“I despise auditions,” Marlon Brando barked as he launched into the audition for his role in The Godfather. It was his idea, I reminded him, so he himself had caused his actors angst, not the studio.
Actors’ angst was much in evidence yet again last weekend at the SAG Awards. Brilliant performances were being honored, formidable talent was on display, and Barbra Streisand clearly owned the room.
But the evening had a problematic subtext: The anticipated turnaround in job opportunities hadn’t happened across Hollywood. The epoch of “peak TV” seems to be drifting away, with words like “contraction” echoing in the trade.
To be sure, none of this inhibited SAG honorees from thanking their casting directors for their good picks and even endorsing the Academy’s decision to create a new entity: a casting branch.

It.s not clear at exactly what point in history the feature-length Nike commercial that was Space Jam became some sort of cult classic. What is clear is that it happened, because the idea that there might be a Space Jam 2 is being met with some of the same terror that the internet usually reserves for female Ghostbusters. Now even the basketball players that you forgot were in the film are chiming in on the topic, as Muggsy Bogues doesn.t think they should make a sequel. There has been talk for quite some time that a Space Jam sequel might be in the works, starring current NBA superstar Lebron James. Some have difficulty seeing a sequel being made and according to For The Win, Bogues is one of them. I can.t see them making another one. It wouldn.t have the same appeal. It just wouldn.t have...

LeBron James' performance in Trainwreck, Judd Apatow's new comedy starring Amy Schumer, was far and away my favorite aspect of the film, even if James was only playing an enhanced version of himself. At 6-foot-8 he is a natural physical presence, and the guy has a lot of charisma, oodles of charm and an impressive knack for comedy. As mixed as I am on LeBron the basketball player, I am definitely on board with LeBron the actor. Much to my delight -- as well as the delight of others who liked his performance and all the true LeBron fans out there -- we could very well be seeing King James on screen again soon. According to Espn, LeBron's SpringHill Entertainment just inked a deal with Warner Bros. that includes plans for future films, television series and original digital programming. Warner Bros. President and CEO Kevin Tsujihara issued...

Looney Tunes icon Chuck Jones hated it, kids loved it, and the rest of the world didn’t know what to make of it. We’re talking about Joe Pytka’s 1996 film Space Jam, of course. At the height of his popularity, basketball star Michael Jordan appeared in the movie as a mentor/captive to a slew of animated Looney Tunes characters as they planned a round of ball against a group of alien slavers. Yes, we’re talking about that movie — the one in which Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, Charles Barkley, Muggsy Bogues and Shawn Bradley were all turned into giant basketball-playing “Monstars.” Everyone needs a paycheck sometimes, we suppose. Last month, a group of actors and all-star ballers got together to perform a live read of Space...

Remember the '90s? Sure you do. The music was grungier. The Marky Marks were Markier. You had to choose between your phone and the Internet. And the ponytails were occasionally sideways.

In 1996, Michael Jordan and fellow NBA players Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Muggsy Bogues, Larry Johnson and Shawn Bradley were featured in Space Jams. A movie that combined live action basketball stars with Looney Tunes stars, like Bugs Bunny, Tweet Bird, Porky Pig and newcomer Lola Bunny. The iconic cartoon characters, with the help of Michael Jordan defeated an alien race, the Monstars, in a basketball game with high stakes. Well the internet is buzzing today because superstar basketball player Lebron "King" James tweeted that he'd like to be in a sequel. With the best athletes in the world competing for Gold this week in London, it's time to turn our attention to something that hasn't even been invented yet: Movie Olympics! Here, Moviefone pits together some of your favorite characters in Olympic events. In 1992, the U.S.A. Men's Olympic Basketball team (better known as the Dream Team) stomped their opponents by an average margin of 44 points (!) per game. Needless to say, the squad went on to win the Gold Medal that year, supplanting their place in playground lore. However, for the Movie Olympics, rest assured that those types of blowouts will not be happening. That's because this year's basketball event has a very strong group of competitors going head-to-head for "Best Team In The Land" bragging rights. From the TuneSquad to the Hickory Huskers, let's take a look below at those participating. When you're finished, make sure to vote for...

Charles Barkley didn’t exactly bring his A-game to last night’s forgettable episode of Saturday Night Live. Perhaps NBC had just worked him too hard all day long (before heading to Studio 8H, the basketball legend contributed as a football commentator) because despite having some passable moments and being an all-around gracious host (at the end of the episode he gave a nice shout-out to the hardworking SNL cast) something was still amiss last night.
It certainly didn’t help matters much that — thanks to the do-or-die game between the New Orleans Saints and the Detroit Lions — the episode...

We're about three weeks from the release of "The Expendables," Sylvester Stallone's ode to '80s action movies and anti-aging supplements. Posters are starting to pop up around New York City. I spotted one on my commute into Manhattan yesterday; it's embedded there at the top of the post. Anything strike you about it?
Look carefully and marvel at the magic of Photoshop. Here's a closer angle on Stallone and Dolph Lundgren.
Eyeballing it, I'd say Lundgren's maybe three inches taller than Stallone in this image. But back when these two guys squared off in "Rocky IV" Dolph towered over Sly. Like a game of hoops between Manute Bol and Muggsy Bogues towered. Remember?
Granted we have no idea how many apple boxes Lundgren's standing on in that shot, but back in 1985, Stallone only came up to Ivan Drago's nose. 20 years later he's caught a growth spurt -- sort...

Right now every sports reporter in the world is eyeing LeBron James and wondering where he'll decide to sign a contract now that he's a free agent. Those of us who wouldn't know LeBron from Muggsy Bogues, though, have our eye on another story, Variety's report that LeBron's acting debut in the basketball comedy Ballers will be indefinitely delayed thanks to script problems. Apparently writers Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz had been tinkering with the script with hopes of starting production next month, during the tiny window in which James is not signing new basketball contracts, endorsing more products, or somehow enjoying his fabulous wealth. The movie wouldn't have put too many demands on James's acting skills-- based on what we reported back in March, he'll play himself in a comedy about middle-aged men who sign up for a fantasy basketball camp, where James is their coach and apparently gets...
