There's meeting your favorite celebrity, and then there's meeting Spock. Though we all understand on some level that actors Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, and Ethan Peck aren't actually the beloved pointy-eared first officer "Star Trek" fans know and love, well, humans aren't really that logical, are we?
"Star Trek" has a long history of inspiring passionate fan reactions, and Peck, who plays the half-Vulcan, half-human fan-favorite character in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is certainly getting a taste of them. In a cover story for Variety about the future of the Paramount-owned franchise, Peck spoke about what it's been like adjusting to playing Spock and described fan encounters as a sort of ritualistic experience. "When I'm meeting fans, sometimes they're coming to be confirmed, like I'm kind of a priest," the actor told a reporter while in the middle of filming season 3 of the excellent Paramount+ prequel series.

Apple TV+ has unveiled the trailer for the second season of ‘The Big Door Prize,’ the critically acclaimed and character-driven comedy from Emmy Award-winning creator David West Read (“Schitt’s Creek”).
Based on M.O. Walsh’s novel, season two follows the residents of Deerfield as the Morpho machine readies them for the mysterious “next stage.” As everyone’s potentials are exchanged for visions, new relationships form and new questions are asked.
Dusty (Chris O’Dowd) and Cass (Gabrielle Dennis) decide to take time apart while Trina (Djouliet Amara) and Jacob (Sammy Fourlas) learn that they can shed their old labels. Giorgio (Josh Segarra) and Izzy (Crystal Fox) each find romance while Hana (Ally Maki) and Father Reuben (Damon Gupton) attempt to discover the purpose of the machine. The small town is once again left questioning what they thought they knew about their lives, relationships, potentials and about the Morpho itself.

The fifth episode of the second season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" was called "Charades," and featured a plot that would be at home in a modern-day farce. Spock (Ethan Speck) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), while on a shuttlecraft mission together, were grievously injured in an accident. Fortunately, a species of non-corporeal aliens happened to be nearby, and their medical technology allowed them to handily repair any damage done to Spock and Chapel. Unfortunately, the aliens didn't quite understand why Spock had both human and Vulcan DNA, so they reconstructed him using Nurse Chapel as a model, transforming Spock into a full-blooded human.
The episode that follows is a comedy about Spock's newfound loss of control. As a human, he smiles more easily, is quick to anger, admits to having a supercharged libido (they compare his transformation to puberty), and is terrified that his future in-laws might find out.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," currently wrapping up its second ten-episode season, has stood apart from the many other "Star Trek" shows by possessing a much lighter, more genial tone than its immediate predecessors. Since 2009, "Star Trek" has been largely dour, violent, and dark. Some of the more recent episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Picard" have contained many, many murders, and the Kelvin-verse movies have been hyperactive action pictures (one of them is even called "Star Trek Into Darkness"). It's telling that the better Trek shows of more recent vintage have been more or less comedy shows. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is a 30-minute animated "Star Trek" sitcom, while "Strange New Worlds" is lighter -- literally; the set is more brightly lit -- and features stories that verge on the silly. In "The Elysian Kingdom," the characters are all magically transformed into Ren Faire characters. In "Charades,...

With the coronavirus pandemic causing TIFF to go online and reduce their line-up, this year’s Short Cuts programme has been whittled down to 35 films across 5 programmes, a reduction of more than a third compared to last year’s 55 films and 8 programmes. Despite these limitations, programmers Jason Anderson and Lisa Haller have put together a strong lineup for 2020 that should hold more than a few surprises for those willing to check out this year’s lineup.
Having seen most of what this year has to offer, here are 10 films that stand out in a slim but competitive field of short filmmaking. For more coverage from the festival, check out our preview of the most-anticipated features and read our forthcoming reviews here.

Grief is a strange, personal, and often entirely unexpected reponse to tragedy. It will differ depending on who you are, the point in life you’re at, the cause, and myriad details spanning scenario, age, love, hate, or surprise. To cope with a grandparent’s death for example is something we all know is coming. We prepare ourselves for the inevitability and therefore find ourselves able to push through the pain with little to no trouble—depending on your relationship, of course. Conversely, the passing of someone still blessed with youth proves a gut-punch not easily shaken. Whether accident or disease or stupidity, the senselessness stemming from a shortened life scars. And when it’s impossible to wrap your head around the why, it’s generally just as difficult to move on.
We like to believe we can get through it by adopting a hardened façade or selective memory. Some...

A buddy-comedy wrapped in a British Columbia road trip, Suck It Up figures out how to find the humor in emotionally distressing situations that might elude any less determined characters than the film’s two protagonists. Gently amusing while avoiding needless sentimentality, Jordan Canning’s deft feature could find a limited following on the art house circuit or any number of streaming services.
Still distraught over the recent death of her beloved brother Garrett from cancer, Ronnie (Grace Glowicki) goes on an epic bender, leading to a random lawnmower accident that nearly puts her in the hospital. Following a call from Ronnie’s...

Now well into its second decade, the Slamdance Film Festival is gearing up for its 2017 edition. Mostly taking place at the Treasure Mountain Inn at top of Park City, Utah’s busting Main Street, Slamdance is dedicated to presenting a festival and a community designed “for filmmakers by filmmakers.”
In previous years, projects from directors like Christopher Nolan, Marc Forster, Jared Hess, Oren Peli, Benh Zeitlin, Seth Gordon, Lynn Shelton and Lena Dunham have bowed at the festival, and it’s become a fertile — if offbeat — proving ground for fresh talents. This year looks to be yet another banner one for the fest, and as such, we’ve gone on a little trip through the Slamdance slate to dig up some prime possibilities for must-see films (shorts and features!).

Invermere, British Columbia is three hours and change from Calgary, and it might not be the first place on your list to go if you’re attached to city living. But if you need somewhere to shake off the past and prepare for the future, then it might hold the key to sorting things out.
In Canadian director Jordan Canning‘s (“We Were Wolves“) newest film “Suck It Up,” she tracks the journey of two best friends, Ronnie (Grace Glowicki) and Faye (Erin Carter), who take a debaucherous journey into the mountains to cope with the loss of the man they both loved — Ronnie’s brother.

Ronnie just lost her brother. Faye just lost the love of her life. What better way to mourn than by going on an epic road trip filled with drinking, debauchery, bad decisions and big revelations?
In Jordan Canning’s “Suck It Up,” life-long BFFs Ronnie (Grace Glowicki) and Faye (Erin Carter) are both attempting to get through huge heartbreaks with mixed results. Eventually, they land on the smart/stupid idea to take off for a summer away in beautiful British Columbia, where their dual sadness and a whole lot of wildness might, just might, make them feel better. Except, well, it probably won’t.

Eight women directors from across Canada have been selected to attend the 20th annual session of Women In the Director’s Chair (Widc), which includes the pilot program, Widc Story & Leadership. Over the coming months this top-notch group of content creators will develop their feature films and web series, working with an ensemble of hand-picked professional actors, technicians and other industry experts. A major component of the program takes the form of an Industry Immersion at the 15th anniversary Whistler Film Festival (December 2-6), and culminates with a three-month mentorship tailored to advance each director’s project.
Mounting their sophomore feature films are East coast favorites, Mary Walsh ("A Christmas Fury," based on the characters from the riotously-funny TV series "Hatching, Matching and Dispatching"), Anita Reilly McGee ("Black Mammy"), and Widc Feature Film Award-winner, Jordan Canning ("Suck It Up"). Weaving fiction into their prolific body of documentary works from Ontario are, Maya Gallus ("Nights in the Underground"), and Frances-Anne Solomon ("Hero"). Also from Ontario is Nicole Dorsey , developing a debut feature "Black Conflux," along with BC-based actress Ana De Lara ("The Virgin Mary Had a Little Lamb"). Multiple award-winner Marie Clements is developing a new interactive web series "Crooked Bones," based on the true story of First Nations artist, Connie Watts.
"Widc understands that being committed to bringing women’s voices to the screen means investing in the storyteller. Not simply as a “one off” but as a continued partnership between stakeholders who recognize that the development of skill, process, and creation has lasting and profound value,” states Metis actor/ writer/director, Marie Clements. “I am honored to be in this year’s Story & Leadership Program with some of Canada’s most talented and innovative filmmakers."
Award-winning director Rachel Talalay ("Dr. Who," "Tank Girl") will be one of this year’s key mentors focusing on directing action. This year’s line up also includes peer mentors, award-winning Widc alumnae, writer/directors Siobhan Devine ("The Birdwatcher," which premieres at the Whistler Film Festival), and web series creator Karen Lam ("Mythos"), along with popular Widc instructors, writer and Jungian expert, Dr. Carolyn Mamchur , and screen-writer / story consultant Linda Coffey ("These Arms of Mine"). Industry guests include, John Galway (Harold Greenberg Fund), Maureen Levitt , (Super Channel), independent producer, Lael McCall , (Principia Productions), and Telefilm Canada’s Lauren Davis .
“Taking part in this Widc workshop makes me excited about the possibility of someday having television and film represent the perspectives of women, “ states Mary Walsh, a recipient of the Order of Canada and the Governor General’s Lifetime Achievement Award in the Performing Arts. “Although women make up 51% of the Canadian population, they comprise less than 20% of the directors and screenwriters working in Canadian Film.”
The Women In the Director’s Chair (Widc) program has earned an international reputation for propelling over two hundred Canadian women directors’ skills, stories and careers to the next level of excellence. Creative Women Workshops Association, The Banff Centre and Actra (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) have been Widc collaborators, and Telefilm Canada has been a major sponsor since the program’s 1997 inception. Widc and the Whistler Film Festival collaborate again through the Widc Wff Industry Immersion.
The Festival’s online box office is now open for Industry Passes, Festival Passes and Ticket Packages allowing you to select your films in advance and share them with friends and family.
New for 2015 , Wff has introduced a Festival Credential that provides access to the Music Café, ShortWork Showdown and Festival Lodge, and is included in select ticket packages if purchased by October 31.
Air travel and ground transportation deals as well as best accommodation rates starting from $89 per night are now available. The Westin Whistler Resort and Spa is Wff’s official host hotel. Wff has 20 accommodation partners to choose from that offer special rates to Whistler Film Festival attendees. Book your accommodation early to ensure your perfect match and price. Jordan Canning isn't new to the Toronto International Film Festival -- her short film "Seconds" won the fest's Rbc Emerging Filmmakers Competition in 2012. But "We Were Wolves" marks the first time the promising Canadian writer/director took a feature to Tiff.
Shot over the course of two weeks at their cinematographer's family cottage in northern Ontario, the indie drama was a labour of love for the small cast and crew, who found themselves handling multiple jobs, everything from craft services to lugging gear around the isolated island they shot on. Peter Mooney ("Rookie Blue") stars as Nick in the film, a responsible young father trying to settle affairs after his dad's death, when his estranged, slacker older brother Danny (co-writer Steve Cochrane) shows up out of the blue with his own ideas on what to do about their father's cottage. Longstanding grudges and years of resentment bubble up over that weekend,...

The countdown has begun to Whistler’s 14th annual cinematic celebration. The Whistler Film Festival (Wff) returns December 3 to 7, 2014 and with just 16 weeks to go, the Festival is proud to offer a sneak peek at the first round of confirmed films and industry program highlights.
Located in North America’s premiere destination mountain resort, the Whistler Film Festival combines an international film competition with a screen-based industry Summit to address the ever-evolving landscape of the digital age. The Festival hosts filmmaking luminaries for an intimate, five-day program featuring up to 90 original films from Canada and around the world, including filmmaker tributes, special events and industry initiatives. Recognized by filmmakers and film lovers alike as one of Canada’s most important showcases for film, Wff is a place where artists are celebrated, audiences are inspired, new ideas are discussed and business opportunities are solidified.
Wff’s Director of Programming and industry veteran Paul Gratton has this to say about the 2014 lineup: "The Whistler Film Festival continues to be a must-attend event for hip, young film buffs and emerging filmmakers, and we are pleased to carve out our own unique niche by offering an impressive selection of Canadian premieres. This year's titles will cast a wide net in terms of subject matter, and our Summit will complement our film programming by addressing key challenges and opportunities facing the industry this year. Wff will have something for everyone.”
The Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature presented by the Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia celebrates its 11th anniversary this year offering the second largest cash film festival prize for a Canadian film in the country, with additional awards for Best Performance, Best Screenwriting and Best Direction.
Opening the Borsos competition this year will be the World Premiere of Cameron Labine’s BC filmed comedy "Mountain Men" starring Chace Crawford and Tyler Labine as estranged brothers who journey to their family cabin in the middle of winter. When the cabin accidentally burns to the ground, what started as a fun weekend quickly goes from bad to worse. The brothers find themselves fighting for survival as they perilously try to find their way down the mountain, all while rehashing family memories and challenged by sibling rivalry.
The breathtaking scenery of Nova Scotia is showcased in Wff's second Borsos competition film, the Western Premiere of "Relative Happiness" directed by first-time, female feature filmmaker Deanne Foley. Starring Australian actress Melissa Bergland and Wff alumni Aaron Poole, the romantic comedy tells the story of feisty but somewhat oversized bed and breakfast owner Lexie Ivy, who is tasked with finding a date to her sister’s wedding.
Other confirmed films include the World Premiere of the hilarious mockumentary "After Film School," by Vancouver filmmaker Joel Ashton McCarthy, who enlisted the help of over 100 local volunteers and featured original music from local musicians. It asks the question of young filmmakers everywhere, “What happens after film school?” The answer is a movie within a movie: "High School Shootings: The Musical."
"The Cocksure Lads Movie," also having its World Premiere at WFF14, is a fun musical in the style of Cliff Richards about a British boy band that travels to Toronto for a gig, only to split up hours after landing. Directed by Murray Foster, a former member of band Moxy Fruvous, the film features songs written by Murray over a twenty-year period in honor of his love for 1960s Britpop.
Canadian premieres include the comedy thriller "What an Idiot" from Vancouver husband-wife duo Peter and Julia Benson, featuring the story of a man pretending to be gay to get near his hot, new boss at work, and documentary "That Guy Dick Miller," chronicling the life of veteran character actor Dick Miller, which had its World Premiere at South by Southwest this year.
Wff’s World Documentary Competition will include "The Backward Class," the 2014 Audience Award winner at Hot Docs that follows a class of poverty-stricken children from India’s “untouchable class” as they are separated from their families for more than 13 years to receive an education, facing the pressure to succeed while preparing for college entrance exams.
Wff’s Family program we will feature the 24th film in Rock Demers’ Tales for All series,"The Outlaw League," about a group of scruffy kids who want to turn the local junkyard into a baseball diamond. The film broke box office records in New Brunswick and will be a Western Canadian premiere.
Wff’s second From the Vault program will feature three newly discovered long-lost shorts "Cold Comfort, Insomnia is Good for You" and "Dearth of a Salesman" -- from comic legend Peter Sellers, which played 1950s UK theater screens as an addition to the main programming.
Other official selections featuring wilderness settings include the Western Canadian premiere of family drama "We Were Wolves" by director Jordan Canning, about two brothers who reconcile at the family cabin following the death of their father, and "Backcountry" directed by Adam MacDonald and starring Rookie Blue actress Missy Peregrym in a true story about two campers who are viciously attacked by a black bear. The bear attack footage was shot in Squamish, BC.
Western Canadian premiere "I Put a Hit on You" stars Aaron Ashmore and Sara Canning as a separated couple who team up to stop the hit man she accidentally hired to kill him and comes to Wff from the 2014 Slamdance Film Festival. The BC Premiere of dark comedy-thriller "Ally Was Screaming" directed by Jeremy Thomas and starring Camille Sullivan follows a couple of buddies who discover a late friend's winning multi-million dollar lottery ticket and how they deal with what stands in the way of their prize. Both will be featured in Wff’s Discoveries strand.
These films are but a few tantalizing offerings that represent what audiences can expect from this year's exciting lineup. Wff is still seeking submissions for its 14th edition. Canadian and International filmmakers are invited to submit films of all lengths and genres by the extended deadline of September 19.
Wff’s Summit will feature three concentrated days of business programs and networking events where industry-goers can delve into cinema’s converging fields of art, technology and commerce. Offering in-depth conversations, lively debates and critical insight into a broad range of issues vital to the international and domestic film communities while addressing crossing borders and platforms in the digital age, Whistler is the place to be, connect and deal.
Project development programs include Wff’s Feature Project Lab, an intense four-day business and marketplace immersion experience for six Canadian producers, which focuses on strengthening dramatic feature projects from script to screen by facilitating feedback, collaboration and investment in film projects that have Us and international appeal.
Writer-producer teams are invited to submit their feature film story ideas for this year's third consecutive China Canada Gateway for Film® Script Competition, a dynamic pitching competition designed to stimulate international financing for Canadian creators to participate in a China-Canada co-production. The competition will introduce up to 12 experienced writer/producer teams to Chinese studios with production financing on the table for three selected projects.
New for 2014 , the Wff Praxis Screenwriters Lab is an intense five-day workshop presented by the Whistler Film Festival and Praxis Centre for Screenwriters. Designed to advance Canadian creative talent, the Lab focuses on strengthening feature length scripts by facilitating feedback and mentorship from veteran screenwriters and story editors. Up to eight screenwriters will be invited to participate.
Wff’s Aboriginal Filmmaker Fellowship , a creative and business immersion experience designed to advance Canadian Aboriginal creative talent, focuses on strengthening short script projects by facilitating feedback from mentors who are successful and well-respected members of the Canadian film community. Up to four Aboriginal filmmakers from British Columbia will be invited to participate in the 2014 Aboriginal Filmmaker Fellowship with a call for applications opening September 1.
The Mppia Short Film Award, a partnership initiative of Mppia, Creative BC, and the Whistler Film Festival for BC filmmakers , returns for its 8th edition as part of Wff’s ShortWork Lab, providing one filmmaker with the opportunity to develop his/her directing career by realizing a unique creative vision in a short film project. Five short-listed candidates will pitch their projects at the 2014 Festival, and the winning film will have its world premiere at Wff 2015.
Application details and information for all Wff industry and project development programs are available at whistlerfilmfestival.com.

I am a judge for Viewster’s Online Film Festival. It is so great to give money to filmmakers. $100,000.00!!!! This installment was “It’s Complicated” and it takes a global tour through relationships.
The thing I found most striking was the exposure to filmmakers from around the world. Sitting hear in America, I mostly see local work, and you become accustomed to the dominant strain of fast cut, tight story telling. In contrast, these shorts on Viewster had room to breathe, offering nuance, performance, and audience consideration in a way that American films rarely do. I can’t say I loved everyone, but I was glad to watch them. It felt like a guided tour through our creative community. Check them out for yourself and see if you agree with how we voted (which will be revealed on July 7).
The audience voted to determine the top 20 for us to judge.
