(Cbr) Fox and Hutch Parker Entertainment are moving ahead sight unseen with a new project called "Invisible". Deadline reports the pitch comes from Dan Blank, a special effects expert who’s worked on everything from "Smallville" and "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" to "Avatar" and "Watchmen". Blank also directed the sushi chefs vs. giant sea creatures short "Monster Roll". No details about "Invisible" were given, aside from that it’s similar to "Chronicle". "Brotherhood" and "Demonic" writer Doug Simon has been tapped to pen the screenplay. Hutch Parker previously produced "The Wolverine", is currently finishing up "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and will soon move on to the "Fantastic Four" reboot.

After handling visual effects for such blockbusters as Watchmen, Avatar and Terminator: Salvation, Dan Blank is aiming to showcase his directing chops in Invisible, a sci-fi feature that he just successfully pitched to Fox.
The story is still under wraps, but Invisible has been described as “following in the vein of superhero sci-fi thriller Chronicle.” Given that Chronicle was an exciting breath of fresh air for both the superhero and found-footage genres, it’s not hard to start getting excited for Invisible.
One aspect of this project that’s especially promising is the fact that Doug Simon, the writer behind SXSW Audience Award winner Brotherhood and a 2013 Black List script called Burn Site, is attached to pen the screenplay, from Blank’s idea.
If Blank is signed to direct, as seems likely, it won’t be his first time getting behind the camera for an idea he created. In 2012, he directed Monster Roll,...

Why Watch? Clearly a sequel to Jiro Dreams of Sushi, this ingenious proof of concept short from Dan Blank features an ancient promise broken, giant sea creatures exacting revenge and brave sushi chefs taking the big knife to them in order to save mankind. It’s construction is flawless, using well-timed editing and great visuals to deliver the first act of what they hope will be a feature film to come. Plus, the massive CGI monsters are thoroughly impressive. Beyond the crazy concept and execution lies a great new take on the Japanese monster movie. Where Godzilla represented a nuclear reality, Monster Roll pivots off the over-fishing problem currently burdening the island country. It’s a creature feature that retains its social context, which is commendable. It’s also commendable that the short is hugely ridiculous fun even without soy sauce on it. They’re starting a Kickstarter page soon, and...

Every now and again, something comes along in the world of low budget horror movies that is so jaw-droppingly brilliant that it genuinely makes you stop and pay attention. Monster Roll, a new short film that was released online recently, is one of these rare things and is well worth the six minutes of your time that it runs for.
Written and directed by Dan Blank, Monster Roll harks back to the great tradition of Far Eastern movies that pitted mankind against all manner of gigantic creatures intent on wreaking havoc on the nearest major city, and pits a group of sushi chefs against sea monsters as they battle supersized squid and colossal crabs.
Producers Matt Miller and Erich Lochner explained that the Monster Roll short, which they are hoping will help secure enough interest and funding to make a full-length feature, came about because they sorely missed the tone of the big,...

In a world where the seas are over fished, Sushi Chefs must band together to fight off monstrous sea creatures who have come out of the deep sea in search of food. Well, it makes sense to me. This incredibly fun short film, Monster Roll, was directed by Dan Blank. He and his cohorts couldn't resist making this proof-of-concept for the fishy premise, "It's a crazy idea, but one we just really wanted to see made. So, we made it." Their hope is to get it made into a feature.
The effects aren't quite there yet but I love the whole vibe they're going for. I especially like the opening and closing narration which gives a classic martial arts epic feel to it -- explaining the mythology that in ancient Japan, man made a pact with the sea to "kill only what they eat."
Do you think this would make for a good feature?...

Dan Blank has created a hell of an entertaining short that he describes as a “Proof-of-concept for a feature about sushi chefs fighting sea monsters.”
Now that I think about it, sushi chefs are the heroes of many Japanese restaurants (in addition to being the guardians of the sacred craft of seafood and rice), and are thus the perfect defenders of humanity for a movie about attacking sea monsters.
And here’s a making-of video:...

"A great war has begun between man and the sea..." We've got another awesome short today! Hopefully you're not having sushi for lunch? This rather amusing proof-of-concept short, directed by Dan Blank, is called Monster Roll, and it's a funny high concept comedy about sushi chefs vs sea monsters. "It's a crazy idea, but one we just really wanted to see made. So, we made it." The story is fun, it's kind of violent, and while the effects do need more work, I think everything feels fine in context and plays well anyway. It's just a highly entertaining proof-of-concept. It gets really good when they step outside of "Sushi Hut" in La. Enjoy! Monster Roll was debuted online via Vimeo today. It was written & directed by Dan Blank. As introduced: "Proof-of-concept for a feature about sushi chefs fighting sea monsters. It's a crazy idea, but one we just really wanted...

Deep down inside it's a battle you know you need to see on the big screen: Sushi chefs versus a giant sea monster. Because once they defeat the beast we'll all get to feast on its tasty goodness. Writer-director Dan Blank certainly wants to see the battle happen and so, well, he's made the battle happen.Blank has teamed with producers Matt Miller and Erich Lochner to create Monster Roll, a short film he describes like this: We're really excited to finally release Monster Roll online. When a brush fire started near a ranger station in the mountains northeast of Los Angeles on August 26, no one would have guessed that over a week later, smoke would still be spewing over the city. The Station Fire has claimed 148,000 acres in Angeles National Forest, as well as the lives of two firefighters, making it the largest fire in Los Angeles history (and to make matters worse, an arson investigation is now underway). The billowing mushroom-like clouds of smoke that puffed up over the city those first few days made for a stunning backdrop for local filmmakers who captured nature's fury in a flurry of timelapse videos. Here are five of the most stunning.
