There’s a new trailer for World on Fire, the Masterpiece war drama from The A Word’s Peter Bowker that bows Sunday, October 15, on PBS.
The series looks at World War II through the eyes of ordinary people from all sides of the conflict. The new seven-episode season will follow the first year of the war, starting with the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and ending with the Battle of Britain.
The cast includes Lesley Manville (The Crown), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), Ahad Raza Mir (Resident Evil), Mark Bonnar (Guilt) and Gregg Sulkin (Runaways).
In 2019, PBS joined the BBC for a second season of the drama that starred Helen Hunt as a war correspondent. Season 2 has already dropped in the U.K, where viewers have noticed the absence of Hunt, as well as Sean Bean, Arthur Darvill and Brian J. Smith — due to a combination of scheduling...

When “World on Fire” premiered on the BBC in September 2019, no one could have known that the World War II drama would be one of the last major scripted debuts on the public broadcaster before the pandemic.
The PBS Masterpiece co-production — which follows the interconnected lives of British and European families during the outbreak of war — confirmed it would return at the end of its Season 1 finale, but the onset of the Covid-19 crisis just four months later and its impact on global production made the prospect of setting up a continent-spanning war drama all the more unlikely.
Yet with some heroic scheduling, rewritten scripts and clever location and CGI combos, Season 2 returned to British screens on Sunday after a four-year hiatus, premiering to an audience indelibly changed by a global and life-altering event of their own.
“I wrote the bulk of the first two episodes during lockdown, and suddenly,...

Shanghai Film Festival Sets Dates For Return As In-Person Event
Shanghai International Film Festival (Siff) has confirmed that this year’s edition will take place June 9-18, 2023, marking the festival’s return as an in-person event following its cancellation last year. The festival was scheduled to take place as a physical event in June 2022, but had to cancel shortly before it commenced due to strict lockdown restrictions imposed on the city of Shanghai when Covid-19 levels started to spike. It was previously announced that Siff Market, the festival’s industry platform, is moving to Longemont Hotel, which places it closer to Siff’s main venue at the Shanghai Film Art Center and adjacent Crowne Plaza Hotel. As in previous years, the festival will host several competition strands through its Golden Goblet (Jinjue) Awards, including feature films, Asian new talent, documentaries, animation and short films. Centred on a chaotic family coming to terms with an autism diagnosis, the Israeli comedy-drama “Yellow Peppers” never aired on British television, but it’s had a pronounced influence on British TV schedules over the past decade. First, it begat Peter Bowker’s direct adaptation “The A Word,” which over three series relocated several of its predecessor’s storylines to a picturesque Lake District setting, achieving the holy-grail combo of excellent reviews and high ratings for the BBC before finding a transatlantic home on Sundance TV.
Now “The A Word” generates its own variation in “Ralph & Katie,” a six-part spin-off charting the further adventures of soccer-mad Ralph (Leon Harrop) and his baker beloved Katie (Sarah Gordy). Noteworthy as characters with Down’s syndrome played by actors with Down’s syndrome, these lovebirds first won hearts during a third-series subplot on “The A Word,” moving in together against the advice of their overprotective,...

When His Dark Materials writer Jack Thorne stepped up to the Edinburgh TV Festival MacTaggart podium last year in an audience-less room, he wanted to address an issue that had felt hopelessly ignored in the mainstream through past decades.
The prolific British scribe’s proclamation that UK TV had “utterly and totally” failed disabled people drew headlines across the country and moved the industry up a gear in solving deep-seated legacy issues both behind and in-front of the camera that impact a minority which makes up around 20 of the population.
“What Jack did so brilliantly was contextualize how the industry can conduct itself within a wider conversation around the country’s attitudes toward disability and treatment during the pandemic,” says Peter Bowker, acclaimed British TV writer of the BBC’s influential autism drama The A Word. “Presenting the wider context is smart as you challenge the industry by saying ‘Don...

BBC content director Charlotte Moore has warned that unless diversity is prioritized in the UK TV industry, the sector will not survive.
Speaking today at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Moore unveiled new programs including an investigation into the impact of race on coronavirus by actor David Harewood and a spin off of World On Fire writer Peter Bowker’s hit series The A Word written by disabled writers. These shows will be among those to spearhead BBC1’s line-up next season.
Moore also highlighted Mangrove, the first film in Steve Macqueen’s series Small Axe, which will air this autumn.
She said globally diversity was now recognized as a key issue for the industry, explaining: “The commitment is there because I think not only creatively is it the best thing to do but business-wise, the whole business will benefit from this because that’s what the audience wants to watch.

Over last many decades, quite a few films and series have been set around the second World War. Especially in the West, the subject has fascinated many filmmakers and actors for long. Hence, when a British series World on Fire has just been released on Sony Liv, it is exciting to check out what does creator Peter Bowker have to offer, and the perspective that he brings in with this epic 7-part series where each episode lasts for near 1 hour each.
The first thing that strikes about World on Fire is the kind of production values that come along with it. Never once do you think that it is a TV/web series in the offering. World on Fire‘s Webster O’Connor (Brian J. Smith) and Albert Fatou (Parker Sawyers) have a romantic relationship that transcends nationality and race, yet their very existence in 1940 Paris presents untold dangers. Some may have an idea of how their plot may end, but World On Fire ensures the audience can still hold onto hope through well-acted emotions and depictions of their lives in Paris.
Episode 1 introduces Webster as a doctor in the American hospital in Paris. His aunt Nancy Campbell (Helen Hunt) warns him the war is coming, but he thinks her line of work has made her overly cautious. When Webster goes to an underground jazz club to burn off the stress of work, he sees Albert. He’s instantly attracted to Albert, despite coming from and living in opposite worlds.

It starts small: A pair of plucky young Brits crash a packed Manchester rally for the British Union of Fascists (aka blackshirts) to literally sing out their disaffection for a political movement they refuse to support. They’re kicked around, tossed out, thrown into prison, where the worst thing they have to endure is their bickering parents who object to their burgeoning romance. For better, Peter Bowker’s PBS series “World on Fire” is dedicated to following the interconnected lives of a select handful of people thrown into the tumult of World War II.
Hopscotching across England, Germany, Poland, and France, “World on Fire” tracks the first year of the war, a complicated and horrifying rise that often hinges on the sense that things aren’t so bad, or that they may not get worse, or that the hints that something far darker is occurring aren’t just distasteful rumors.

Helen Hunt and her World on Fire castmates Julia Brown, Jonah Hauer-King and Zofia Wichlacz talked about the upcoming PBS World War II drama that provides a very personal perspective Friday at the TCA Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, CA. The series, which follows the intertwining fates of ordinary people in five countries as they grapple with the effects of the war in their everyday lives, has already received a second season order. Season one is set in 1939 and season two will follow the characters into 1940, per executive producer and writer Peter Bowker.
Bowker explained that he and executive producer Damien Timmer were fascinated by the 1970s documentary World at War and how that documentary provided inspiration for World on Fire as they attempted to make a fictional version that provided various perspectives on the war as that documentary did. “Television had changed and people were investing more in longform...

Exclusive: Christie Watson’s The Language of Kindness, a story of acts of compassion in the nursing profession, is to be turned into a television series after Mammoth Screen, the British production company behind dramas including Poldark and Victoria, optioned the rights. I understand the ITV-owned firm has set Rachel Bennette, who adapted Zadie Smith’s Nw for BBC Two, to write.
The book, which comes out May 3 in the UK via publisher Chatto & Windus, is an account of the medical profession defined by acts of care, compassion and kindness from birth to death. Watson, who was a nurse for twenty years, tells stories including the nursing of a premature baby who has miraculously made it through the night, a patient’s agonizing heart-lung transplant, and the hair-washing of a child fatally injured in a fire, attempting to remove the toxic smell of smoke before the grieving family arrive.
