In the vast tapestry of Oscar history, specific years define instants of talents converging to produce a constellation of extraordinary performances. 1993 was one such epoch when the best supporting actor lineup at the 66th Academy Awards ceremony showcased an assembly of unparalleled depth. The roster included Leonardo DiCaprio for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Ralph Fiennes for “Schindler’s List,” John Malkovich for “In the Line of Fire,” Pete Postlethwaite for “In the Name of the Father,” and ultimate victor, Tommy Lee Jones for “The Fugitive.”

Although distributed by Paramount, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is an understated gem of the 1990s indie scene. Like The Last Picture Show, its New Hollywood cousin, Grape is a small town coming-of-age story with young characters that dream of the wider world and whether they have a place in it. Now, after years of being in the online wilderness, Lasse Hallström’s cult favourite will land on digital platforms 16th April and Amazon Prime Video 7th May.
So, what is eating Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp)? Well, there are several things. Stuck in a sparse Iowan town, Gilbert works a menial day job at a failing grocers, tends to his obese mother’s every whim, and cares for his brother Arnie (Leonard DiCaprio), a mentally impaired teenager who is endearing yet extremely challenging. You could be forgiven for thinking this was the premise of a kitchen sink drama, yet What’s...

One of Leonardo DiCaprio's first big breaks was a part in the 1993 drama What's Eating Gilbert Grape, which makes the passing of his beloved costar Darlene Cates that much more heartbreaking. The actress, who played the Oscar-winner's mother in the film, died on Sunday at the age of 69. Her family was first to relay the sad news via Facebook, letting people know that she passed away "peacefully in her sleep." Darlene not only served as Leo's mom on screen, but also as a mother figure behind the scenes, which he discussed in a touching tribute on his own Facebook page. "Darlene was the best acting mom I ever had the privilege of working alongside," he wrote. "Her endearing personality and incredible talent will live on in the memories of those who knew her, and those who loved her work. Cates’ breakout role in Grape came after she appeared on an episode of Sally Jessy Raphael titled “Too Heavy To Leave Their House.” On the show, Cates talked about how being morbidly obese impacted her livelihood, openly discussing how a pelvic infection caused her to gain 150 pounds. Gilbert Grape author and screenwriter Peter Hedges caught Cates on the show, and knew she’d be perfect for the role of the mostly housebound Bonnie Grape.

One of the downsides of living in a movie landmark with a half-mile long driveway is that obsessed fans who can’t get a satisfactory peek from the road will occasionally think nothing about rolling up to your front door. Jim Lutz and Alex Carrillo have lived in their 100-year old farmhouse in Manor, Texas, since 1977, raising five children, running a jewelry business, and occasionally lending their rustic home to a movie or television production. But the tourists who come knocking aren’t imposing on their hospitality because of Roadie, the 1980 movie starring Art Carney and Meat Loaf that filmed there.

In the 1993 movie "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," Darlene Cates played Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio's morbidly obese mother Bonnie, who hasn't left the house in years while dealing with depression following her husband's suicide. Now, twenty years later, 64-year-old Cates has gone from 575 lbs to 331 (pictured, before/after) and is ready to get back to acting. "I can do moms real well," she said. "I'm not opposed to doing science fiction or comedy, but there has to be respect. I refuse to be the joke, the fat woman joke, in any movie. I've turned down roles." Cates is interested in taking one or two roles. But first, she'll have to recover from a series of health scares and four surgeries that kept her in hospitals for almost 11 months, until last November. For now, she remains housebound, but has plans to lose another 100 lbs.

With the Oscar nomination buzz surrounding Leonardo DiCaprio for his titular performance in J. Edgar, it's a good time to take another look at a Texas-made movie from early in DiCaprio's career, the terrific What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Released in 1993, director Lasse Hallström's highly praised film follows the Grape family, a close-knit but intriguingly dysfunctional clan living in the fictional Iowa town of Endora (although actually shot in Central Texas). Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) spends much of his time watching over his mentally retarded younger brother, 17-year-old Arnie (DiCaprio, in an Oscar-nominated performance), while his sisters, Amy (Laura Harrington) and Ellen (Mary Kate Schellhardt) slave away in the kitchen. Ruling the roost is the siblings' widowed, depressed and morbidly obese mother, Bonnie (Darlene Cates), whose girth and mental state have prevented her from leaving the family's rural house for years.

So, super-soft tissues at the ready for my top five tearjerkers – my first, my last, my every viewing …
1) Ghost
If it's not bad enough that Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) only replies "ditto" when his girlfriend Molly Jensen (Demi Moore) says "I love you", he's murdered before he can even utter the L-word. So the final scene, when the adorable couple are briefly reunited and Sam finally tells her he's always loved her before being rushed to heaven – and yes, accompanied by the Unchained...

Just eat it!
I'm totally not crazy about watermelons myself. I don't like anything where I have to spit out seeds. You?
This entirely random post has been brought to you by a recent screening of What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993) in which just about everyone is excellent even though people only talk about it today in terms of Leonardo DiCaprio's first entirely deserved Oscar nomination. I meant to watch just one scene from it the other day and ended up sitting through the whole thing. Addictive, I tell ya. There's so many choice scenes but one moment I fell hard for all over again is when Johnny Depp's enormously obese mother (played by Darlene Cates), embarrassed to meet her son's new girl (Juliette), introducers herself with a shameful "I wasn't always like this." Juliette merely repeats her phrase "I wasn't always like this" and then a barely visible shrug.

The flick that got Leonardo DiCaprio his first Oscar nomination follows Johnny Depp as a guy stuck in small-town Iowa, dealing with his family and dreaming of getting out. What's Eating Gilbert Grape Dir. Lasse Hallstrom (1993) The plot of What's Eating Gilbert Grape isn't a world beater; rather, it's the stuff of small-town Bruce Springsteen songs. In Hallstrom's lovely and smartly observed film (he's since had an uneven Hollywood career, recently helming the hit Dear John), Johnny Depp stars as the frustrated young Gilbert Grape, a 21-year-old kid sleepwalking through his responsibilities, namely, his family: his two sisters, his grieving 500-pound mother (Darlene Cates, who was discovered on a Sally Jessy Raphael episode), and his retarded younger brother Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio in an impressive, Oscar-nominated performance). He takes some pleasure in an affair with a lonely housewife (Mary Steenburgen) and...

He takes some pleasure in an affair with a lonely housewife (Mary Steenburgen) and starts to open up to a young woman named Becky (Juliette Lewis). And as Gilbert starts to fall in love, his life changes in small increments. But what's really touching about this film, based on the (very much worth-reading...
