Republic raids an early Rko talkie for a fantastic special effects sequence, and you won’t believe how it’s repurposed — in a story about a TV personality (in 1939!) taking on a corrupt political mob. New York crumbles and is then washed away — sort of. It’s yet another resurfacing of a title that not long ago we couldn’t see to save our cinema-curious souls.

Void. “A completely empty space”… according to a quick Google search. Well, not so much, when it comes to art. In fact many an artist, whether it be in words, paint, sound, or pictures, have tried to fill it since mankind slithered out of the primordial soup eons ago. The attraction may be it is the blankest canvas of them all. And possibly the darkest…
The Void is the latest leap into the “empty space”, which lands chin deep in B-movie tentacle stew. Cooked up from the minds of Jeremy Gillespie and Steve Konstanski, both on writing and directing duties, and pretty much everything else. Their backgrounds are in art direction and practical effects, and they deftly handle the practical “Lovecraftian” creatures and blood splatter; lovingly dished up from the pages of a John Carpenter inspired recipe book.

One of the more action-packed features to come from the current crop of John Carpenter-inspired filmmakers, The Void finds collaborators Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski going much further than many of their peers: Where others might relish an hour or so of slow-build retro mood that leads to a single horrific set piece, these writer/directors graft enough plot for three different varieties of 1980s drive-in flicks into a single film. The result should find admirers among the fanboy crowd, raising the stakes for the team's next feature, even if it has little crossover potential.

Fans of Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie's work within the Canadian film collective known as Astron-6, specifically Manborg and Father's Day, are in for a surprise with their latest offering, The Void, which they wrote and directed together. Gone is the tongue-in-cheek, wink-and-a-nod satire of those two previous films, which has been replaced with a much darker and serious tone, all while still paying homage to a bygone era of genre cinema.

I was recently comparing directorial culture today with that of the 80s and 90s, referencing how new technology has allowed a disintegration of the old school “pay your dues” mentality. Forty years ago you had artists working their way up under the tutelage of established directors through the more niche technical departments. See James Cameron (matte painter on Escape from New York) and Joe Johnston (visual effects on Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark) as examples. I’m not saying this type of mailroom intern to studio executive evolution isn’t still possible or relevant, just that young filmmakers can currently make a calling card film like the $750,000 budgeted Safety Not Guaranteed and find themselves helming a $150 million blockbuster like Jurassic World in only three years.
Is that talent? Luck? A bit of both, surely. But I still admire the idea of learning before jumping, earning the big...

The “fighting foes from a single location” structure has been utilised in so many screenplays over the years but often makes for exhilarating film-making: from Night of the Living Dead and The Evil Dead to Assault on Precinct 13, Alien and the low budget likes of Stalled and Green Room. It’s a concept that lends itself so well to horror (and low budgets), so provides the perfect basis for Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski’s feature debut, The Void.
Despite seeming unique with its dimension transcending creatures, The Void is heavily inspired by various parts of 1980s/90s horrors such as: Halloween 2, Hellraiser, The Thing, The Exorcist III and Re-animator. But it often also feels hugely energising as the aforementioned facets are inventively melded for a fresh phantasmagorical b-flick which mostly recalls the oeuvre of Clive Barker and Stuart Gordon and makes for eye-blistering cinema.

When practical effects drive a film’s talking points, I pause. Gruesome monster designs and caved-in prosthetics merely supplement story, yet a film like Harbinger Down piles all its eggs into one blood-soaked basket. Fans yearn for realistic SFX, and filmmakers always aim to dethrone The Thing‘s bar-setting kingship. But at what cost? Take Astron-6’s The Void. Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski create Lovecraftian hellbeasts from synthetic molding, yet a cultist presence could have used more fleshing out. Bodies splatter, character structures crumble and visuals outweigh storytelling.

Fellow film site ScreenDaily.com had some news from the American Film Market regarding The Void, a Lovecraftian horror thriller by Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie of Manborg fame. The film will commence shooting on November 17th, in Canada, and several sales outfits have been secured: Salt for the Uk, and Xyz and CAA for North America. Though both are from the Astron-6 crew, Kostanski and Gillespie's aim is to make The Void a decidedly straightforward and non-goofy affair. Here is the synopsis from their Kickstarter campaign: In the middle of a routine patrol, officer Daniel Carter happens upon a blood-soaked figure limping down a deserted stretch of road. He rushes the young man to a nearby rural hospital staffed by a skeleton crew, only to...

From its humble beginnings six years ago, Mono No Aware has grown into a major annual expanded cinema event, as well as a wonderful organization promoting a deep appreciation for the art of filmmaking.
The 7th annual edition of Mono No Aware’s signature event will screen for two nights at Lightspace Studios in Brooklyn, New York on December 6 and 7. Both nights feature one-time-only cinematic performances utilizing 16mm, 8mm and 35mm film projection, as well as “alternative light” projections, performed live by filmmaking artists.
The one performance that the Underground Film Journal highly recommends is Jodie Mack‘s “Let Your Light Shine,” featuring an abstract animated film watched through special prismatic glasses worn by audience members. The Journal experienced a screening of “Let Your Light Shine” in Los Angeles that we considered might be the future of cinema.

Robbie Deans, coach of the Australian Wallabies for five years, and man that supposedly led to the downfall of Australian Rugby. This article is going to analyse whether Robbie Deans really flushed our Wallaby side down the drain, or whether he was just the victim of media backlash and under-education.
Robbie Dean’s coaching career began in 1997 with the Canterbury Club in New Zealand. A former player himself- Deans had a deep understanding about the ins and outs of Rugby and how that could be best translated toward a team that would win.
His mentality for the game and the team must have been enough because he was upgraded to coach of the Crusaders and Assistant Coach for the All Blacks themselves. This promotion showed the rugby world that Deans was a force to be reckoned with. During Dean’s time as assistant coach (from 2000-2003) the team themselves played a total of 37 games.

If you want to know about contemporary British jazz or prog, you go to Downtown Music Gallery, where between them Bruce Gallanter and Manny Maris are an encyclopedic repository of knowledge and infallible taste. So when on my most recent trip there, Bruce passed me a sampler called Who Is Phil Gibbs? and told me the titular guitarist would be playing a series of shows in NYC (including his USA debut), I played said disc as soon as I got home, and was immediately intrigued.
In its listing, Tony calls Phil Gibbs "a staunch free-improviser" and goes on to compare him to Derek Bailey, but that's just one facet of his multi-stylistic habits. Drawing from a variety of contexts, with recording dates ranging from 2000 to this year, the CD's eight tracks reveal a far more versatile musician than Tony suggests.

The Football Fan’s A-z Guide to Rugby Union
American founding father Benjamin Franklin in 1789 said: “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes”. It’s a sentiment that is hard to argue with, but is clearly not quite complete.
Benjamin Franklin was a few years too early to experience that awkward moment in the middle of every rugby game when the referee makes a decision that no one understands except, (and not always), him.
The offside rule in football has long being the discussion of terraces and dinner tables and was recently immortalised on a new 50p coin. But we rugby aficionados scoff at such confusion over one law. Over in rugby land we have a multitude of laws to be confused at and scratch our heads over. Our ‘throw ins’ have 92 laws alone! After a couple of weeks off after the World Cup, my batteries are recharged I am ready to report all the latest on-goings in this, the catchily named “Ball In Touch” column. The rugby savvy amongst you will see what I’ve done there with the title, this being the cheaper option than changing my name to Jeff Rugby Ball, but I don’t want to make this column all about me. If you have any questions or comments then please feel free to voice them either in the comments below or to my Twitter @jeffreyball. As a telecom company would say, it’s good to talk.

Despite wearing all white in contrast to the All Blacks, by no means was it a sign of surrender by the French who performed admirably and pushed the hosts to the final minute before New Zealand eventually came out on top.
After a lively haka to which the French walked towards in defiance, the play started frantically with both sides desperate to set a foundtion. The first chance of points was given to Piri Weepu when Parra was overly hasty out of defence. Despite not being the easiest of kicks, the All Black sent it quite wide, the nerves evident in several players already.
The French started brightly, matching New Zealand in the opening ten minutes just as they had in their last meeting in the pools. A succession of well placed kicks pinned the All Blacks back, with play continuing around a starry eyed Morgan Parra who had his...

Richie McCaw’s metatarsal and Dan Carter’s groin have occupied the minds of many New Zealanders recently, with more men than women thinking about the latter than is typical.
Luck was not something that smiled on the All Blacks in the last couple of weeks, highlighted by the loss of two fly half’s in a week, with Colin Slade suffering almost the same groin injury as the man he was understudying. Such is there fear of anything happening to 3rd choice Aaron Cruden he has been banned from his favourite past time of skateboarding.
To add injury to insult, Mils Muliaina fractured his shoulder last week in what was his 100th All Black appearance. But injury equals opportunity, and Stephen Donald and Hosea Gear are the chosen ones and who knows, they could be the next ones to “do a Priestland”

They say we live in a P.C. world but in Auckland this morning, P.C. stood for Post Carter, with all the talk about the loss of their talismanic fly half. With Richie McCaw fighting through the pain to win his 101st cap despite having a ‘niggly’ foot, the loss of Dan Carter had sent the host nation into a spiral of pessimism; such was the perceived influence of the highest international point scorer. Young fly half Colin Slade had big boots to fill.
Argentina too were without a couple of their stand out players. Fernandez Lobbe and Juan Martin Hernandez being the big name misses. Even with a full strength team though, the Pumas were always going to be underdogs in this clash.
The pomp of the occasion began with Mils Muliana being given a standing ovation in recognition of this, his 100th cap. Before the haka signalled...

Headline writers found their jobs made easier yet again today as it was revealed Manu Tuilagi, the England centre, had been fined Nz$10,000 for wearing a sponsored mouth guard, contravening the International Rugby Board’s (Irb) strict Rugby World Cup terms on participation, which are designed to protect official tournament sponsors.
Although in itself not a huge issue, it is the latest in an increasingly long line of events that have occurred in New Zealand that have seen England featuring on the front pages, rather than just the back.
Manu has professed his innocence in what could have been a genuine mistake. But the fact his brother Alesana, currently part of the Samoa squad, was also sanctioned for the same offence last week could lead to a few eyebrows being raised. And when it comes to eyebrows, Martin Johnson fends off all-comers.
So what is going on with England? Well...

New Zealand’s national rugby team, the All Blacks, are hosting the Rugby World Cup later this year, and have just launched an exciting new charity initiative.

Only 35 of the cars have been made by Ford New Zealand, with one of the cars being auctioned for charity on TradeMe.co.nz between May 29th and June 8th.

Since discontinuing The Week in Sports feature back in December, we've had a lot of requests to revive it. There's just something about images of handsome male athletes in action that our readers never tire of looking at. Who knew we had so many sports enthusiasts around here!
Anyway, while we can't bring it back as a regular feature, we did promise that The Week in Sports would make an occasional appearance around these parts. And this week we did come across a trove of amazing sports wire photos, so we felt we had to share.
This bounty of athletic beefcake – or "sportscake™" as we're calling it – includes shots of Matthew Mitcham and other divers at the Fina Diving World Series, Lebron James, Roger Federer, a bunch of cheeky rugby players, and more! Who knows, maybe it'll give you some ideas on guys to vote for in the Hot 100.
Enjoy!

Since The Week in Sports began as a feature on AfterElton.com we've kept our queer eye on the photo wires to bring you a weekly compilation of the most arresting images of male athleticisim from around the world.
2009 is coming to a close, so in this final installment we thought we'd look back and gather together the best of the best. Hence The Year in Sports. (Well, technicaly the half-year in sports, since we only started this feature in July.)
Now we know not every football fan is also a tennis fan, and some rugby fanatics cannot abide men's gymnastics. So this time out we've helpfully sorted the photos by category. You can jump to whatever photo collection you want by the table of contents below. Oh, and in addition to the major sports, we've got a few special photo categories that we hope you'll enjoy!

Download image as wallpaper John Abraham is surely having the time of his life. While girls all over the country can't stop drooling over his chiseled physique in the promos of Dostana , the actor has even managed to gain some popularity overseas. John is the only Indian to feature in the '25 Sexiest Men' list compiled by E! News. What's more in a special episode of the 'Sexiest Men' series, John has even made it to the elite Top 10 club where he features alongside soccer star David Beckham, actor Johnny Depp, rugby union footballer Dan Carter and Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers who starred in Bend it Like Beckham. John, who is currently shooting in USA for Yrf's New York, said he attributes his selection in this list to the kind of films and commercial endorsements that he has done, his ever-growing international fan base and the love for his craft.
