- He retired to run a private paramedic service.
- In 1964 he invested all his money in, and directed, Legend of the Northwest (1978) (aka "Bearheart of the Great Northwest"), starring Fritz Feld, Marshall Reed and Anna Lee. It was never released and ruined him financially. It seemed to have finalized his breach with Hollywood and his first wife.

- A good friend of the Roy Rogers family. He first met Roy and Dale Evans at a charity luncheon in Beverly Hills, where they were the only people dressed in Western outfits. Cheryl Rogers-Barnett recalls that she and her friends "just adored him, and who wouldn't? He's a terrific actor but an even better human being".

- As of July 2001 he was raising horses with his wife Hermine at their ranch in Santa Barbara County, CA.
