Home audiences will cheer for Disney’s Queen of Katwe, which has earned widespread critical acclaim. Based on the vibrant true story of a young girl (Madina Nalwanga) from the streets of Uganda whose world changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. It is a remarkable story of perseverance against all odds that will leave viewers feeling humbled and inspired. According to director Mira Nair, “The triumph of the human spirit is not to weep for what we don’t have but to focus on what we do have and allow that to take us to a place we never imagined possible.” Disney’s heartwarming and triumphant tale arrives home on Digital HD on Jan.

Mira Nair’s (Monsoon Wedding) drama biopic Queen Of Katwe will get its European premiere at the BFI London Film Festival (October 5-October 16) where it will screen on Sunday 9 October at the Odeon Leicester Square in the festival’s headline gala section.
Queen of Katwe is the true story of a young girl who sells corn on the rural streets of Uganda until her world is turned upside down when she is introduced to the game of chess.
The film stars David Oyelowo (Selma), Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave) and newcomer Madina Nalwanga and is Nair’s seventh film to be presented at the festival.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo (who should have an Oscar for his work in Selma) topline an inspirational new Disney film called Queen of Katwe, about a young girl in a Ugandan village who uses her skills at the game of chess as a way to achieve her dreams. It's a shame the movie decided to use dialogue as obvious as "the little one can become the big one," because the metaphors about using chess to overcome obstacles are made exceedingly clear in the rest of the trailer without that on-the-nose explanation; still, this looks like a solid breakout role for newcomer Madina Nalwanga and an inspiring film that's based on a true story.
Queen of Katwe hits theaters on September 23rd.

After breaking out in 12 Years a Slave, we actually haven’t seen Lupita Nyong’o on screen since. Yes, she did motion-capture work for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Jungle Book, but for those hoping for a more substantial role from the actress, it will arrive this year. Mississippi Masala and Monsoon Wedding director Mira Nair recently adapted Tim Crothers‘ book, based on his own article for Espn, with Queen of Katwe and the first trailer has landed today.
The Disney drama follows the true story of Phiona Mutesi, who comes from the slums of Kampala, Uganda and became a chess prodigy as a teenager. The first trailer shows off an authentic, feel-good drama and we imagine it’ll be a strong fit for fall festivals before it hits theaters. Also starring newcomer Madina Nalwanga and David Oyelowo, check out the trailer and poster below.

Last night the Producers Guild of America (PGA) gave out awards for achievement in films and television released in 2011. The big winner was The Artist, which took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. As the winner of this award takes the Best Picture Oscar three times out of four, any betting on the top Oscar honor is pretty much over at this point. Read on for the full list of winners. The PGA website provides the list. In each case I've left the full slate of nominees, and winners are bolded. I'm happy to see the excellent A Tribe Calle Quest doc, Beats, Rhymes and Life, picking up the award for best documentary. The Darryl F. The Producers Guild of America has announced their nominations for the PGA Awards and it's hard not to agree with every movie on the list. All of the ones I've seen are great films, and the ones I haven't seen I've heard are amazing. The only two on the list I haven't watched are The Artist and The Descendants, both of which I'm looking forward to seeing. I'd love Hugo or War Horse to take home the top prize though. Those were my two favorite movies of 2011. The winners will be announced on January 21st, 2012; check out the full press released with the list of nominations below and tell us what you think! What would you like to see win?

We really can’t say that 2011 is behind us until award season is finished, and as we get closer to the coveted Academy Awards in February, various other guilds and organizations are recognizing the best that 2011 had to offer. Today the Producers Guild of America announced their nominees for Best Picture. The mainstream media grants little-to-no attention toward the PGA Awards, but their influence over the Academy and the Best Picture nominees is absolutely impossible to refute. IndieWIRE points out that, in the past four years, all the recipients of the top Oscar prize have been victorious with the PGA; if that weren’t enough — when, let’s be honest, it should be — nine out of last year’s ten nominees were recognized by the group.
They’re kind of a big deal, is the point that needs to be communicated.
Because of that, though, the 2012 selections raise a couple of eyebrows. No one is surprised to see The Artist, The Descendants, War Horse, or even Hugo stake their claim — it’s very likely that one of the four will win Best Picture — yet, with those previously-stated facts in mind, the recognition of Bridesmaids, The Ides of March, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...

Here's your best indicator yet as to what the crop of nominations for the Best Picture Oscar is likely to be. The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has announced its nominations for 2011 awards, which will be doled out on January 21. The ten films nominated for the PGA's top honor include expected pictures such as The Artist, The Descendants and War Horse. There are no real surprises, but the growing Oscar chances for The Help won't be hurt by getting a PGA nomination (would be slightly wild to see Chris Columbus, a producer on The Help, with an Oscar), and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris makes an appearance on the list, too. There are a couple surprises, though, in the form of Bridesmaids and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo -- the Judd Apatow and Scott Rudin effects in full force there. With 5-10 Best Picture nominations possible for this year's Oscars,...

While discussing his filmmaking technique behind Gainsbourg for next week’s Reject Radio, graphic novelist and writer/director Joann Sfar said he was working with John Carls (producer of Rango and Where the Wild Things Are) to produce an animated film called Little Vampire – modeled after his “Little Vampire Goes to School.” In the film, a young vampire who lives with older monsters, and longs for the company of youth. He finds it in a human boy named Michel, whom he befriends. According to Variety, Sfar has likened the tone to a blend between Roger Corman horror and the “Peanuts” comic strip. Which is awesome. When I asked if it would be like his last graphic novel adaptation, The Rabbi’s Cat, he said, “that was made and released in France, and it’s a low budget, 2D animated movie, but Little Vampire will be big. Little Vampire will be the usual standard of animation. We...

One of the most difficult things for a filmmaker to do is to create truly three dimensional characters. We're not talking about 3-D technology, of course, but rather the tricky process of crafting a character who truly comes to life on the screen; one wrong move and you're left with a character who falls flat.
Now imagine how hard it's going to be for the people behind "Flat Stanley."
Yes, get out your "Flat Stanley" cutouts, because Deadline is reporting that Walden Media has landed the rights to adapt the popular series of kids books for the big screen.
"Flat Stanley," for those of you wondering, first charmed kids back in 1964 thanks to author Jeff Brown's story about a kid who is literally flattened when a bulletin board falls on him. He's totally fine, though, and ends up using his powers of ultimate flatness to entertain himself and even occasionally fight crime.

Walden Media has acquired film rights to Jeff Brown's children's book series "Flat Stanley" about a two-dimensional person stuck in a 3D world says Deadline.
The adventures follow Stanley Lambchop, a kid who is given a bulletin board by his father to put above his bed. One night it falls off and flattens him. He's fine other than the fact he's now two-dimensional.
He can now can slip under doors, pose as a kite, and solves an art heist by posing as a wall painting.
The film will be shot live action, with visual effects being employed to turn the lead character into a literally flat hero. John Carls will produce.

Exclusive: Walden Media has acquired film rights to Flat Stanley, the series of children's books created in 1964 by Jeff Brown about the adventures of a two-dimensional person stuck in a 3D world. The plan is to shoot the film live action, using visual effects to turn the lead character into a one-dimensional hero (why do I feel like I've given Deadline commenters a wealth of ammunition to discuss the current state of 3D and certain leading actors with those last two sentences?) The protagonist is Stanley Lambchop, who, after being given a bulletin board by his father to put above his bed, is flattened by it in the night. He's Ok despite his appearance and can slip under doors and entertain his brother by posing as a kite. He even solves an art heist by posing as a wall painting. The series has sold millions of copies around the world.

"To make a movie about what it feels like to be 9 years old -- that was my simple intention," says Spike Jonze, whose edgy riff on Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, Where the Wild Things Are hits theaters on Oct. 16. But don’t let the PG rating fool you. Where most family films are comically zany and full of morals, Wild Things is naturalistic, dramatic, and raw. Jonze -- who clashed with Warner Bros. over the final product -- has directed what's reportedly a $80 million family film about childhood that really isn't for children, leaving its box office prospects...

Who knew that a guy who built his fortune selling overpriced shoes to kids who could never truly feel accepted unless they had them was also a big geek? Phil Knight, the king of the Nike empire, took over Will Vinton Studios, most known for the California Raisins, and turned it into Laika a few years back, employing his son Travis as one of the lead animators.
The film Laika’s most associated with is the Neil Gaiman adaptation Coraline, which Variety reports this morning will finally see an Oscar-qualifying release later this year, followed by a wide theatrical on February 6th, 2009.
