With the months-long WGA walkout looking set for imminent resolve, Starz is getting ahead of the inevitable post-strike culling. The network has canceled four original series — including one that had yet to even air.
On the block are wrestling drama Heels, comedy Run the World and dramedy Blindspotting, each of which recently aired its second season. Additionally, drama The Venery of Samantha Bird will not resume production after stopping, mid first season, when the WGA strike began in May.
Dropping four series at once is not a minor move for the cable network. Starz recently announced an end date for longtime hit Outlander, which will leave the channel and its sister streamer largely reliant on the enduring Power spinoffs and a handful of other programs like horror comedy Shining Vale. (Keeping with spin-offs, Starz has also greenlit a 10-episode prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood from the executive producers of the original.

Starz is canceling four of its series, Variety has learned exclusively. Specifically, “Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” will not get new seasons at the cable network, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” Season 1 is being scrapped without airing.
“Heels,” “Run the World,” and “Blindspotting” all recently aired their second season at Starz, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” was in production on its first season. Production was shut down, however, at the onset of the WGA strike. It was reported at the time that only two episodes of the first season were left to shoot.
“The Venery of Samantha Bird” was to star Katherine Langford as the title character. Per the official logline, “Samantha, while visiting family in New England, reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But the couple’s picture-perfect love story isn’t as sweet as it seems on the surface.

Tracy McMillan, the creator and executive producer of Onyx Collective/Hulu’s newest dramedy “UnPrisoned,” says she didn’t create the series as a “favor” for the audience, but rather as an outlet to work through her own trauma.
She’s an author, realtionship expert, TV writer and now the creator of “UnPrisoned,” a half-hour dramedy based on McMillan’s life adjusting to her now-late father re-entering her life after being freed from prison. The series stars Kerry Washington, who plays Paige, the “UnPrisoned” version of McMillan. “I’ve got one daughter, and you’ve got one daddy,” Edwin (Delroy Lindo) reminds his daughter Paige (Kerry Washington) in the trailer for the new Hulu series “UnPrisoned.” Their relationship is at the heart of the comedy, in which they reunite after Edwin spent 17 years in prison on drug charges. Based on writer and executive producer Tracy McMillan’s own life, the show will chronicle how that reunion unfolds and the impact Edwin has on Paige and her son, Finn (Faly Rakotohavana), when he moves in with them. All ten episodes premiere on Friday, March 10. Watch the full trailer above.
The trailer also offers glimpses at the adventures that await the family: Paige pursues a dream of owning a home — and gets a cathartic moment when she takes a sledgehammer to the dated wood paneling in the living room; Edwin teaches Finn how to drive and how to deal...

“Severance,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Women Talking” took home top prizes at the Writers Guild of America Awards, Hollywood’s final major awards ceremony before next week’s 95th Oscars.
But the bigger message that emerged from the night was how the industry’s scribe tribe is engaged and ready to back their guild in the upcoming contract talks for a new master film and TV contract.
“Welcome to the Writers Guild Awards and strike authorization vote,” said host Janelle James, star of “Abbott Elementary,” at the start of the Los Angeles ceremony, held at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel. Comedian Michelle Buteau led the New York festivities, which ran concurrently at New York’s Edison Ballroom.
Buteau kicked off New York’s night with a joke that broke the ice regarding the WGA’s looming contract negotiations: “I hope everyone enjoyed the cocktail hour. That was the studios’ counteroffer to streaming residuals.

The cast of Hulu’s latest dramedy “Unprisoned” kept the family spirit alive at the show’s premiere at the Hollywood Legion Theater on Thursday night.
The show’s cast and crew — including Kerry Washington, Delroy Lindo, Faly Rakotohavana, Marque Richardson, Jee Young Han, Jordyn McIntosh, showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser and creator Tracy McMillan — examined what it means to be a “traditional” family on the red carpet before a screening of the first two episodes.
The series follows relationship therapist and single mom Paige (Washington), “whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad (Lindo) gets out of prison and moves to her house to live with her and her teenage son,” according to the show’s official synopsis.
“I wanted to show a family that every person in America would identify with, even though they’re facing very specific circumstances,” McMillan told Variety. “This is at its heart, a father-daughter story.

“UnPrisoned” actor Delroy Lindo and showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser have found that opportunities for Black creatives have increased since their early years in the television and film business, saying that their new Hulu series serves as a “present-day corrective” in tackling systemic issues.
“We’re absolutely making progress,” Bowser – who has produced several hit shows, including “Living Single,” “A Different World” and “Dear White People” – said during a panel discussion for Hulu and Onyx Collective’s new dramedy on the 2023 Water TCA Press Tour.
The scripted series, which stars Lindo, Kerry Washington, Marque Richardson, Faly Rakotohavana and Jordyn McIntosh, is created by Tracy McMillan and inspired by her life. The half-hour comedy follows the life of a messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mom whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad gets out of prison and moves in with her and her teenage son.

The series is titled “Unprisoned” and has received an eight-episode order. It is inspired by the life of series creator Tracy McMillan. In the show, a messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mom (Washington) has her life turned right-side-up when her dad (Lindo) gets out of prison and moves in with her and her teenage son. The show is the first comedy to be ordered to series at Onyx.
“From the moment Tracy McMillan brought this project to Simpson Street, we knew that it had the potential to be provocative, groundbreaking and life-affirming,” Washington said. “I love this show. Visitors to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., usually start their tour in the belly of the facility, where exhibits drive home the horrifying efficiency with which millions of African people were snatched from their homeland and sold into slavery. As the tour continues upward through the building, visitors traverse centuries of the Black experience in America until they reach an exhibit reflecting the present day.

Update Saturday: Andrea Bordeaux has spoken out about her exit from the Starz/Lionsgate TV series Run the World.
“Getting the opportunity to play Ella on #RunTheWorld was an absolute dream come true,” Bordeaux wrote on Instagram. “I would have loved to continue to grow with this delightful character and having to come to terms with this sharp turn in my life, my dream, and career these past several weeks has been heartbreaking beyond words.”
Bordeaux said that “Lionsgate made no efforts to find a workable solution” and that she was fired from the series for not complying with the new Covid vaccine mandate.
“My heart is with all of the people around the world who feel that they are losing so much due to their choice to stand in their convictions and to honor their deepest core beliefs,” Bordeaux added.
