Jeff Daniels feared 'Dumb and Dumber' would "end" his career. The 69-year-old actor played the hapless Harry opposite Jim Carrey as his pal Lloyd in the 1994 hit comedy, and he's told how he had reservations about the film's notorious toilet scene, in which his alter ego has digestive problems and ended up using a loo that didn't flush properly. He told USA Today newspaper: “It’s one thing to read the toilet scene, but then the day comes and we’re actually going to do the toilet scene.“I told Jim, ‘This is either the beginning of my career or the end of it.'” Jim, who is fearless, told me, ‘It’s going to be great. You’ve just got to go all the way with it.'”Jim's pep talk inspired his co-star to give his all with the scene. He said: “That was a couple hours of porcelain gymnastics.

Jeff Daniels is looking back at his time filming the infamous toilet scene in Dumb and Dumber and how he feared it would end his acting career.
The actor, known for several of his more dramatic roles, recently told USA Today that even his agents warned him about taking on the role of Harry, the “dumber” of two friends, alongside Jim Carrey’s Lloyd in the 1994 comedy.
“I had agents, who weren’t wrong, telling me, ‘You’re a serious actor. This is not the direction you need to be going. We’re going to stop this and get you off this movie,'” Daniels recalled. “But I wanted to shake it up with a comedy. And I wanted to work with Jim Carrey.”

"Rocky" is one of the most beloved sports movies of all time. One could probably even stretch beyond to say that it's plainly and simply one of the most beloved American movies ever made. Now, the movie is getting the "making of" treatment in a new film titled "I Play Rocky." The project has lined up a slightly unexpected director in the form of Peter Farrelly, known best for his work on screwball comedies such as "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb & Dumber."
According to Variety, Farrelly is set to direct. What's more, casting is already underway for the lead role. Sylvester Stallone, who played Rocky Balboa in the original and its many sequels, is not specifically named as the inspiration for this lead role. However, it's crystal clear this movie is about the actor and his journey to get the cinematic classic made. The logline for the film...

Bobby Farrelly’s sports comedy film “Champions” is among the Ruderman Family Foundation’s Seal of Authentic Representation awardees — an award that recognizes productions that practice inclusion and portray authentic representations of people with disabilities in the entertainment industry.
Applauded for its decision to open auditions to actors with disabilities, “Champions” is among five productions receiving the award in a list of honorees that includes ABC drama series “The Company You Keep,” Momentum Pictures’ comedy-drama film “Wildflower,” Netflix drama miniseries “All the Light We Cannot See” and Netflix fantasy miniseries “The Witcher: Blood Origin.”
For a production to be awarded the seal, it must meet two criteria: feature actors with disabilities with at least five lines of dialogue in a speaking role and be in or on the verge of general release. Ricky Stanicky (2024) is Peter Farrelly’s latest comedy and second consecutive movie with a Zac Efron-led cast. Farrelly also cast Efron in his 2022 biographical war comedy-drama The Greatest Beer Run Ever alongside Russell Crowe. In Ricky Stanicky, Peter Farrelly works with an exceptionally odd, eclectic cast. Together with his brother, Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly conquered the comedy genre in the late 90s to mid-2010s. With a few solo projects to his name, Ricky Stanicky follows three childhood friends who create an imaginary friend (Ricky Stanicky) to blame for their mischievous acts. Even as adults, they continue to use Ricky...

Comedy feels like it's in a delicate state these days. Not only are studios avoiding tentpole comedy movies for the most part, but the onslaught of what many perceive as "cancel culture" has resulted in a little more caution when it comes to telling jokes, whether that's on the big screen or in comedy clubs. While there has been a lot of admirable progress with regards to cultural issues in comedy, the argument could be made that there is such a thing as being too sensitive, especially when it comes to an art form that is well-known for mining laughter from irreverence and provocation.
This careful approach to comedy has resulted in a lot of retrospective analysis of comedies from yesteryear, much of which often results in people saying, "You could never make that movie today." This has been applied to everything from "Blazing Saddles" (typically from people who don't...

After a bit of a career detour to win a couple Oscars, filmmaker Peter Farrelly is back with his first full-fledged comedy in a decade: Ricky Stanicky, starring Zac Efron and John Cena.
Now available to stream on Prime Video, the Amazon comedy follows Dean (Efron) and two lifelong friends (Jermaine Fowler and Andrew Santino) who invent an imaginary pal named Ricky Stanicky to blame for their various hijinks. When their romantic partners finally want to meet him, the buddies hire a struggling actor known as “Rock Hard” Rod (Cena) to become Ricky.
Ricky Stanicky returns Farrelly to the ribald comedy genre, which he and brother Bobby Farrelly became synonymous with in the 1990s, thanks to hits like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary. Their most recent co-directing effort was 2014’s sequel, Dumb and Dumber To. Peter Farrelly has stayed busy as a solo director, helming 2018’s Green Book,...

The international endurance of Spanish film adaptations was front and center this year at the Malaga Festival Industry Zone’s (Mafiz) Remake Day event on Thursday, with a presentation of Shanghai-based Aim Media’s “Lose to Win,” the Chinese adaptation of the Latido Films-sold 2018 hit “Campeones” (“Champions”), directed by Javier Fesser.
“Champions” is produced by Luis Manso at Fesser’s Madrid-based Películas Pendleton (“Historias Lamentables”) alongside Alvaro Longoria at Spain’s Morena Films (“Everybody Knows”).
Global remakes of “Champions,” about a basketball coach who coaches a team of people with disabilities as community service, have so far included Arabic, German, U.S. (starring Woody Harrelson and directed by Bobby Farrelly) and Indian versions, not to mention a hugely successful Spanish sequel.
Discussing “Lose to Win,” directed by Gao Hu, ahead of a special screening of the film, Aim Media’s Emily Ruan detailed the benefits and challenges presented by the production.

In the early 90s, Peter Farrelly was one of the biggest filmmakers in comedy cinema, alongside his brother and collaborator, Bobby Farrelly. The duo brought classics like Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, and Shallow Hal to the big screen. However, in the late 2000s, Bobby took a step away from Hollywood for personal reasons, and Peter ventured into drama, winning two Oscars for his movie, Green Book. In 2024, Peter will return to the comedy world with Ricky Stanicky. With superstars Zac Efron and John Cena leading the movie, it’s shaping up to be a return to comedic...

Peter Farrelly made his name in Hollywood by directing raunchy comedies such as "Dumb and Dumber" and "There's Something About Mary" alongside his brother, Bobby Farrelly. Since going solo, however, Peter Farrelly has been making more serious fare such as the Oscar-winning "Green Book." But now, he's back with an R-rated comedy in the form of "Ricky Stanicky." With an A-list cast and a ridiculous premise, it looks like a throwback in every conceivable way. Check out the trailer above for yourself.
Here, Farrelly is re-teaming with Zac Efron, who worked with him on "The Greatest Beer Run Ever." While Efron is coming off of the most serious performance of his career in "The Iron Claw," this sees him going back to his comedic roots, having previously starred in films like "Neighbors" and "Dirty Grandpa." Meanwhile, John Cena is getting to flex his comedic chops as well as the titular character.

Eva Longoria has been selected to receive the Ruderman Family Foundation’s annual honor recognizing prominent cultural figures who do advocacy work on behalf of the disabled.
Longoria founded the organization Eva’s Heroes in 2006 to help those with intellectual disabilities. The cause is personal to Longoria, whose older sister Liza was born with an intellectual disability. In 2012, Longoria also established the Eva Longoria Foundation to help advocate for Latino women through education and entrepreneurship.
“I’m so honored to be recognized as the recipient of this year’s Morton E. Ruderman Award. My older sister Liza was born with an intellectual disability, so my mom instilled in all of us early on the importance of giving back to our community, which is why I founded Eva’s Hereos to provide a platform to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities around the country,” said Longoria.

In a previous piece for Gold Derby, I referenced how all but one Best Picture Oscar winner since 2008 came from filmmakers who had never directed a Best Picture nominee before. The only exception is Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s “Birdman” in 2014; his prior Best Picture bid was for “Babel” back in 2006. Let’s dig into the last 15 years of winners, shall we?
SEEOscars alert: Watch out for ‘Barbie’ scene-stealers America Ferrera and Rhea Perlman
In 2008 “Slumdog Millionaire” was the juggernaut of the film awards season, winning eight Oscars, which is still more than any film since then. It was directed by Danny Boyle, who at the time only made one other Oscar nominated film, 1996’s “Trainspotting,” which was recognized with a nom for Best Adapted Screenplay.
In 2009 the race famously came down to two films from directors who were previously married: James Cameron‘s “Avatar” and Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Hurt Locker.

For a generation of moviegoers, the Farrelly Brothers name means something. Specifically, it means a very pointed combination of gross-out comedy and emotional sentiment — films that are more than happy to dabble in literal excrement and ask you honestly shed a little tear over the characters embarking on some kind of emotional journey. The headlines and the buzz are always about the nastiest gags and grossest moments (she puts what in her hair?), but audiences often who showed up hoping to be appalled often found themselves lulled into something weirdly gentle and sweet. Sometimes, the combination doesn't work at all and the result is an unpleasant, tonal disaster. But when it does work? Well, that's when you get something that feels very specific to Peter and Bobby Farrelly, two of the most memorably mainstream, lowbrow auteurs to emerge from the '90s.

Dumb and Dumber is probably Jim Carrey’s funniest film. While The Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind might be better all-around movies, in terms of his comedies, nothing quite beats Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s debut. While Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask arguably made more of an impact on pop culture, both of those films are dated in ways that this isn’t. Jim Carrey is sensational as Lloyd Christmas, a love-struck limo driver pursuing the object of his affections, Lauren Holly’s Mary Swanson, to Aspen.
As hilarious as he is, he’s matched by Jeff Daniels, who plays his best pal, Harry, who accompanies him on his trip in their iconic Mutt Cutts van. The road comedy is scored with a classic alt-rock nineties soundtrack, and some of the rude jokes, which include love-lorn truck drivers, headless parakeets...

Champions is a comedy movie directed by Bobby Farrelly starring Woody Harrelson and Ernie Hudson.
Remake of the Spanish film Campeones. No one dared to trash the Spanish film, but this one has been given its due by specialized critics.
Sometimes you have to judge cinema as cinema, and sometimes even film critics get it right.
Sentimental and trite.
Movie Review
Is it better than the Spanish version? Of course, Hollywood exhibits all its industry muscle, and what was a European production in the Hispanic film – with its own merit but lacking on a production level, here the industry exhibits its potential and gives a quick polish to everything: the editing, the sound, and puts a star, Woody Harrelson, in the spotlight.
It takes everything from the Spanish film, except for the great campaign that was made to judge a film not by its cinematic content but by its more social side.

For singer and songwriter Michael Franti, the road to “Champions” began with a text message during the pandemic. Franti and his long-time friend Woody Harrelson had talked of making a movie together, but the timing never worked. Once Covid hit, the musician found himself with a lot of time on his hands. “I had nothing to do except sit around and watch reels from the movie,” he tells Variety.
In “Champions,” directed by Bobby Farrelly, Harrelson plays Marcus Marokovich, an assistant coach for a minor league basketball team in Iowa. After a DUI, he accepts a community service assignment managing players with intellectual disabilities. Working with his athletes over the course of his 90 days, they gradually break down his grumpy exterior and help reveal his empathetic side.
When Franti watched reels from the film, he “was really touched by it. And I just feel like the world, as crazy as it is right now,...

Back when Peter and Bobby Farrelly were still making movies as a team, Jack Black starred for them in one of their big comedy hits, Shallow Hal. He's now set to reunite with the sibling duo for new Christmas film Dear Santa.
The Farrellys are also back together for this one — though Bobby is actually directing, while Peter produces and co-writing the script with his brother and Ricky Blitt.
Dear Santa, which sprung from an original idea from Dan Ewen, focuses on a young boy, who in writing his yearly note to Santa, mixes up the letters and sends it to Satan instead.
This is one that has been on the Farrellys' radar for more than a decade now, originally set up at 20th Century Fox as Dear Satan, but now squatting at Paramount.
The cast also includes Robert Timothy Smith, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, Pj Byrne, Jaden Carson Baker,...

The True Detective reunion is happening, but it won’t be filled with gruesome murders this time around. It’s been reported that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are set to reunite for a new comedy series for Apple TV+.
The untitled half-hour comedy series is being developed by David West Read (The Big Door Prize) and will find the Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson playing fictional versions of themselves. Millions tuned into Hollywood's biggest night on Sunday as the Oscars took place, while many others were enjoying SXSW in Austin, Texas. This to say, it was a big weekend for movie lovers, and those who weren't occupied with either of the aforementioned events seemingly saw one of two movies: the newly released "Scream VI" or the previous weekend's box office champion "Creed III." Both movies did stellar business over the weekend, but the latest sequel in the ongoing saga of Ghostface truly slayed, setting a new high bar for the franchise nearly 30 years after Wes Craven's original revived the slasher genre.
Per Box Office Mojo, "Scream VI" earned $44.5 million, decimating the record that was previously held by "Scream 3" ($34.7 million). Meanwhile, internationally, the sequel carved up another $22.6 million, giving it a global launch of $67.1 million. That easily sets it up to at least match the gross of 2022's...

Oscar weekend belonged to “Scream VI” in theaters, as the horror sequel notched a franchise-best $44.5 million in domestic ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group co-production sailed past expectations, easily surpassing the previous series high of $32 million that “Scream 2” opened with in 1997. The film’s robust debut, coming as Hollywood prepared to gather for the 95th Academy Awards, was yet another reminder of how horror has come to be one of the industry’s few sure things at the box office.
After lying dormant for more than a decade, the “Scream” franchise, previously directed by Wes Craven and released by Dimension Films, has found a ripe revival with a young cast led by “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera.

The box office saw another strong weekend, though this also being Oscar weekend and this being written on Sunday morning, we’re probably going to see a few minor adjustments on Monday when actual box office is reported.
Regardless, Paramount’s sequel, “Scream VI,” became the second franchise sequel in a row to exceed the opening of all previous installments. It came into the weekend with solid reviews of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it brought in more than $5.7 million just in Thursday previews. It won Friday with ease with an estimated $19.3 million, and that added up to an estimated $44.5 million for its opening weekend. That is indeed the best opening for the franchise, the previous record being 2000’s “Scream 3,” which opened with $34.7 million.

“Scream VI” (Paramount) opened to a surprisingly high gross of $44.5 million this weekend. That’s 48 percent bigger than 2022’s initial franchise reboot, which took in $30 million its initial weekend.
This comes on top of the debut of “Creed III” (MGM) last weekend ($58 million), which went way beyond expectations and similarly showed improvement over its previous series sequel. All this is additional positive news in a month that still has two promising titles — “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros. Discovery) and especially “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) — still to come.
The uptick for “Scream” is impressive, particularly since its January 2022 predecessor opened against far less competition and on a holiday weekend. Paramount, as is now its custom, provided box office on a budget (the estimated production cost is $33 million), and sold it despite the longevity of the series as something original. They again exceeded expectations.

Franchises seem to be having a moment right now. Last week we saw Creed III open with a series best $58.3 million and this week we are seeing the Scream series have its best opening ever as Scream VI over-performed to the tune of $44.5 million. That is a a healthy $9.8 million over previous series champ Scream 3’s $34.7 million opening back in February of 2000 and $14.49 million over the previous films $30.01 million opening just last year.

“Scream VI” collected $44.5 million in its opening weekend, a scary-good start for Paramount and Spyglass Media’s long-running slasher series.
Those ticket sales were enough to top domestic box office charts over two newcomers, Sony’s prehistoric sci-fi thriller “65” and the Focus Features heartwarming comedy “Champions,” as well as last weekend’s victor “Creed III.”
The initial haul for “Scream VI” is frighteningly strong for the sixth installment in a franchise. Not only did it greatly improve upon the start of last year’s hit reboot “Scream,” which scored with $30 million, but it crushed the series’ opening weekend record, previously set by 2000’s “Scream 3” with $34 million. “Scream VI” cost $35 million, so it’ll easily turn a profit in its theatrical run.
“It’s extraordinary to have this type of result after six films,” says Chris Aronson, Paramount’s president of domestic distribution. “We blew away the opening of the last ‘Scream.

Bobby Farrelly’s redemptive crowdpleaser casts Harrelson as an irascible minor league basketball coach tasked with training a team with learning disabilities
The Farrelly brothers, Peter and Bobby, made their name with blunt slapstick comedies such as There’s Something About Mary, Me Myself & Irene and Shallow Hal – films with a gross-out edge that tended to delight audiences while dividing critics. Peter struck awards gold with Green Book, a bland period road movie that became the Driving Miss Daisy of its time when it won the Oscar for best picture in 2019. Now Bobby makes his solo feature directorial debut with this very likable sports comedy – a remake of the 2018 Spanish film Campeones (inspired by the real-life story of the Aderes basketball team in Burjassot) that delivers belly laughs and heartfelt charm in equal measure.

Numbers have begun rolling in for this weekend’s slate of movies and Scream VI is looking to nab a franchise best opening weekend currently projected at $43.5 million after notching a solid start of $5.7 million on Thursday. That preview number is actually higher than last week’s Creed III which ended up opening to over $58 million. Of course horror films tend to be more front loaded and with spoilers rampant on the internet, the hard core fans probably wanted to see the movie as soon as possible so that nothing was ruined for them.
Last years Scream 5, or Scream as it was officially called, opened with $3.5 million in previews on its way to a $30.01 million opening while 2000’s Scream 3 currently holds the franchise record opening with $34.7 million. All eyes will be on Saturday’s numbers to see if this one is trending in the right direction. Reviews have been pretty strong,...

Do you like scary movies? The rest of the box office does.
“Scream VI,” a Paramount and Spyglass co-production, looks to spook off “Creed III” for the top slot at the domestic box office. The self-branded slasher “requel” grossed $19.3 million from 3,675 locations on its opening day, a figure that includes $5.7 million in previews. That’s more than enough to fend off the weekend’s other new releases, Sony’s science-fiction dinosaur thriller “65” and Focus Features’ sports comedy “Champions.”
“Scream VI” is already a few steps ahead of its 2022 predecessor, which landed a $13 million opening day. In fact, the “Scream” series is proving to be bigger than ever. Should projections hold, the sixth entry will score a franchise record opening weekend of $43.5 million, a good deal higher than the $32 million that “Scream 2” earned in its 1997 bow.
After last year’s entry grossed $137 million worldwide against a measured $24 million production budget,...

Matthew Von Der Ahe stars in “Champions,” Bobby Farrelly’s refreshingly unsentimental, hilarious and rather gritty remake of the 2018 Spanish hit “Campeones.” The story follows a disgraced minor league basketball coach (Woody Harrelson) who, after a DUI, is sentenced by a judge to coach a local Special Olympics basketball team, the Friends. Von Der Ahe, who has Down syndrome, plays the saucy Craig, who loves the game, his teammates and the ladies, and stars with Kaitlin Olson, Cheech Marin and a large cast of actors with intellectual and developmental disabilities [Idd]. Von Der Ahe has been acting since he was 7, and his credits include “Code Black,” “Weeds” and “Yo Gabba Gabba.” He’s also a state ambassador for Idd advocacy and volunteer organization Best Buddies, works at a restaurant called the Village, paints watercolor art, takes drum lessons and works out with a personal trainer, “who pushes me to do my best.

Chicago – “Champions” is a predictable and formulaic, but it’s ultimately a good natured trip into a world of sports comedy clichés. It’s never particularly laugh out loud funny, but its heart is in the right place, which makes it hard to root against the film.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Woody Harrelson is Marcus, a minor league assistant basketball coach who lost his shot at the big time and is now toiling in Des Moines, Iowa. After an altercation with his head coach, and a drunk driving arrest he’s fired from the team and ordered to do community service by coaching a rec center team full of players with intellectual disabilities played by real actors with intellectual disabilities, some of whom are part of the well regarded national “Best Buddies” program.
“Champions” opens everywhere on March 10th. Featuring Woody Harrelson, Kaitlin Olsen, Ernie Hudson, Kevin Iannucci and Cheech Marin. Screenplay adapted by Mark Rizzo.
