Gunsmoke was one of the most popular television shows ever to hit the air. The network, CBS, knew what it had on its hands after its 1955 premiere and milked it for 20 seasons before suddenly canceling it in 1975. The Western genre later died off, as its wave of popularity never quite returned to form. Here’s a list of five other vintage television shows to dig into if Gunsmoke was your jam.

CineSavant reaches back one year to pick up a notable low-key horror from the team of Levy-Gardner-Laven and good old United Artists. They have a respected actor, a workable concept and a horror screenplay from an unusual source for the 1950s . . . a (gasp) woman. More civilized monster movies just aren’t out there, although this one could have used a more creative title.

I long ago gave up keeping track of all the aberrant vampire movies that were produced after horror became a direct-to-video staple and finally a streaming staple.

Robert Wise's taut noir suspenser about the Mafia takeover of a small city is like an underworld Invasion of the Body Snatchers. John Forsythe's newsman slowly realizes that gambling corruption has infiltrated the business district, city hall, and even his close associates; he's expected to become a crook too, or else. Great docudrama style aided by a special deep-focus lens; Estes Kefauver makes a personal appearance touting the crime-busting Washington committee that inspired the picture. Have you got a hankering for old school Clint Eastwood Western goodness that an afternoon of rewatching the Dirty Harry movies just can't sate? Then you may want to consider investing in the recent slew of DVD releases of the classic series Rawhide which ran for eight seasons with consistently strong stories of conflict and justice in a life spent on the cattle trail. Supporting Eastwood's leading man Rowdy Yates was a cast that included Eric Fleming, James Murdock, Paul Brinegar, and Steve Raines, all of whom added their own flavor of rugged charm to the proceedings. The latest season to be released is the sixth (divided unnecessarily into two volumes) and it sees the series going strong for 31 episodes with a great ratio of strong episodes to forgettable ones including the series' first two-parter.
