Another year bites the dust, friends. Another year where I've watched too many horror movies, and now it’s time to face the impossible task of sorting the best into a ranked list. I’ve been doing it since my first year as a big-boy film critic almost a decade ago, but it never gets easier. I’ve seen over 130+ horror movies in 2023! Ten slots aren’t enough to capture the massive breadth of worthwhile horror titles you should consume. I won’t do it, dammit. I can’t.
…Ok maybe I can but still, it’s harder than it looks! There are so many noteworthy films not listed, but that's the beauty of opinions and personal preferences. My list is mine and mine alone. Other critics will have their own takes, and more power to the variety of responses highlighting as many releases as possible. So let’s get...

From the mosh pit of TV cancellations, the animated cult hit Metalocalypse rises up and delivers Army of the Doomstar. And without missing a beat, the story of the world’s most successful death metal band Dethklok picks up right where it left off. This new feature-length film serves as a direct continuation of 2013’s sublime and singular metal-opera The Doomstar Requiem. Those hanging plot threads are now finally answered in this climactic music odyssey brimful with hellfire and end of world stakes.
In the universe of Metalocalypse, the band Dethklok reigns supreme as metal lords whose global success has a direct effect on both society and the economy. The government keeps a watchful eye on the band as well as any trends and incidents influenced by their actions. Despite their godlike power, the five members of Dethklok — lead singer Nathan Explosion (Brendon Small), bassist William Murderface (Tommy Blacha), lead...

Metalocalypse: Army Of The Doomstar is a brilliant conclusion to the epic saga of Dethklok, the world’s most popular and influential death metal band. The animated series, created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, combines dark humor, musical satire, and apocalyptic drama in a unique and original way.
This epic conclusion film delivers on the promise of resolving the mysteries and conflicts that have been building up since the first episode. The animation is stunning, the voice acting is superb, and the soundtrack is phenomenal. The show manages to balance comedy and tragedy, as well as pay homage to the genre of metal and its culture.
What was also a bit surprising to us as we were watching the film, is that there was a certain level of sentimentality that was normally not present during the original series run. The film further showcased the heart line which runs between...

"Unless you are vigilant, you will drown in fear." Adult Swim has debuted a trailer for an animated release titled Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar, a feature film spin-off from the animated series called "Metalocalypse". Originally premiering on Adult Swim in 2006, it ran for four seasons with another special Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem (in 2013). The series was created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blancha, and this new movie is written & directed by Small. Can Nathan Explosion look beyond his brutally damaged ego to save his band, stop the Metalocalypse, and finally face the ultimate evil: Salacia? The movie stars the voices of Brendon Small, Tommy Blacha, Victor Brandt, Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner (Grammy Award-winning musician), King Diamond (King Diamond; Mercyful Fate), plus Mark Hamill, Kirk Hammett, Jon Hamm, Scott Ian (Anthrax), Amy Lee (Evanescence), Malcolm McDowell, Juliet Mills, Laraine Newman (SNL), and Livia Zita (2022 winner - Society of Voice Arts and Sciences Award). This looks gnarly!

Toronto -- Todd Phillips ("The Hangover") is to receive the best comedy director award and Etan Cohen ("Tropic Thunder") the best comedy writer honor at next month's Just For Laughs comedy conference in Montreal, organizers said Monday.
The Montreal forum on all things funny will also bring Cohen together with fellow writers Tami Sagher, Jeremy Garelick and Dan Sterling for the "Comedy's Next Generation of Writers: A Look Ahead" panel to crystal ball about their craft.
Also booked into the July 23-25 conference is Mike Farah and Avi Rothman for an online comedy panel, while the "Breaking New Ground: Adult Animation Grows Up" panel includes Dino Stamatopoulos, Tommy Blacha and Vernon Chatman.
And Nathan Kahane ("Juno"), Todd Phillips and Tom McNulty are the first panelists named for the "Producing Great Comedy: The Secret Sauce" session.
Just For Laughs will make additional announcements on comedy conference participants in the coming weeks.

I somehow missed the advent of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim but recognize its contributions to pop culture. As a result, as the DVD sets have been arriving for review, I’ve managed to play a bit of catch-up. The random humor of Aqua Teen Hunger Force was lost upon me and I was excoriated for being too old to appreciate it.
Well, I certainly enjoyed the second season of Metalocaplypse a lot more. Largely, this had to do with the level of wit and creativity that is brought to each episode of the series, which aired from September 2007 through September 2008, with a six month break in between. The cartoon is derived from the This is Spinal Tap’s rock mockumentary roots but works because there’s so much that can be parodied.
Deathlok is an unnaturally popular metal band and the performers are great when on stage and totally dysfunctional away from the crowds.
