PBS Kids is taking a page out of Schoolhouse Rock with a new series that aims to boost civics education.
A new video, Let’s Vote, debuted last week and pays homage to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance.
The series is called City Island Sings! and is led by Kimia Behpoornia of Abbott Elementary and Kimiko Glenn of Orange Is The New Black. PBS Kids partnered with Augenblick Studios’ Future Brain Media for the project. The songs are written and performed by Tunde Adebimpe, lead singer of TV on the Radio, with guest performers and paying homage to Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Devo, Dua Lipa and others.
The first season will include 10 music videos, with others tied to appreciation of school workers and diversity of communities, among other topics. The visuals pay tribute to artists like Mary Blair, Keith Haring and Roy Lichtenstein, as well as the visual inspiration of Sesame Street.

According to Disney, the new tower – first announced in 2022 and projected to open in December 2024 – will overlook the Seven Seas Lagoon and will take guests on a storytelling journey that brings to life the spirit of Polynesia, the natural world, and of course, the magic of Disney.

Brittney Lee has become something of a rock star artist for Walt Disney Animation Studios. Joining the studio 10 years ago on the strength of a design portfolio she put together in her off-time while working as an animator on an online multiplayer game, she’s worked on most of the studio’s features and shorts since 2011’s “Wreck It Ralph.” “Frozen,” however, holds a special place in the Pennsylvania native’s heart. In addition to her work on the 2013 Oscar-winner, she brought a mix of mid-century art influences as well as an interest in paper-cut art, aka quilling, to the first feature, a “Frozen” children’s book she illustrated, and to “Frozen II.” The visual development artist and production designer also jumped into the unknown waters of Vr as production designer on the Ves Award-nominated “Myth: A Frozen Tale.”
What are your artistic influences?
Oh, it’s all over the place.

When the Academy opened up voting for animated features to the membership at large and implementing preferential balloting, the balance of power shifted from indies to the big studios the first time in four years. This resulted in the final five nods for Pixar frontrunner “Coco,” GKids’ politically powerful “The Breadwinner,” the hand-painted “Loving Vincent,” and two surprising mainstream studio entries: “The Boss Baby” from DreamWorks and Blue Sky’s “Ferdinand.”
Indeed, one could argue that without the new rule changes and a Disney release last year, there likely would’ve been four indies joining “Coco.” Still, there were several positive takeaways: All five movies captured the zeitgeist in one way or another, and this marked the first time that two female directors were nominated in the same year: Nora Twomey for “The Breadwinner” and Dorota Kobiela for “Loving Vincent.” They joined previous nominees Marjane Satrap (“Persepolis”), Jennifer Yuh Nelson...

For DreamWorks director Tom McGrath (the “Madagascar” franchise), “The Boss Baby” not only provided a personal story about sibling rivalry and corporate displacement, with Alec Baldwin voicing a Trump-like corporate bully, but also the opportunity to create a separate 2D graphic design for several fantasy sequences.
“I think we’ve forgotten our roots a little bit [with CG],” McGrath told IndieWire. “But since we were doing a movie about a 7-year-old’s imagination, we could be very stylized, very abstract, and very colorful. And we had our heroes of animation from the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s to drawn on: Maurice Noble, Mary Blair, Ward Kimball, and Chuck Jones.”

Chicago – In one of the most natural pieces of voice casting in cartoon history, Alec Baldwin portrays the title character in Dreamworks Animation’s “The Boss Baby.” The director is animation veteran Tom McGrath (“Madagascar”), and the producer is Ramsey Ann Naito, and they were both in Chicago to promote the film.
“The Boss Baby” is fast, loose, funny and full of heart. Based on a children’s book by Marla Frazee, the animated version combines baby brother jealousy with Mad Men-era business self help, in a crazy visual landscape. Alec Baldwin is at his “30 Rock” best as the Boss Baby, delivering lines like the parody of his famous movie quote, “cookies are for closers.” There are many layers in the film, but mostly it is a hilarious metaphor on how families adjust when new siblings are added to the mix.

During my recent trip to the Bay Area for the San Francisco Silent Film Festival I got to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum, as well, and I’m so glad I did. There are two outstanding exhibits in their temporary galleries right now, one honoring master animator Marc Davis and the other (in a separate building) paying tribute to one of Walt Disney’s favorite artists, Mary Blair. Disney wasn’t known to pay compliments too freely, but he had tremendous admiration for Blair’s work and especially her forward-thinking use of color. (He and his wife Lillian displayed several of her pieces in their home.)She was one of the artists who accompanied Walt to Central and South America in 1941,...

Cinderella (1950) Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
The Walt Disney classic finally makes it high definition debut. Though it was made over half a century ago, Cinderella remains a timeless work of animation. Part of its lasting appeal can be attributed to the amazing concept art of Mary Blair, whose gorgeous backgrounds and unique color palettes help to define its iconic visual style. Though she was only credited with color and styling, her influence in the look and feel of the finished product cannot be denied. Another aspect that is often overlooked is the lovely vocal contribution by actress Ilene Woods. She brings a measured confidence to the beloved heroine and her singing voice is as gorgeous as the animation.

Australian designer Chad Lockwood has combined the two most iconic rides at Disneyland into one fascinating design. Using the design of "It's a Small World" with colors and characters from the Haunted Mansion - and maintaining the style of artist Mary Blair, who designed "It's a Small World" in the 1960s - Lockwood has created a design that is instantly recognizable - but you probably won't know why at first. Does this shirt scream "Disneyland" to you?

The 1950 classic Cinderella, one of the most beloved in Disney’s vault, remains the animated fairy tale classic by which all others are measured.

The G-rated film, which runs for 74 minutes, was nominated for three Academy Awards for sound, score and the song “Bibbidy-Bobbidi-Boo.” Although it didn’t take home any statues, the movie is a timeless piece of celluloid that’s squarely in the hearts of all Disney animation lovers.

Disney has scheduled another of its classic animated films for release on high-definition Blu-ray. In announcing the date for its Lady and the Tramp Diamond Edition, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment said it will deliver Cinderella on Blu-ray in fall 2012.
The 1950 movie is one of the most beloved in Disney’s vault. It’s that classic fairy tale story that has been revisited so many times in books and films, but never quite in the same way as Disney.
Of course, the film tells the story of the cinder girl who’s prevented by her evil stepmother from going to the Royal Ball. But her fairy godmother, some lovable mice and a pumpkin get Cinderella there, and just in time for her to dance with the prince. When the magic wears off at midnight, Cinderella loses her glass slipper, but not before the prince has fallen in love with her.

To celebrate what would be the 100th birthday of Mary Blair, Google has replaced its official logo on its homepage today with a colorful doodle inspired by the late Disney artist. The doodle, titled “Mary Blair’s 100th Birthday,” features a caricature of the artist, which replaces the second G in the search engine’s logo. The remaining letters spelling Google are drawn in different colors and designs, as made famous by the artist. Blair contributed artwork to such popular 1950s Disney films as ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Peter Pan.’ She left Disney animation in the mid-50s, but was later hired to work on such theme-park attractions as ‘It’s a Small...

100 years ago today, Mary Blair, an artist whose unique style was immortalized in classic Walt Disney films of the 1940s and 50s and theme parks, was born in McAlester, Oklahoma.
She was best known for the artwork she contributed to animations including Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Cinderella, and the look for It’s A Small World at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and later appeared in all Disney theme parks. Several of her illustrated children’s books from the 1950s remain in print, such as I Can Fly.
To celebrate her birthday and influential art style, Google has given her a Google Doodle, which we show you here. If you want to know more about her, her nieces have put together a web site, or you can try and find the book The Art and Flair of Mary Blair.

Illustrator worked on a number of children's books and contributed to films Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland
Google has honoured Mary Blair, an artist whose unusual style was immortalised in classic Walt Disney films of the 1940s and 50s, with its latest Google doodle.
Blair, who was born in Oklahoma on 21 October 1911, was best known for the artwork she contributed to animations including Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Cinderella. She also illustrated a number of children's books.
Blair's colourful, childlike images – vaguely reminiscent of the cubist movement – are credited with bringing modern art into popular animation and influencing a generation of illustrators.
Walt Disney was so taken with her designs that he recruited her to work on It's A Small World, an attraction that debuted at the 1964 New York World's Fair and has since been recreated in all of Disney's theme parks.

Auctions offering Disney artwork and memorabilia are fairly commonplace, but the material gathered for Profiles in History’s newest event, in conjunction with The actual envelope, in Walt Disney’s handwriting.Van Eaton Galleries, is positively staggering. There are animation and layout drawings, cels, conceptual and inspirational artwork by such great artists as Mary Blair, Eyvind Earle, and Tyrus Wong, maquettes from the original Character Model Department, artifacts from Disneyland, and much, much more—including some juicy non-Disney items like title-card treatments from MGM cartoons. But there are two headline-making Disney items of vast historical significance. One is a hand-written letter from Walt to…...

Most formats take a while to come into their own. Who can remember the first horrible DVDs? The first discs were defined by a paucity of special features, with most blurbs proudly boasting “Scene Access” and “Interactive Menus” as the carrot for you to give us those old VHS tapes. Then there was the packaging itself which came, depending on the studio, in a variety of horrible designs (the cardboard ones proffered by Warner Brothers stand out as especially awful in my memory). Disney were likewise slow to live up to recognise the potential of the new format, with the studio’s first releases – which, as it happens, included Alice in Wonderland – resolutely vanilla. Though you always sensed the marketing wing was holding back the good stuff for the fourth or fifth re-issue a couple of years down the line.

When Disney devised the concept of a full-length feature animation and proved its viability with Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs in 1937, there were many people who argued that the economics of these productions was a big issue.
Had Snow White not been a big box office success, Disney would certainly have gone bankrupt, as some 1,200 people had taken more than four years to realise.
A big part of the problem was the level of research and development that was needed to create believable animated characters was substantial, and during those early productions, well into the forties, Disney animators where inventing a highly complex skill set that allowed them to make movies in a way people had never imagined was possible.

Warren Spector wants Mickey Mouse to take out Master Chief. The acclaimed game designer behind ground-breaking titles like the original "Deus Ex" and Thief believes that Walt Disney's best-known creation has it in him to become a video game star to rival the Spartans of Halo or iconic PlayStation characters Nathan Drake and Kratos.
With his team at the Junction Point development studio, Spector's building the game that he believes will do just that. "Disney Epic Mickey" casts the world's most recognizable mouse into an adventure that plumbs the forgotten corners of Disney history, while providing a morally morphable version of Mickey. The game happens in the Wasteland, a once-peaceful retirement dimension where long-forgotten characters and amusements from Uncle Walt's empire reside. The pocket universe is the work of the Wizard from The Sorceror's Apprentice, clearly meant as an allegory to Walt himself. When the magic mirror from that same movie beckons,...

Mary Blair now has her own website. This is a giant leap forward for a woman whose name was virtually unknown to the general public during her lifetime, but whose reputation has grown with each passing year. Walt Disney had the highest regard for her work, and her bold use of color and charming character designs had a profound influence on a number of movies we all saw (including Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan) and attractions we attended at Disneyland, notably It’s a Small World. Insiders and colleagues knew how talented she was, but it’s only in recent years…...

With Alice In Wonderland arriving on disc next week, we look back at the English literature that's inspired previous Disney productions...
Disney has used mythology, historical characters, fairy tales and fables as the foundation for some amazing animated films. But, curiously for such an American icon, its also drawn on the diverse world of English literature for some of its most successful projects.
Alice In Wonderland (1951)
Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures In Wonderland became the first animated Disney feature to use classic English literature as a bedrock. In the Disney version, elements from both the original Alice adventure and the sequel Through The Looking-Glass were combined to give a strong flavour of the Carroll's perversely warped universe.
Unfortunately, UK reviewers weren't kind to it, and it was one of the first Disney productions to be accused of 'Americanising' a literary classic.

Three years ago, Warren Buffett gave each of his kids $1 billion to give away -- suddenly thrusting them into the philanthropic elite. Here's what they learned.
For all the talk of how Warren Buffett is a normal, aw-shucks Midwestern guy, we know he is not just like us. We don't play bridge with Bill Gates. We may get calls asking for capital infusions, but they're from our kids, not from Ge and Goldman. And these days, we certainly don't get 10% dividends on our stocks.
But ask Buffett about his kids -- Susie, 56, an Omaha knitting-shop owner; Howie, 54, an Illinois farmer; and Peter, 51, a New York-based new-age musician -- and he turns into your typical, gushing dad. "All three are smart. They have good judgment," he says. "They're just very decent human beings."

Okay, so maybe a more accurate title would have been Pre-Order this, but if you're a fan of Pixar and the artists behind the name, then you might want to head over to Amazon to place your order for the Ancient Book of Sex and Science. The book was created by Pixar animation designers, Nate Wragg, Scott Morse, Lou Romano, and Don Shank, and like the title says is all about the relationship between sex and science. This is the second book in a planned series of four, beginning with The Ancient Book Of Myth And War. Morse explained the genesis of the latest book and his love of all things saucy by saying, "Well, we're usually pretty introverted, so maybe that makes us a little kinkier. And there's a tradition of us loving Playboy cartoons and naughtier things in general. We all remember drawing in the margins of our textbooks when we were younger.

On Monday evening, in a hotel room in London, Kjerstin Erickson made her hit list. Laid out in Excel, it is meticulous: name, organization, responsibility--65 names in all. The next day, Erickson boarded a train and made her way to Oxford, where she knew her targets would be gathered, and then she began picking them off one by one.
Erickson is a social entrepreneur--just 25, she founded and heads a group called Forge, which encourages entrepreneurship among African refugees--and she has spent this week at the Skoll World Forum in Oxford. It's her first major conference, packed with the titans of her industry, and she's here to court donors, make connections, and seek out journalists. (Full disclosure: I met her when she glanced at my nametag and said triumphantly: "You're on my list!") Her week has been at turns exhilarating and frustrating, not unlike her career.
