"Just trying to figure out what side you're really on..." Lightbulb Film Distribution in the UK has debuted their own official trailer for a US indie film called Deadland, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Lance Larson. This premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year and we posted a trailer then for its festival unveiling. The film is described as a psychological thriller - U.S. Border Patrol Agent, Angel Waters, makes a routine apprehension that will haunt him forever. "Though the immigrant he took into custody is killed at a border outpost, his death is only the beginning of the suffering Angel must endure... Set against the backdrop of the harsh and desolate Rio Grande river, Deadland uses the American and Mexican border as a launching pad to explore not only immigration but identity." The film stars Roberto Urbina as Angel, McCaul Lombardi, Julieth Restrepo, Kendal Rae, Luis Chavez,...

The Chicago P.D. hiatus ended with a new episode on Wednesday night.
When we last saw the show, Dante Torres was finishing up an undercover case to bring down a drug boss, Rafel Perez (Julio Cedillo).
During that case, Torres became romantically involved with the wife of Rafel Perez, Gloria Perez (Yara Martinez).
In a dramatic conclusion, Gloria killed Rafel. Rather than run, she told Torres she was remaining in Chicago. It could mean the story circles back later.
Also, earlier this season, the Chicago P.D. cast added actress Bojana Novakovic as Detective Josephine Petrovic. The quirky detective helped Intelligence on several cases, but Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) became suspicious of her and discovered a drinking problem.
A serial killer also remained on the loose, but this new episode was focused on a separate case.

The new episode of Chicago P.D. returned viewers to the undercover operation Dante Torres has been working on.
It was revealed that Torres had been undercover for 36 days when the episode began. He was trying to take down the Rafael Perez drug ring (played by Julio Cesar Cedillo).
Torres was already getting too deep and had been sleeping with his informant. Actress Yara Martinez was back to continue her role as Gloria Perez (wife of the drug boss).
Rather than getting closer to answers, Torres had been relegated to working as a mechanic for the drug ring. But since the episode was focusing on him, it was clear something was about to happen.
The worse Perez treated Gloria, the more time she wanted to spend with Torres. It led to even more complications with the case.

Obviously enough, this originally premiered at the 2023 Dallas Film Festival last year, with a stop at the Heartland Film Festival in Indiana as well. They set off on a wild Texas adventure to outwit a corrupt oil company to hit pay dirt before Merle's dreams are foreclosed, partnering with a kind waitress along the way. Now that most schools are back in session, who’s up for a history lesson? Okay, we had one a few weeks ago with the, still in theatres, Oppenheimer. And though it’s really well done, to be honest, it’s kind of a “downer” what with all the “atomic bomb stuff”. This new flick also deals with science, but it concerns the exploration of space, much like the surprise “crowd-pleaser” of 2016, Hidden Figures. Like that film, it concerns one member, rather than the mathematics trio, of a minority that is usually not the focus of these docudramas. Oh, and rather than the swinging sixties this story is much more recent, capping off in 2009. It’s really the story of a dreamer, a man who dares to imagine leaving Earth to travel A Million Miles Away.

Mexican novelist, screenwriter and occasional director Guillermo Arriaga made his name in the film realm penning multi-threaded dramas about the ripple effects of tragic incidents. “Amores Perros” and “Babel” stand out among them. Now the scribe’s cinematic legacy turns into a family affair with his children Mariana and Santiago Arriaga making their feature directorial debut via a searing coming-of-age road trip movie their father wrote.
But don’t expect the breezy sexiness of something like Alfonso Cuarón’s “Y Tu Mamá También.” Despite featuring adolescent protagonists, this journey into maturity holds major emotional stakes but few flutters of careless abandon. As is common in Arriaga’s scripts, the tale finds its potency in the intricate moral grays of the human condition, here portrayed through a collection of strikingly incisive performances by the young cast.

How many shark movies are too many shark movies? And how many ways are there for them to showcase something that hasn’t already been done to death? Directed by Adrian Grunberg and written by Carlos Cisco and Boise Esquerra, The Black Demon borrows the same trope as Jaws and the Meg series—exploring the theme of an enormous monster living in the oceans, preying on humans because of their consistent greed in wanting to take over nature. Here, the real, iniquitous behemoth is not the beast in the waters but the fictional oil conglomerate. Sadly, none of the events in the movie amount to anything substantial, and the ideas all seem half-baked before just boiling down to a dispassionate family drama. The least you would expect is for the movie to have a decent amount of jump scares and high-tension moments that leave you on the edge of your seat,...

After the trainwreck that was Cocaine Shark and with the spectre of Jurassic Shark 3: Seavenge looming over me, The Black Demon, or any other shark film for that matter, may not have been an obvious choice. But this one caught my attention when it was announced and the idea of a finned fear film with enough of a budget to give it some bite was hard to say no to.
Paul Sturges is the safety officer for Nixon Oil, a corporate name that does not exactly inspire confidence. He has been sent to Baja to inspect one of the company’s rigs and has brought his family along. He may have to work but his wife Ines, daughter, Audrey, and son Tommy can have a vacation.

Plot: When a leaky oil rig awakens a vengeful god in the form of a megalodon shark, an oil man is trapped on the rig with his family and the surviving workers.
Review: There are a whole lot of shark thrillers out there, but not many of them have a supernatural edge. That makes director Adrian Grunberg’s The Black Demon stand out from the pack a bit, because while the shark in this thriller is described as being a megalodon, like the sharks in The Meg and Shark Attack 3 and probably plenty of others, this isn’t just a megalodon that has resurfaced from the prehistoric age. This movie, which has marketing material that informs that it’s “based on the Mexican legend”, presents us with a giant shark that is actually a vengeful god, awakened by the pollution that has been spilled in its waters, and is able...

The legend of El Demonio Negro, or The Black Demon, brings a mythical, almost supernatural, quality to this latest shark attack horror feature. Director Adrian Grünberg (Rambo: The Last Blood), working from a script by Boise Esquerra and Carlos Cisco, dials in on the folkloric aspect of The Black Demon to wield the horror as a cautionary entry in eco-horror rather than a conventional shark attack feature. Fresh mythology struggles to keep these shark infested waters afloat, however.

Chupa is a Netflix movie directed by Jonás Cuarón starring Evan Whitten and Demian Bichir.
The chupacabra is a legend about an animal that feeds on the blood of goats. Coming all the way from Mexico, the story has become a classic horror story.
This time, Jonás Cuarón gives the story a more youthful twist and turns it into a heartwarming tale of friendship and adventure in the style of the 80’s and those charming and forgettable films that followed in the wake of E.T.
It’s fun to see Christian Slater again.

Back in 2018, Steve Alten’s The Meg finally came to the big screen, but not in the form that we had originally been promised. From Rambo: Last Blood director Adrian Grünberg, The Black Demon is based on the Mexican legend of a massive Megalodon shark, and Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive first look at the action-horror movie’s official art and images this morning.
The Black Demon will release in theaters on April 28, 2023, and you can also watch the trailer here. In the film, Josh Lucas (The Forever Purge) battles a giant man-eating shark.
“Oilman Paul Sturges’ (Lucas) idyllic family vacation turns into a nightmare when they encounter a ferocious megalodon shark that will stop at nothing to protect its territory.

Rambo: Last Blood (watch the extended cut of that Here) director Adrian Grunberg‘s shark thriller The Black Demon is set to reach theatres on April 28th, and I’ve been anxious to see a trailer for this one because the only publicity stills released up to this point have only shown lead actor Josh Lucas (The Forever Purge) and his character’s family standing on dry land. Now, the moment I’ve been waiting months for has arrived. IGN got the exclusive first look at a trailer for The Black Demon, and this finally gives the sight of Lucas and other characters out on the water, dealing with a “big ass shark”! You can watch the trailer in the embed above.
The Black Demon marks the first feature writing credit for Boise Esquerra. The story Esquerra crafted begins when oilman Paul Sturges takes his family on vacation to Bahia Azul.

"This is not just any shark, it's a curse." The Avenue has revealed a freaky trailer for The Black Demon, another epic mega shark movie gliding into waters near you soon. While we wait for the other megalodon movie, The Meg 2: The Trench, due out sometime in the summer, they're offering us this bait instead. Josh Lucas stars as the oil worker Paul Sturges, who goes to inspect a rig but finds it abandoned. Stuck on the rig, their idyllic family vacation turns into a nightmare when they then encounter a ferocious megalodon shark that will stop at nothing to protect its territory. This also stars Fernanda Urrejola and Julio Cesar Cedillo, and it was shot in the Dominican Republic. "He's going to keep getting his revenge until a sacrifice is made." An intriguing mix of supernatural horror + shark movie, this looks like it might be good. Dive in.

Director Jonás Cuarón reimagines the terrifying mythical beast as a cute and furry little creature in Netflix’s Chupa. The two-minute trailer for the family-friendly adventure confirms this incredibly adorable baby chupacabra looks nothing like a goat-killing, nightmare-inducing monster.
“I was a small kid when the legend started. When the idea came of turning [the myth] on its head and using it to tell a family adventure, I was immediately excited,” said Cuarón in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “I’ve always been a huge fan of E.T. and believe that stories like that are so powerful because they play on the idea of kids being misunderstood by adults. Chupa might be a monster but he’s the only one that truly understands what Alex is going through. The bond between a boy and a creature is so pure, like with a pet, it transcends language.”

"He'll be our little secret." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for an adventure movie titled Chupa, rated PG even tough it's only going to be streaming on Netflix for its release in April. This is the latest from Mexican director Jonás Cuarón, Alfonso Cuarón's son - his debut feature was Desierto from a few years ago. While visiting his family in Mexico, teenage Alex gains an unlikely companion when he discovers a young chupacabra hiding in his grandpa's shed. In order to save the mythical creature, Alex and his cousins must embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Directed by Jonás, and produced by 26th Street Pictures' Chris Columbus, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe, Chupa is a nostalgic journey through myth, memory, and the making of one's own personal legend. This stars Evan Whitten as Alex, along with Demián Bichir, Christian Slater, Ashley Ciarra, Nickolas Verdugo, Adriana Paz,...

Although Netflix’s family adventure Chupa is inspired by the legend of the chupacabra, director Jonás Cuarón was determined to make the creature at the heart of his film much less fearsome than the mythical creature. “Our goal was to create an incredibly cute creature based on a terrifying legend,” said Cuarón in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “The mythical creature was described as a hairless dog with wings and sharp teeth. Chupa is furry and incredibly cute.”
The first photos from Chupa confirm this creature, at least as a youngster, is anything but terrifying.
Cuarón added: “I’ve always been a huge fan of E.T. and believe that stories like that are so powerful because they play on the idea of kids being misunderstood by adults. Chupa might be a monster, but he’s the only one that truly...

The film is premiering at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival coming up in March, playing in the Narrative Spotlight section this year. The film is described as a pyschological thriller - U.S. Border Patrol Agent, Angel Waters, makes a routine apprehension that will haunt him forever. "Though the immigrant he took into custody is killed at a border outpost, his death is only the beginning of the suffering Angel must endure... Set against the backdrop of the harsh and desolate Rio Grande river, Deadland uses the American and Mexican border as a launching pad to explore not only immigration but identity." This stars Roberto Urbina as Angel, McCaul Lombardi, Julieth Restrepo, Kendal Rae, Luis Chavez, Julio Cesar Cedillo, Manuel Uriza,...

Exactly two months ago today, we heard that Rambo: Last Blood (watch the extended cut of that Here) director Adrian Grunberg‘s shark thriller The Black Demon was going to be reaching theatres on April 21st – a date that would, unfortunately, put it in direct competition with the new Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Rise. Now we’ve learned that The Black Demon has wisely decided to give Evil Dead Rise a little space, shifting its release date back one week to April 28th. Now we just need to see a trailer for this thing.

From Rambo: Last Blood director Adrian Grünberg, The Black Demon is said to be based on a Mexican legend, and it’s coming to theaters this April. A bit later than expected, however.

Rambo: Last Blood (watch the extended cut of that Here) director Adrian Grunberg‘s upcoming movie The Black Demon is a shark thriller, but you probably wouldn’t guess that from the promotional images that have been released. Here’s the first one, showing star Josh Lucas (The Forever Purge) standing on dry ground. Now another image from The Black Demon has been unveiled by USA Today, and this one also shows Lucas standing on dry ground. This time he’s joined by co-stars Fernanda Urrejola (Cry Macho) and Venus Ariel (Dmz). The new image can be found at the bottom of this article.

Ten months have gone by since we saw a first look image from Rambo: Last Blood (watch the extended cut of that Here) director Adrian Grunberg‘s shark thriller The Black Demon – and that was actually the last time we heard anything about the movie, so I had forgotten about it. Thankfully, our friends at Bloody Disgusting were able to dig up the information that The Black Demon has a theatrical release date of April 21, 2023. Which will, unfortunately, put it in direct competition with the new Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Rise.

Narcos Season 4, otherwise known as Narcos: Mexico, will be headlined by Michael Peña and Diego Luna.
Netflix is about to roll out a rebooted iteration of its hit drug cartel drama for Narcos Season 4 or Narcos: Mexico.
The anthological turn that the series has made since Season 3 transitioned away from its focus on Pablo Escobar is even greater in Narcos: Mexico. Indeed, the series arrives refreshed yet again in this fourth season, touting a new era (the early 1980s), new country, new cartel and new narcos, this time focused on a set of characters in Diego Luna’s Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo and Michael Peña’s Enrique 'Kiki' Camarena.
Additionally, genre fans may be interested to know that Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash baddie Matt Letscher (Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash) will play James Kuykendal, a member of a new team of DEA agents and Colombian police.

Raised in the U.S., Claudia (22) is an undocumented illegal immigrant living beyond her means in a twisted version of the American dream. When she's arrested by the FBI for credit card fraud, Claudia is quickly deported to Mexico. Speaking no Spanish and lost in her foreign "homeland," she reluctantly takes refuge at her estranged father's cattle ranch. As she clashes with her unyielding father, she her attempts to return to the U.S. thrust her into a dangerous bond with a foreign smuggler, Ricky. Caught between her father's sermons, Ricky's promises, and the encroaching military, Claudia must navigate a tightrope of impossible choices.
That synopsis is simple enough to follow, right? But, what you’ll find once you begin watching Hostile Border is an engaging thriller. It’s a story that most cannot relate to, and perhaps that is why placing yourself in Claudia's (Vernonica Sixtos) position is so interesting.

Canadian director Denis Villenueve follows up his 2013/14, critically acclaimed dark duo: Prisoners and Enemy with a film that delves into the growing schism between drug law enforcement in the USA and the political wants and needs at national government level.
Emily Blunt plays Kate Mercer – an idealistic, fast rising star in the FBI’s battle state side. During her interview for this new role the questions – led by Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) a sandal wearing hippy spook with a glock – are oblique and the details of the...

Sicario Trailer. Denis Villeneuve‘s Sicario (2015) movie trailer stars Jon Bernthal, Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, and Victor Garber. Sicario‘s plot synopsis: “In Mexico, Sicario means hitman. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by an elite government task force official to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past, the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.”
This looks like an exciting drama. I immediately thought of The Bridge and Traffic when I began watching this trailer. Emily Blunt is center stage and she owns ever scene. Her character seems to have gotten over her head with her “allies.”
Sicario also stars Jeffrey Donovan, Raoul Trujillo, Daniel Kaluuya, Maximiliano Hernández, Sarah Minnich, Lora Martinez-Cunningham, Alan D. Purwin,...

Have you got a light? Here are some of the ways that lighters have helped to illuminate a film's narrative

"Cigarette lighters featured in films often go beyond their utilitarian function to serve as signifiers of a character's identity, becoming extensions of their owners' personas. These objects can reveal and illuminate multifaceted aspects of a character's life and psyche – including innermost secrets and desires.
Films depict cigarette lighters as tools of crime, deception, exoneration, investigation and manipulation. They are often represented as devices that drive the narrative, because the acquisition, possession and/or loss of a cigarette lighter can carry significant implications for the plot."
