Unlike their golden run on the big screen till phase 3, Marvel didn’t quite replicate its huge success on the small screen, with most of the Disney Plus MCU shows earning less-than-stellar reception. While fans have complained about MCU’s recent catalog being bloated following the abundance of TV shows, Marvel has also abandoned an overwhelming number of TV shows over the years.
This involves several renowned superheroes, including a Captain Britain show, which was greenlit long before the rise of Disney Plus and MCU TV shows.

Back in 2016, rumors regarding a Captain Britain show being in the early stages of development emerged. Poster artist Clara McAvoy claimed she was being paid to do a promo poster for it, assuring fans an official announcement might be heading our way in early 2017 or late 2016. Unfortunately, it never happened, leading many to speculate Marvel might have put the kibosh on it.

In a year defined by the dual strikes, talent was muzzled, unable to promote projects many had worked on for years. For major stars like Seth Rogen or Bradley Cooper this was merely a missed opportunity to talk about a passion project. But for breakout stars like The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, One Piece‘s Iñaki Godoy, Reservation Dogs’ Devery Jacobs, Blue Beetle’s Xolo Maridueña and The Machine screenwriter Kevin Biegel it meant experiencing a major career milestone from the sidelines. They share what they did to mark the occasion away from the spotlight.

Bert Kreischer is living proof that truth is stranger than fiction.
In the mid-’90s, Kreischer went on a Florida State class trip to Russia, and to make a long story short, the Russian mafia forced the 22-year-old college kid to rob a passenger train that included his classmates. The Florida native somehow made it out of Russia unscathed, and after enough time had passed, he began telling the story on radio shows and podcasts until it became the focus of his viral stand-up comedy special, The Machine, in 2016. A few years later, Kreischer sold a movie version of The Machine to Legendary Entertainment’s Cale Boyter, who boiled the indirect pitch down to “The Godfather Part II meets The Hangover.”
The film’s premise revolves around Bert and his father, Albert (Mark Hamill), getting kidnapped by a Russian gangster (Iva Babić) as a form of payback for Bert stealing...

Mark Hamill knows full well that he’s perceived as one of pop culture’s most heroic figures, so he welcomes any opportunity he can get to go against type. In the case of his latest film, The Machine, Hamill and stand-up comedian Bert Kreischer play father and son, and to put it mildly, they get caught up in quite a bit of mayhem and debauchery, allowing Hamill to show a rather new side to himself. Written by Kevin Biegel and Scotty Landes, the Peter Atencio-directed action comedy sequelizes a true story that Kreischer has been telling for over two decades, most notably in his 2016 stand-up special, The Machine.
To make a long story short, in the mid-‘90s, Kreischer went on a Florida St. class trip to Russia, and the hard partier was forced to rob a train full of passengers by the Russian mob. So, the film,...

The Machine is loud, gross, obnoxious and overbearing. It’s also disarming, quick-witted, fast moving and becomes increasingly funny as it ends up in, of all places, Russia for its payoff scenes.
Presided over, if that is the right term, by the irrepressible Bert Kreischer, the big-gutted comedian who goes by the name The Machine and prefers to appear without a shirt on whenever possible, has landed his first big feature film at age 50 and continues the same comic shtick he’s been doing for years. Lo and behold, it’s still pretty funny stuff. This is a big picture for a big guy, and Kreischer is so persistent, and persistently off the wall, that it’s finally far easier to enjoy the party than to carp and resist.
Kreischer makes a point of performing with his shirt off when at all possible, something that becomes a tad strange in...

Plot: Set 23 years after the original story which inspired it, The Machine finds Bert Kreischer facing familial crisis and the arrival of his estranged father when the ghost of his booze-soaked past arrives: a murderous mobster hellbent on kidnapping Bert back to the motherland to atone for his crimes. Together, he and his father must retrace the steps of his younger self in the midst of a war between a sociopathic crime family while they attempt to find common ground.
Review: This weekend boasts two theatrical films featuring stand-up comedians with dedicated fanbases in stories about their relationship with their father. Both Sebastian Maniscalco and Bert Kreischer have performed elements of the stories at the core of their big-screen adventures, but the results could not be further apart. While About My Father is a wholesome bromance centered on the culture clash of two families, The Machine is a balls-to-the-wall action...

It is a miracle that Dan Harmon's groundbreaking sitcom "Community" lasted more than a half-season on NBC. The series about seven misfits who form a study group at the fictional Greendale Community College was aggressively dense in its world-building and proudly esoteric in its references. How esoteric? In only its second season, the show turned what was set up as a "Pulp Fiction" homage into an invigoratingly cerebral riff on "My Dinner with Andre" provoked by a character's extra work on Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel's "Cougar Town." Not so shockingly, "Community" ranked a dire 138 in the Nielsen ratings that year.
Harmon and a crack staff of writers that included Megan Ganz, Dino Stamatopoulos, Liz Cackowski, Chris McKenna, and Andy Bobrow shredded the outside of the envelope of what was acceptable on a network sitcom. It made "Seinfeld" look like "Full House." Critics and a cult following kept...

23 years ago, comedian Bert Kreischer was better known for his partying antics as "the top partyer at the Number One Party School in the country," according to Rolling Stone. He ended up spending a summer in Russia that went kind of haywire, earning him the nickname "The Machine" and giving him an impressive story to tell for the rest of his life about being a part of a train robbery while not even speaking Russian. His shirtless stand-up story is the stuff of internet legend and kickstarted Kreischer's career as a comedian. Now, decades later, he's starring in a movie that returns him to where it all began, with Russians, robberies, and a whole lot of ridiculous antics.
The red-band trailer has arrived for "The Machine," which follows a fictionalized version of Kreischer and his dad (played by Mark Hamill!) after they're kidnapped by Russians and forced to be a...

Comedian and star Bert Kreischer’s The Machine will laugh its way into theaters on May 26, the beginning of the long Memorial Day weekend. Legendary Star Wars actor Mark Hamill co-stars opposite Kreischer.
Sony and Legendary announced the film’s release date on Wednesday. The two companies recently announced a multi-year distribution deal.
The film is an adaptation of a story Kreischer told onstage about getting involved with the Russian mob while studying abroad in college. The tale of Kreischer’s exploits quickly went viral and has been viewed more than 85 million times, according to Legendary.
Peter Atencio (Key & Peele, Keanu) is directing The Machine from a script by Kevin Biegel and Scotty Landes.

Over the course of "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law," True Believers have been introduced to a number of interesting, obscure, and unforgettable characters. We have yet to meet Frog Man at this point in the show, but appearances from the Wrecking Crew, Titania, and Madisynn King (with Wongers) have certainly held us over until that day finally arrives. However, in the latest episode of the Disney+ series from Jessica Gao, the show makes the deepest cut to date and pulls out one of the most obtuse characters in all of the Marvel Universe and utilizes him in an absolutely hilarious way.

Hurricane Michael has temporarily elbowed Hurricane Trump out of the headlines — actually, that’s probably more wish than reality. However, as news operations shift resources toward covering the massive Category 4 storm in the Florida panhandle, countless news reporters and weathercasters will drape themselves with station-logo ponchos — the better to get drenched and steel themselves against 155 mph winds, all in the name of a kickass live shot.
In the scheme of things, it’s silly: Everyone knows it’s really, really windy outside. And it’s clearly dangerous; as TV writer Kevin Biegel shared on Twitter, “Can the reporters in Florida please stop with the weather porn of standing in the wind? Growing up in Florida we knew of a woman whose boyfriend was decapitated by a piece of plywood in a hurricane — don’t go outside, you dolts.”
Logic be damned: If there’s a chance to abandon the safety...

Marvel has planted its seeds far and wide over the past few years in the television landscape, but that volume has so far yielded mixed results.
While rival DC has found success by focusing on familiar franchises like “The Flash,” “Arrow,” “Supergirl,” and the Batman origins tale on “Gotham,” Marvel has been a bit more stingy with its marquee characters. For example, ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” lives in the world of the Avengers, yet never became a hit partly because it focused on lesser-known characters.
But that’s not always a hindrance. Many of Marvel’s Netflix series, especially “Jessica Jones,” have been critically acclaimed partly because they felt like they hadn’t been overly mined previously. It takes a visionary showrunner, in this age of so many superhero tales, to bring a fresher take to the genre and keep interest high.

Legendary character actor Keith David has joined the cast of Marvel's upcoming series New Warriors! This will reunite David with showrunner Kevin Biegel. They worked together on the 2014 series Enlisted.
According to THR, David will take on the role of Ernest Vigman, "a caustic municipal employee who butts up against the hopeful energy of the new warriors." This will be a reoccurring role in the series. I'm such a huge fan of David and his work whose film career pretty much started with John Carpenter's The Thing.
David will join Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) as Squirrel Girl; Derek Theler (Baby Daddy) as Mister Immortal; Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People) as Night Thrasher; Calum Worthy (Austin and Ally) as Speedball; Matthew Moy (Two Brok Girls) as Microbe; Kate Comer as Debrii.

2017-07-10T14:36:19-07:00Marvel Finally Casts Its Squirrel Girl
Three months after being picked up straight to series by Freeform, Marvel's New Warriors has found its cast.
Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) has landed the breakout role of Squirrel Girl, while Baby Daddy grad Derek Theler will stay in business with Freeform after landing the role of Mister Immortal in Marvel's first live-action scripted comedy.
The duo lead the ensemble cast in the 10-episode series about six young people learning to cope with their abilities in a world where bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates. Joining Vayntrub and Theler are Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy as Microbe and Kate Comer as Debrii.
"I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters.

Earlier this year Marvel and Freeform revealed that character that would be included in their upcoming New Warriors series. Today they announced the cast that would be playing those characters. I've included that list below along with their character descriptions.
Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) will play Squirrel Girl:
Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl)
Superpower: “The powers of a squirrel, the powers of a girl” (is acrobatic, strong, can fight, can talk to squirrels) Doreen is a totally empowered fangirl. She is a natural leader—confident and tough, but not innocent. Doreen is bouncy and energetic and her greatest quality is her optimism… She has faith in others and inspires people to believe in themselves. She also takes her pet squirrel, Tippy Toe, everywhere.
Derek Theler (Baby Daddy) will play Mister Immortal:
Craig Hollis (Mister Immortal)

The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Marvel and Freeform’s New Warriors series has filled out its cast, with Milana Vayntrub set to spearhead the ensemble as Doreen Green (Aka Squirrel Girl).

Set to headline Marvel and Freeform’s upcoming New Warriors, USA Today has blown the lid off the half-hour action-comedy series to identify the five costumed crusaders who will be rubbing shoulders with Doreen Green in 2018. Ordered straight to series just over a fortnight ago – it’ll join fellow Marvel show Cloak and Dagger on the network’s burgeoning slate – we know that writer-producer Kevin Biegel (Cougar Town, Scrubs) is attached to pen the script, with the option to serve as showrunner still on the table.
In tandem with today’s reveal, Jeph Loeb, executive producer and head of Marvel Television, spoke to USA Today about what makes Squirrel Girl and Co. so unique, stating that the New Warriors are “the eager, hopeful-for-a-brighter-tomorrow group that also have the wry, sardonic, life-is-hell attitude that makes them uniquely Marvel.”

Like its parent company Disney, Marvel is slowly gearing up to take over the world. Their ascent to the top began with the ambitious Marvel Studios film universe that kicked off with Iron Man back in 2008. From there, it expanded its reach into ABC with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter before hopping into Netflix with its more grounded, street-level heroes like Daredevil and Luke Cage. So if you’re keeping track, they have general audiences with film and ABC, older audiences with Netflix, so one extra demographic they can exploit more fully lies in the young adult segment.
That’s where Freeform comes into play. For those who don’t know, Freeform is the new iteration of ABC Family that launched last year. Rather than focus on the whole family, they have shifted their focus on young adult, or as they call them, “becomers.” The general idea is that...

Though Marvel’s roster of Netflix original series tends to steal all the limelight – The Defenders, for instance, just planted the flag on a late summer premiere date – the studio has been making serious headway on a variety of other small screen projects.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which showrunner would you like to invite to Thanksgiving dinner and why?
Liz Shannon Miller (@lizlet), IndieWire
Think what you will of her shows (personally, I think Season 1 of “Scandal” is a modern classic), but Shonda Rhimes is a delight. After reading her recent book “The Year of Yes,” I’ve been semi-obsessed with Shonda’s (I feel like I can call her Shonda) wit, confidence, and positive outlook. I’d like to believe that if Shonda said yes to dinner, she’d be a lively force at the table, a help in the kitchen before and after, and damn right she’d bring some incredible wine with her to share.
