A graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis (Class of 1927), he retired from the United States Navy with the rank of Rear Admiral. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions as commander of the submarine USS Sculpin (SS-191) in February of 1942. He received a gold star for his Navy Cross for continued heroic actions as commander of the USS Sculpin later in 1942.
