- He carried on the family tradition of great magicians established by his father Harry Blackstone (Sr.).
- While attending the University of Southern California, he was a member of the USC Trojan Marching Band.
- Before coming to prominence, he worked as a fill-in magician in Las Vegas, a radio announcer and also acted in Japanese theatre.
- Served for three years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
