This post contains spoilers for the season finale of Fargo, now available on FX and streaming tomorrow on Hulu.
At the end of Fargo the movie, justice is mostly done. The kidnapping orchestrated by Jerry Lundegaard, and carried out by Carl Showalter and Gaear Grimsrud, results in a lot of deaths and heartbreak. But Gaear kills Carl (and feeds his body into a wood chipper), Jerry gets arrested, and Marge Gunderson — as morally upright a person as you’ll find in a Coen brothers movie — catches Gaear. As she drives him to jail,...

The Warm Embrace of The Family Stone The charm of The Family Stone lies in the authentic depiction of family dynamics, where drama and comedy intertwine like tinsel on a Christmas tree. This 2005 holiday film captivated audiences with its ensemble cast’s chemistry, making us laugh and cry as we followed the Stones’ festive mishaps. However, the film’s conclusion felt like the last page torn from a beloved book, leaving us yearning for more moments with this quirky clan. Writer-director Thomas Bezucha crafted a story that resonated deeply with viewers, capturing the heartfelt moments and rhythms of domestic life. Yet,...

Look, despite the title, it's not exactly a mystery that Marvel's "Secret Invasion" all but crashed and burned upon release on Disney+ earlier this year. I would know, since I had to recap those episodes on a weekly basis! By far the most critically-savaged streaming series that the studio has ever released (not to mention a finale that somehow reached even lower lows), even the most diehard fans felt thrown off by a haphazard and aimless plot that meandered its way towards an anticlimactic ending, a head-scratching adaptation of a seminal comic book storyline, and the pervasive feeling that Emilia Clarke and Kingsley Ben-Adir were wasting their talents week in and week out. Oh, and of course, there was also the visual of Clarke's stubby Drax arm that instantly became a meme. It was a lot, folks.

It didn’t take long to see the problem after Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again paused production in mid-June during the writers strike. Fewer than half of the series’ 18 episodes had been shot, but it was enough for Marvel executives, including chief Kevin Feige, to review the footage and come away with a clear-eyed assessment: The show wasn’t working.
So, in late September, Marvel quietly let go of head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman and also released the directors for the remainder of the season as part of a significant creative reboot of the series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The studio is now on the hunt for new writers and directors for the project, which stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer turned superhero.

Plot: The Good House follows Hildy Good, a wry New England realtor and descendant of the Salem witches, who loves her wine and her secrets. Her compartmentalized life begins to unravel as she rekindles a romance with her old high-school flame and becomes dangerously entwined in one person’s reckless behavior. Igniting long-buried emotions and family secrets, Hildy is propelled toward a reckoning with the one person she’s been avoiding for decades: herself.
Review: Believe it or not, it has been over a decade since Sigourney Weaver was the lead in a feature film. While she has acted steadily in major supporting roles or as part of an ensemble, Weaver’s last top-billed performance was in 2007’s The Girl in the Park. Imax is out this Sunday with Brandi Carlile: In The Canyon Haze – Live from Laurel Canyon on 31 screens nationwide, an encore of a live event that reps a milestone for the large format exhibitor.
The concert was broadcast Thursday from LA’s storied Laurel Canyon neighborhood to 87 Imax theaters (there would have been a few more if Hurricane Ian hadn’t taken out Florida locations). More than three dozen sold out for what is the company’s top-grossing live event. It featured Carlile and her band — no live audience — performing reimagined versions of songs from her new deluxe album “In The Canyon Haze”. Filmed for Imax using Imax digital cameras, it’s the first event of its kind Imax has staged.
Early this year, the company grossed 300k from its live stream of Kanye West’s Donda 2 concert event in Miami — the closest thing to date. (It released the...

With the temps falling and the leaves slowly changing, lots of folks may be thinking of taking a trip to New England. Perhaps you could “hunker down” in a quaint old house by the water. Hey, if you’ve got the moola, maybe you could just buy the place, and make it your getaway, or permanent “digs”. Oh but most of us would have to do this vicariously, maybe at the movies. But who would you contact about such a fantasy home, say in a rustic lil’ village? And that is answered in this week’s star-powered release. Surely such a spot would be free of worries, “no hassles, no hustles”, right? Not really, as this film’s focus finds out. It seems you’re never safe from those “inner demons”, not even at The Good House.

This review originally ran Sept. 15, 2021, for the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Like many an entertaining addict, Hildy Good is a great storyteller, providing withering judgments about the people in her orbit amidst all the latest gossip. But like all addicts, the stories she tells always exonerate herself and her behavior — she’s just fine, it’s everyone else who’s messed up. And so what if she sneaks wine after having already been sent to rehab? She never drinks before 5pm, so it’s not like she’s an alcoholic or anything.
Sigourney Weaver plunges herself into the role of Hildy in “The Good House,” and it’s been a while since this titan of cinema has been given a character with the complexity (and the screen time) that the actor deserves. Weaver’s droll comic style has surfaced periodically over the course of...

The wait is (almost) over for Marvel’s “Secret Invasion.”
Disney unveiled a trailer for the upcoming series at D23, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn.
Creator Kyle Bradstreet serves as head writer, with Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim directing the six-episode series. The cast also includes Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle, and Martin Freeman reprising their existing MCU roles, as well as Kingsley Ben-Adir, Carmen Ejogo, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and more.
“Secret Invasion” has been teased since as early as “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” when Jackson’s Nick Fury turned out to be a shape-shifting alien skrull the whole time. At the end of “WandaVision,” a skrull approaches Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and invites her to meet with Fury in space.
The skrulls themselves, starting with Mendelsohn’s Talos, were introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019’s “Captain Marvel” as villains, but later turned out to be layered,...

The Good House is roughly one-half of an utterly wonderful, character-driven comedy-drama. But one-half is insufficient to classify anything a success. That is true even when the entirety features an exceptional lead performance from Sigourney Weaver, the actor giving her most full-throttle, deep-throated, go-for-broke role in years as Hildy, a real-estate agent who erects a steely facade. Hildy’s world in the New England town of Woodhaven is in fact gripped with conflict, her current life revolving around a struggle for sobriety.
Many of these elements, and their refreshing allowance for deep character flaws, are positives. And, for these, directors Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky deserve praise. But Forbes, Wolodarsky, and co-writer Thomas Bezucha made several miscalculations in their adaptation of Ann Leary’s 2013 novel—chief among these the way-too-significant amount of time spent on, well, nearly every non-Hildy onscreen. Only a local contractor and old flame of Hildy’s,...

I am not of fan of movies that resort to breaking the fourth wall, as it were, and letting their key characters talk incessantly to the audience. It is a device that generally feels lazy, a writer’s crutch to explain away story points instead of letting us discover for ourselves. The recent annoying pandemic comedy Together, with James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan as a bickering couple who sell their sides of ongoing marital arguments directly to the camera, is an example of why overuse of this technique can be so tired. Now along comes The Good House, which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and where Sigourney Weaver as a functioning alcoholic real estate agent in North Boston offers her view on the town and its people with full sarcasm intact. It is based on the 2013 book by Ann Leary, and it seems this very literary conceit was...

Sigourney Weaver was drawn to her new movie “The Good House” for multiple reasons — mainly because she feels that “women in their 60s don’t really have a voice in film.”
“How often in my life have I been sent a script that’s just about a great dame?” Weaver told TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman during a video interview at the Toronto International Film Festival. “In this case, Hildy is in her 60s, and women in their 60s don’t really have a voice in film, especially, in Hildy’s case, such a funny voice. I just found it very entertaining, very touching — she’s got some issues like all of us!”
The actress, who is 71, said she also connected to the character of Hildy, a realtor in New England whose life unravels when she hooks up with an old flame (played by Kevin Kline).

In “The Good House,” Sigourney Weaver plays Hildy, a prickly, well-born Realtor in a wealthy New England town. Hildy is a mother and grandmother, and her family has become concerned with her drinking. When they stage an intervention, the beginning of which you can see in this exclusive clip, Weaver’s Hildy breaks the fourth wall, and tells the audience about the players.
“Let me introduce everyone first,” Hildy says to the camera. And then she does, peppering her comments with asides: “This is my ex-husband, Scott, to whom I pay alimony. Even though he left me for a man after 22 years of marriage.”
“The Good House,” an acquisition title produced by Amblin Partners, will premiere as a Gala Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 15. Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky co-directed the film, and also adapted Ann Leary’s 2013 novel of the same name with Thomas Bezucha.

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (Josh Greenbaum)
Injecting a sense of delightfully unbridled frivolity to quite a dire era of studio comedy, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar marks Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig’s first project since a decade ago with Bridesmaids. Following best friends as they take their dream vacation in a town that’s being targeted for mass destruction, this is a comedy that understands being dumb doesn’t mean dumbing things down. With a radiant color palette and joke-a-minute delivery, couple with Jamie Dornan’s best performance, this will certainly be the most rewatchable film on this list in the years to come. – Jordan R.

It may have taken 23 films, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally celebrating a long-in-the-making milestone: the release of the first MCU film to be directed by a solo female filmmaker. After a series of delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Cate Shortland’s “Black Widow” is finally hitting both theaters and Disney+ more than a year after its intended release date. As the first film in the franchise’s “Phase Four,” it’s both a crucial bridge between the 22 movies that came before, and a strong suggestion of what’s to come as the series branches further out.
Despite the film’s many release date delays, its prime new summer slotting comes with a small silver lining. Shortland’s film, though an outlier in the cinematic world — at least for now — arrives as Marvel is in the midst of a push into television series that includes a strong showing from female creators.

Diane Lane is, objectively, a national treasure. Since her first role in A Little Romance in 1979, the accomplished actress has played the ingenue, the romantic foil, the action star, the woman scorned and so much, much more.
Just last year, Lane starred alongside Kevin Costner and Lesley Manville in Let Him Go, written and directed by Thomas Bezucha. The film tells the story of George and Margaret Blackledge, who fight to save their grandson from his indoctrination into the evil Weboy family. In our positive review, we wrote that, “Not surprisingly, [Diane] Lane is the heart at the center of Let Him Go. She has been a movie star for nearly her entire life and somehow still does not get the credit she deserves. The emotional trajectory of her character is built on only a handful of scant scenes at the top of the picture.”

Happiest Season, Hollywood’s first major lesbian Christmas rom-com, has everything you’d expect from a Christmas movie: snow; sweaters; mismatched family members coming together under one roof; characters saying they hate Christmas and then succumbing to holiday cheer; conflict; satisfying resolution. Director and co-writer Clea DuVall embraces cliches, but filtering them through a lesbian perspective allows old tropes to gain new context. Family dysfunction carries extra weight when viewed through the lens of heteronormativity. The happy couple’s falling-out hits deeper because it’s wrought with the anxiety of coming out. Their fairytale ending feels all the more precious because it’s hard won,...
