Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).
“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.
Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the animated feature Oscar favorite (snubbed by the Academy’s VFX branch), took home four awards, including the top animated VFX prize. Sony Pictures Imageworks innovated...

In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

It’s truly a measure of the pandemic that the 19th annual Ves Awards (to be held virtually on April 6) was dominated by Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” with 13 nominations (topped by photoreal episode). Like the Oscar shortlist, there was an absence of big budget, VFX-intensive studio films. But, truth be told, Season 2 of Jon Favreau’s engaging “Star Wars” bounty hunter series offered the industry’s most innovative tech (wrapped around Industrial Light & Magic’s improved StageCraft virtual production system).
Pixar’s “Soul” was the top animation contender with five nominations, while the feature competition was split between “Project Power,” the Netflix superhero film, Robert Zemeckis’ “The Witches” (which streamed on HBO Max), and Disney’s live-action “Mulan” (which streamed on Disney+), each garnering three nominations.

While the VFX industry has shifted rapidly to remote access during the global pandemic to keep content pipelines churning, thousands of practitioners have been forced to remain in their offices, putting themselves at risk. That’s because of pre-existing non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) designed to protect intellectual property. As of Monday, though, nearly 10,000 VFX artists have banded together in support of working remotely, signing an online petition to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), launched by Mario Rokicki, a color supervisor at Double Negative in Vancouver.
“The NDAs that are forced on VFX Studios put artists and [staff] at [their] peril,” wrote Rokicki. “What was [a] minor inconvenience before is the major life risk situation with Coronavirus outbreak. VFX houses have or can quickly deploy secure technology solutions to allow work from home on the projects that with the magnitude of the pandemic will probably be delayed. All I ask is to put...

When Universal postponed the July 3 release of Illumination’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” it became the first post-production casualty of the global pandemic. Which sets it apart from delays in the release of such tentpoles as MGM’s 25th James Bond adventure, “No Time to Die,” Disney’s “Mulan” live-action remake and the “Black Widow” standalone, and Paramount’s “A Quiet Place Part II” sequel.
That’s because the Illumination Mac Guff animation studio in Paris has been unable to complete, due to disruptions to its workflow, the “Minions” sequel about 12-year-old Gru (Steve Carell) launching his life of crime. “In response to the severity of the situation in France, we are temporarily closing our Illumination Mac Guff studio in Paris,” said Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri in a statement.

The Visual Effects Society is gettin’ in toon for its 18th annual Ves Awards. The group said today that it has expanded the number of categories open to animation projects for its 2020 trophy show and also is launching a new category: Outstanding Special (Practical) Effects in a Photoreal Project.
Animation projects now can compete for Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a CG Project and in all three compositing categories: Outstanding Compositing in a Feature, Episode and Commercial. The 4,000-member group said the expanded eligibility reflects meaningful conversations with animation industry leaders and recognition of trends where live-action and toon production are blending and the legions of outstanding compositors working in animation.
The new Special Effects category was introduced after careful consideration by the Ves Awards Committee and collaborative discussion with prominent members of the Special Effects community, the Ves said.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” from Weta Digital could well be on its way to the elusive VFX Oscar after winning four Ves trophies Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton (including the top feature prize). Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” won for supporting VFX, Pixar’s “Coco” earned four awards (including VFX for animation), and “Game of Thrones” took home five awards (including VFX for TV).
The “Apes” finale, directed by Matt Reeves, benefited from a Shakespearean performance from Andy Serkis as Caesar, with Weta working its wizardry in much harsher conditions for the performance-captured animation. Not surprisingly, “Apes” additionally won for Caesar, the effects simulations for the thrilling avalanche, and compositing. However, although both “Rise” and “Dawn” captured Ves prizes, neither won the Oscar, so “War” is not a certainty in its race with “Blade Runner 2049.”

“The Ves 70 represents films that have had a significant, lasting impact on the practice and appreciation of visual effects as an integral element of cinematic expression and storytelling,” said Ves board chair Mike Chambers. “We see this as an important opportunity for our members, leading visual effects practitioners worldwide, to pay homage to our heritage and help shape the future of the global visual effects community. For the second year in a row, a “Star Wars” movie leads all films at the Visual Effects Society Awards nominations with seven nods: “Rogue One” has done just as “The Force Awakens” did a year ago, followed closely by “Doctor Strange” and “The Jungle Book,” both of which scored six. All of them were bested by “Game of Thrones,” however, which scored 11 nominations.
“The artistry, ingenuity and passion of visual effects practitioners around the world have come together to create truly remarkable imagery in a variety of media,” said Mike Chambers, Ves Chair, in a statement. “We are seeing best in field work that elevates the art of storytelling and engages the audience in new and innovative ways. The Ves Awards is the only venue that showcases and honors these outstanding artists across a wide range of disciplines, and we are extremely proud of all our nominees!”

Unionization and the creation of a trade association topped the priorities at a visual effects biz town hall meeting Thursday in Los Angeles where hundreds of VFX professionals gathered to discuss the state of their troubled industry. Despite calls for solidarity within the global community and a general sense of accord, a tense volley of boos erupted halfway through the panel when Visual Effects Society rep Mike Chambers took the mic and mentioned the organization’s call for larger California subsidies made in an open letter last month. In the letter the Ves had announced plans to hold a VFX Congress, which has yet to materialize. “What are you going to do?” shouted one audience member to Chambers, who had no answer for his group. The Hollywood Reporter announced this morning that Inception had triumphed with the most prestigious honour at the annual Visual Effects Society Awards. Inception won four prizes including the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual-Effects Driven Feature Motion Picture which might just be the most awkwardly titled awards category of all time! The award was shared between Paul Franklin (Visual Effects Supervisor), Chris Corbould (special effects supervisor), Mike Chambers (Visual Effects Producer) and Matthew Plummer.
Franklin and Corbould also collaborated together on The Dark Knight and we spoke to Franklin late last year about his work on Inception;
The award has been in existence since 2002 and historically the winners have gone on to achieve Oscar success on all but two occasions and hopefully Inception will go on to do the same in this category. The film did little for me emotionally but the visuals were simply sublime and the perfect example...
