“Roma” was the big winner at the BAFTA Awards in London, winning Best Film and Best Director even as “The Favourite” won more prizes overall. Yorgos Lanthimos’ regal period piece led all film with seven wins after likewise picking up the most nominations (12), with Olivia Colman (Best Actress), Rachel Weisz (Best Supporting Actress), and screenwriters Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara among the honorees; it was also named Outstanding British Film.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” star Rami Malek continued his awards-season dominance after also winning Best Actor laurels at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild, with Mahershala Ali doing the same in the Supporting category for “Green Book.”

As co-producer of "Ender's Game," the rebooted Digital Domain 3.0 has a lot more at stake than cool zero-g and simulated battles in space. One of La's few remaining VFX studios (now under the post-bankruptcy ownership of Sun Innovation and Reliance MediaWorks), Dd is also experimenting with content creation as a new business model, and the rest of the industry is watching closely. So far, so good, if not spectacular: "Ender's Game" led the box office last weekend with an opening take of $27 million. And while former Dd CEO Ed Ulbrich suggested at the recent Visual Effects Society Summit that content creation is a worthwhile concept, he cautioned that you obviously have to mitigate the risk to offset it. As expected, the VFX is noteworthy and deserving of an Oscar nomination. Director Gavin Hood wanted an immersive, holographic-like depiction of the zero-g Battle Room, and Dd (under the supervision of Matthew Butler...

Who Bombed Judi Bari? is one of the most extraordinary documentaries -- actually one of the most extraordinary films -- I have ever seen. It accomplishes something extremely out-of-the-ordinary: It not only substantially and vividly makes its point about environmental issues and the sizable contribution environmental activist Judi Bari made during her lifetime, but as it progresses it enters the domain of the "transcendental," the rarest of cinematic feats.
Who Bombed Judi Bari? is much, much more than an environmental activist documentary. Directed and edited by Mary Liz Thomson, and produced by Darryl Cherney (who endured the bombing and its aftereffects alongside Judi), it creates an intense, often amusing, wrenching, and ultimately extraordinarily inspiring cinematic experience.
Compounding its excellence is that it speaks to this moment in the history of the U.S. and the world. Though the film centers on the life of environmental activist Judi Bari (from 1990 until...

Crowded House said it best in the lyrics “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream its over.” Yes, the awards season officialy came to an end tonight at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, CA. Tears, jubilation, substance and style were all memorable moments at the 84th Academy Awards hosted by Billy Crystal. With Sacha Baron Cohen’s shenanigans earlier on the red carpet and no huge upsets, Cirque du Soleil’s performance was the highlight of the evening.

"Hugo" took home the most awards with five, but it didn't earn any of the big awards. "The Artist" took home Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, while Best Actress (in a bit of a surprise, considering Viola Davis' previous wins) went to Meryl Streep, and the Supporting awards went to Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer, both of which have won all awards season.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."
Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.
There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help.

The 84th Academy Awards will pay homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood. The perceived Oscar frontrunner, .The Artist,. is a black-and-white silent movie, while one of the Oscar Best Picture contenders, .Hugo,. touches upon the life of Georges Méliès and his magical .Trip to the Moon. (1902). Even Marilyn Monroe is being honored via a Best Actress nomination for Michelle Williams who played the icon in .My Week with Marilyn..
Amidst the glamour and the spectacle, this is one of the most unpredictable Oscars in recent memory. There is no clear-cut favorite. "The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

Here’s a glimpse inside the Oscar Nominees Luncheon for the 84th Academy Awards which took place in Beverly Hills, California, Monday, February 6, 2012. The 84th Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. On the menu was chopped vegetable salad, roasted Asian barbecued duck, soy-mirin seared Atlantic Salmon and a trio of sorbets in a chocolate cup.
Anne Thompson reported, “Oscarcast co-producer Brian Grazer promised a classy show. Filming of the Billy Crystal intro skit is under way (along with interviews with many of the nominees) — “everyone is in the film,” he said. The Kodak Theatre stage will be dressed like an old-time movie palace to sell the theme of going out to the movies. “Seeing films in that environment is a magnifier of how you feel emotionally,” he said. “You’ll feel like...

Update (January 30, 2012): Australian producer Grant Hill is one of four producers that will accept the Oscar should Terence Malick's Tree of Life win Best Picture. The film's nominees were originally listed as 'to be determined', following the Academy's decision that only a maximum of three producers would be recognised per best picture contender.
It was decided on Friday that Tree of Life represented 'extraordinary circumstances' and the rule was waived. Should the film upset popular contenders Hugo and The Artist, the Oscar will be accepted by Hill alongside fellow producers Sarah Green, Bill Pohlad and Dede Gardner.
Correction: Sound re-recording mixer Andy Nelson, who received his thirteen nomination for best achievement in sound for Steven Spielberg's War Horse, is in fact British. In 2001, Nelson received an Australian Centenary Medal for his services to Australian film production for his work on Moulin Rouge.

Its that time of the year again in when everyone prepares their Oscar predictions, because let’s be honest for a moment – the best part of the Oscars is placing your bets on who’ll win and hopefully walking away from a long and usually boring ceremony with some extra cash in your pocket. This morning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards with no major surprises but instead, a long list of snubs. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is the surprise leader of the 2012 Academy Award nominations with 11 nods, including Best Picture and Best Director. The Artist followed with 10 nominations. Here are my predictions of who I feel will take home gold come Sunday February 26, as well as those films and talent who I believe were snubbed.

HollywoodNews.com: Best Picture nominees: The Artist, The Help, The Descendants, War Horse, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, Tree of Life, Hugo, and the big surprise–Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially announced the nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards, and I'm happy with the outcome. The one compliant I have is that Michael Shannon wasn't nominated for Best Actor for his role in Take Shelter. In my opinion that was the best performance I've seen all year. Andy Serkis also didn't get his nomination for playing Ceaser in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Hugo led the pack with 11 solid nominations, followed by The Artist with 10. Both Moneyball and War Horse nabbed six, and The Descendants and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ended up with five, but Fincher got snubbed for Best Director.

Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence. Brace yourselves for the surprises and omissions. The nominees were a little more than crazy this year to say the least – nine best picture nominees! This year’s balloting rules allowed for the possibility of between five and ten Best Picture nominees, and for the first time in Academy history, nine films have been nominated in that category.
Now for the shockers. No Michael Fassbender in the Best Actor category…no Albert Brooks in Best Supporting Actor category…no Adventures Of Tintin or Cars 2 in the Animated category! Terrence Malick and The Tree Of Life both saw some love with 2 nods this morning. How grand that Rooney Mara, Demián Bichir, Jonah Hill, and Nick Nolte are coming to the big party this year!

Announced live just minutes ago from the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverley Hills, the nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards are in.
In the end there were 9 Best Picture nominees and they are; The Artist, Moneyball, War Horse, The Help, Midnight in Paris, The Descendants, Hugo and two major surprises, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life (Malick was also nominated for Best Director) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The latter just came out of nowhere.
Unfortunately and criminally, no Tinker Tailor Solider Spy for Best Picture. There was a Best Actor nomination for Gary Oldman which is well received but 10 nominees and Tinker Tailor wasn’t one of them.
The full list of nominees are in and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo leads the way with 11 nominations…

hollywoodnews.com: And then there were nine.
That’s how many films will compete for the Best Picture Oscar at the 84th Academy Awards. “Winter’s Bone” Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Academy President Tom Sherak announced the nominees this morning, bringing to a close the lengthy first leg of the Oscar marathon (while simultaneously setting up Phase Two for the lucky nominees).
What made the cut? We have a full list of nominees below, but at first glance, Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” led the pack with 11 nominations. Albert Brooks seems like the most egregious snub. And Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is the Best Picture nom that’s making most people angry. (Except for me, because I loved it.)

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?
Here's the full press release with all of the nominations:

We're still a year away from "The Hunger Games," but you can get your first look at Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen today.
Entertainment Weekly has released the first official picture of Lawrence in character as Katniss for the Gary Ross-directed adaptation. In an interview, the Oscar-nominated actress tells EW why she sympathizes with the bow-wielding heroine: "She was a girl who’s all of a sudden being introduced to fame. I know what that feels like to have all this flurry around you and feel like, 'Oh, no, I don't belong here.'"

Berg and Kitsch Reunite
Deadline reports that "Battleship" collaborators Peter Berg and Taylor Kitsch are teaming up again for another project, this time a bit more grounded in reality but still keeping with the armed forces theme.

Right now Hollywood is inundated with tons of zombie centric films like the adaptation of World War Z, the zombie romance Warm Bodies, an epic battle of Zombies vs Robots and a popular spec script called Maggie which Timur Bekmambetov picked up. There are even more than those projects in development with zombie fueled stories, so I'm getting a little tired of the undead. But when Screen Daily reports Ian McKellen and Judi Dench are going to star in an 18th century zombie comedy called The Curse of Buxom Strumpet, I'm inclined to listen. Gillian Anderson and Mark Williams are also set to star in the film. The film is actually an extension of this short film called E'gad Zombies: Matthew Butler directed the short and will direct the feature length version of the film which follows follows a struggling poet, William Filthe, in love with an unattainable woman, Vanity...

This past weekend, 15,000 enthusiastic music fans descended upon the majestic hills of Marvin’s Mountaintop in Masontown, West Virginia for the 14th annual All Good Music Festival. They were treated to over 40 hours of music ranging from rock to reggae. For many, traveling thousands of miles to take part in this experience is the highlight of their summer and a yearly tradition. It's a perfect combination of great music, beautiful scenery, crisp mountain air and a friendly, laid back vibe.
The crowd got warmed up on the first night with Dark Star Orchestra, a Grateful Dead tribute band who set the scene for the weekend ahead with positive vibes and killer jams. Friday's (July 9) lineup also included festival favorites such as Umphrey's McGee, Tea Leaf Green and Femi Kuti. As the sun set, the crowd expanded and was ready to rock with featured band, Furthur (which includes...

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's...

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued invitations to 134 members of the film community to join the group. There were a maximum of 166 open slots to fill this year, but the various branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them.
Hugh Jackman, who hosted the most recent Oscar show, has been invited to join. So have Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, James Franco and Michelle Williams. The list even includes a number of comic performers like Michael Cera, Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd.
Voting membership in the organization has held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception at the Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills in September.

A while back Michael Bay promised that Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen would be bigger, stronger and faster than the first installment. A big claim, considering that Transformers was a visual effects marvel. But, as Michael Bay personally claims, he is awesome (watch commercial below) and he expects the same from his visual effects team.
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen Pushing VFX Envelope
According to vfx companies Digital Domain and Ilm, Michael Bay is expecting a lot in terms of groundbreaking visuals this time around.
"He's brilliant, but he's a challenge," says Matthew Butler, Digital Domain's vfx supervisor on the film. Not only is Bay demanding, as top directors generally are, but "he's incredibly fast-paced. He's a whirlwind to keep up with, both on the set and in post."...

It's pretty much a given that any film by Michael Bay is going to be Big. Big ideas, big concepts, big spectacle...and most definitely big special effects. That will go double for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which employed the talents of not one, but two, top-tier VFX houses, Ilm and Digital Domain.
To hammer home the point, a new article in Variety discusses how the 'event' director is demanding things be "awesome" for Revenge of the Fallen.
Here's a few excerpts:

"Michael took the production value up many, many notches," adds Scott Farrar, lead VFX supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic. "Just the backgrounds alone are huge.
