The great city of Liverpool has been well served by the sitcom industry over the years. The Liver Birds, Boys from the Blackstuff, Bread, The Royle Family. These are all highly successful and highly watchable, if occasionally mordant. They all fell into a bit of a pattern – a recipe of sorts, like Scouse itself (originally a stew of course) – with similar essential ingredients: wit, irreverence, strong women carrying weak men, a family theme, and a certain sassy style.
ITV’s latest stab at sitcom success, The Family Pile, falls uneasily into this line of succession. In this case, the mixture is: four sisters recently bereaved; three husbands-slash partners; three kids; one affair between a sister and another sister’s hubby; and one very large house. With the recent death of the siblings’ mum, following closely on from that of their dad, eldest sister Nicole (Amanda Abbington) sneakily puts their childhood home on the market,...

A bit of cello practice, a watcher in the woods, a dusty room that’s been locked for years: there’s a lot of interesting events happening in this episode of Requiem. But before we get into that, let’s sing the praises of an element that can often get overlooked: an excellent title sequence.
The swirling, kaleidoscopic patterns and effects combined with high-pitched, eerie music reminds me of other series of the past that knew how to build up the suspense and fantastical elements from the start: Tales of the Unexpected, for instance, or The Box of Delights, both of...

While class separates the women upstairs from the women downstairs at Downton Abbey, and this class difference intersects with gender in various ways, they ultimately do share a common gender. Such is the uniting potential of shared social and political disadvantage that often it breaks through the other barriers between people. The first two seasons of Downton Abbey span the 1910s and it should be interesting to see how the 1920s affect the women of Downton Abbey in the third season.
Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan): Mrs. Hughes more than any other character is a steadying force downstairs. This means she is often involved in the plots of others. The main time she is the center of a plot is when she briefly rekindles a relationship with a man from her past and has to decide if she will pick work or love, a choice she had faced years earlier.
