhat of an idea of what that future could have looked like thanks to David Betancourt.
According to the reporter, Affleck’s first standalone feature as the superhero would have pitted Bruce Wayne against Deathstroke. Batman’s dreaded foe was also supposed to have a standalone movie of his own, but that appears to have stalled.
It remains to be seen whether or not this same idea is used for the next Batman film now that Robert Pattinson has been cast as the billionaire vigilante. More likely than not, though, the studio will decide...

Reviews for James Wan’s “Aquaman” are finally in — and critics seem to argue that while the movie is a spectacle and “a massive adventure,” it has some flaws.
“Plot-wise, the result is a hot, foamy mess, my friends, but a mess that washed over me like a tidal wave, a mess so wild and candy-colored and eager to have a bitchin’ time that it’s some of the most fun I’ve had at a theater this year,” said Collider’s Vinnie Mancuso.
Comic Book’s Brandon Davis added, “each of ‘Aquaman’s’ flaws, are complimented [sic] by brilliant action-sequences, stylish swagger, and an epic, massive adventure, like the character himself.”

Josh Brolin could make Oscar history with his motion-capture performance in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’
Motion-capture performances have been criminally ignored by awards groups. Most deem them to be ineligible for consideration despite the fact that the voice, facial expressions and movements are all the work of the performer. The motion picture academy has no such rule. To that end, Oscar voters would do well to nominate Josh Brolin for his rendition of the evil Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War.”
Screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus did an outstanding job in their plotting of this picture, which is number 19 in the Marvel Cinema Universe franchise. But it was Brolin who brought this comic book character to life. “Infinity War” directors Joe and Anthony Russo described this mad titan as the main character their movie.
Predict the Oscar nominations now; change them until January 22

As expected, “La La Land” came away with the live-action sound mixing award at Saturday’s 53rd Cinema Audio Society (Cas) Awards. Damien Chazelle’s valentine to Hollywood musicals is now a sure bet to win the Best Sound Mixing Oscar. (Sound Editing is still a race.)
Meanwhile, Pixar’s “Finding Dory” upset Disney’s “Zootopia” for animated feature honors. And HBO’S “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble” earned the first-ever Cas documentary award.
TV winners included “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” (movie or miniseries), “Game of Thrones,” which grabbed its fourth consecutive award for “Battle of the Bastards” (one-hour), “Modern Family: The Storm” (1/2-hour), and “Grease Live!” (specials),
Oscar-nominated sound engineer John Pritchett (“Road to Perdition,” “Memories of a Geisha”) received the Career Achievement Award and Jon Favreau won the Filmmaker Award for “The Jungle Book’s” innovative sound.

The Cinema Audio Society has announced its nominees for the 53rd Annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2016 in seven categories.
On the film side, strong contenders like “La La Land,” “Rogue One” and “Zootopia” picked up nods, while television series like “Game of Thrones,” “blackish” and “Stranger Things” also received nominations. For the first year, the Cas is honoring Documentary films, with nods like “O.J.: Made in America” and “13th” rounding out this inaugural category.
Missing from the film nods are more than a few surprises, including “Deepwater Horizon,” “The Jungle Book” and “Silence.”
“We are blessed this year with a rich portfolio of Cinema Audio art applied. As the creative contributions of sound mixing to modern filmmaking becomes more obvious to the world at large, these productions truly represent the talents of our community,” said Mark Ulano, Cas President, of the announcement.
