This post contains spoilers for "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always."
It should come as no surprise that "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always" is completely filled with nostalgia. Unlike most other anniversary specials for the beloved tokusatsu franchise, "Once & Always" does not feature several iterations of Power Rangers meeting, like "Forever Red" or "Once a Ranger." Instead, this is entirely focused on the first series in the franchise, the multi-season "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" and its two generations of Rangers.
The special focuses on the return of Rita Repulsa, who has got herself a new robot body and brings tragedy to the Rangers. When Repulsa's armies start attacking Rangers around the world, new heroes will rise and the Power Rangers will see their legacy and their abilities tested. "Once & Always" sees the return of Zack Taylor (Walter Jones) and Billy Cranston (David Yost) from the first team, as...

Some of the most memorable characters in Power Rangers history are assembling for a 30th anniversary special on Netflix. (Key word: some.)
Among those not returning is Amy Jo Johnson, who played Kimberly Hart, the first-ever Pink Ranger on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, from 1993 to 1995. And lest there be any confusion about why Kimberly isn’t suiting back up for old time’s sake, Johnson has cleared the air in a tweet.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers made its debut way back in 1993, instantly becoming a hit for the after school crowd. Thirty years later, Netflix has put together a special honoring three decades of a television franchise that remains in the hearts of those who grew up with it. The special, subtitled Once & Always, is making waves for bringing together some of the original cast, including Blue Ranger Billy (David Yost) and Black Ranger Zach (Walter Emanuel Jones). Joining them from Season 2 will be Steve Cardenas who played the second Red Ranger Rocky, and Karan Ashley who played the second Yellow Ranger Aisha, along with Johnny Yong Bosch who played the second Black Ranger Adam. Season 3’s Catherine Sutherland, who played the second Pink Ranger Kat, is also returning. Some very sad absences from the original cast include original Yellow Ranger Trini, played by Thuy Trang, who died in a car accident...

"Power Rangers" is one of the biggest franchises to come out of the '90s. Based on the Japanese franchise "Super Sentai," the "Power Rangers" series follows a group of teenagers chosen to fight evil with the help of super suits and giant robots that morph together to make an even bigger robot.
When it premiered, the series was the closest '90s kids got to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You got a team of superheroes fighting cartoonish villains by punching the hell out of them, with a more diverse team than even the current MCU has.
And just like the MCU, the "Power Rangers" franchise has an expansive universe with a couple of different timelines, and stories that go to space, and travel to different galaxies, yet they all somehow have the same technology as our timeline. Still, no matter how many seasons there are, there is arguably no...

Voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch is going back to his roots. In a tweet from Crunchyroll, the voice actor confirmed that he will be reprising his role as Vash the Stampede in the soon-to-come English dub of "Trigun: Stampede." Said dub will be arriving on January 21, 2023, a mere two weeks after the premiere of "Stampede" this past January 7.
Yong Bosch is a prolific voice actor and Vash in the original "Trigun" anime was his very first voice-over role. He'd acted before, most famously as Adam Park (the second Black Ranger) in "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers." However, during an Adr session, a producer decided he had a "hero's voice" and asked him to audition for animated roles. A few weeks later, he was voicing Vash. The return of Yong Bosch in "Stampede" comes as a pleasant surprise. He'd previously expressed uncertainty about returning and Vash's original Japanese voice actor, Masaya Onosaka,...

A flaw with the Haruhi Suzumiya series lies in its massive fantastical elements. The stories could get really grand, insane and the characters just had to roll with whatever was thrown their way. The animated series never had a sense of real dramatic pay-off. Don’t get me wrong, the storylines are fun to watch but those moments of drama when they did happen captured human emotion brilliantly and you can’t help but wish for more of it. Well, that’s what the movie taps into and excels in turning a story known largely for its comedy into something much more grounded.
The premise of the movie is self-explanatory given what the title is. Haruhi disappears. Literally, Kyon wakes up on a cold December...

My Hero Academia has only been around for a few years, but it’s already gained mass acclaim and become one of the most popular anime series in years. The series consistently pushes its characters to challenging new places, but it can be difficult for supplemental feature films to capture the same level of importance and feel like they’re not stuck inside of some non-canonical bubble.
My Hero Academia’s first film, Two Heroes, was considered a success by fans, but the series is now in a more complex place where its endgame is increasingly on its mind. Thankfully, My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising isn’t just an improvement over Two Heroes, but it actually feels like an important chapter from these characters’ lives that won’t just be conveniently forgotten when everything’s said and done.

It’s hard to imagine that a general American audience might take to new Japanese anime “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising” beyond the already robust fanbase of “My Hero Academia,” the popular shonen-style boy’s adventure manga and anime about teenage superhero Izuku Midoriya as he leads his super-powered high school classmates in becoming better team players and aspiring heroes.
Which isn’t to say that uninitiated moviegoers will have trouble understanding the plot of “Heroes Rising,” which follows Izuku and U.A. High School’s Class 1-a as they try to stop multi/over-powered villain Nine (Johnny Yong Bosch) from killing the residents of Nabu Island. “Heroes Rising” is, like the ongoing anime that it supplements, full of expository dialogue and flashbacks that help new viewers understand what they’re looking at, and why it matters.
Still, it’s hard to imagine anybody but fans caring about the movie’s big climax,...

Hiroyuki Imaishi is–in the very best way–one of animation’s finest ambassadors of Adhd. His 2004 directorial debut, Dead Leaves, is a masterpiece of sci-fi action insanity: 50 minutes of delirious stylized motion, featuring ultra-angular “superflat” designs combining the most expressive deformities of Eastern and Western comics and cartoons; a psychedelic adrenaline rush that diffuses the full density of a pulpy jailbreak action flick into half the running time and several times the visual scope. It is the pure cinematic embodiment of a film viewer, and filmmaker, whose bountiful imagination strikes dynamite creative synthesis with a short-fuse attention span. Dead Leaves was a minor event at the time, consigned to direct-to-dvd release overseas and ultimately, perhaps, too aggressively weird and explicit to capture the fancy of either mainstream critics or otaku. But 15 years later, Imaishi–who found breakout success in TV anime and co-founded his own studio, Trigger–has become...

David Yost (Blue Ranger/Billy Cranston)
David Yost landed the role of Blue Ranger Billy Cranston just three months after moving to California in 1993. In an intriguing piece of trivia, his character was named after Bryan Cranston, who at the time was doing voice work for Power Rangers producer Haim Saban.
Yost appeared in more than 200 episodes of Power Rangers, making him the only Ranger to appear in every episode of the original series.
