When
George W. Bush was looking for a Vice Presidential running mate, he gave Cheney--who was a power in the right-wing of the Republican party--a
list of names of potential nominees and asked him to pick who he thought was the best man for the job. Several days later, Cheney came back and told Bush that, after going over the list, he decided that he, himself, and not any of the men on Bush's list, should be Vice President. Bush acquiesced.
