Growing up, I knew Sarah Polley as both Beverly Cleary's lively, imaginative heroine, Ramona Geraldine Quimby in the 1980s "Ramona" TV series, and then as the equally spirited Sara Stanley on the '90s Canadian (and Disney Channel) TV period drama staple, "Road to Avonlea." Nowadays, of course, Polley is better known for her celebrated efforts as a writer-director on the relationship dramas "Away from Her" and "Take This Waltz." Her latest venture behind the camera, "Women Talking," has even secured a Best Picture nod at the 2023 Academy Awards ceremony, in addition to landing Polly a nomination for her adapted screenplay.
Based on Miriam Toews' 2018 novel of the same name (which was itself inspired by horrifying real-life events), "Women Talking" takes place in an isolated Mennonite colony circa 2010. Photo: Beverly Cleary Cleary’s Life, Remembered Hollywood Insider would like to send our condolences to Beverly Cleary's family - Rest in Peace! Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon in April of 1916. She grew up on a humble farmstead, gaining an adamant love for books when her mother set up a local library in town. When she was a child, Cleary was placed in her school’s “low reading circle” for having trouble with grammar – an experience that ultimately gave her empathy for the struggling readers that would later consume her own books. Of course, she eventually overcame the learning hurdle, becoming an unstoppable force in the process. Cleary went on to study at the University of California Berkeley and the University of Washington before ultimately beginning her authorship of children’s books. Meet Ramona the pest and Beezus, her perpetually annoyed but supportive older sister. Better yet, meet the movie about the two of them that assembled an impressively all-star cast to bring Beverly Cleary's classic children's novels to life. The 2010 film Ramona and Beezus takes quite a few liberties with Cleary's 1970s-era universe, which featured the middle-class Quimby family, friends and relatives dealing with life's everyday challenges in Portland, Ore. Namely, it updates the setting to the 21st century and the social mores of the day aren't quite so old-fashioned. But the heart of the stories, about family and sticking together when times are tough...

Happy birthday, Beverly Cleary! The author turns 100 today, and what better way to celebrate by thinking of all the ways her 100 years on earth have influenced all our lives. Author of the Ramona Quimby series, Cleary made life for a kid a lot easier knowing that her own protagonist, Ramona, had lived through childhood's many ups and downs, including bullying, sibling rivalry and more. In honor of Cleary's big day, let's look back at the 10 lessons she taught us growing up. But let's be honest, these life lessons are as relevant as ever. 1. When we say "Ramona," who do you think of — the spunky tomboy from Beverly Cleary's young-adult novels, or the shit-stirring socialite from The Real Housewives of New York City? The answer probably depends on your age (or the amount of pinot grigio in your bloodstream), but the two ladies have more in common than you might think. Both balance outrageous antics with moments of real poignancy, and with the release on Tuesday of her new memoir Life on the Ramona Coaster, Ramona Singer is finally joining Ramona Quimby on bookshelves everywhere. We couldn’t help but ask ourselves, then: If presented with quotes from Cleary’s timeless books and Singer’s memoir, would we be able to differentiate between the two outspoken and fearless females? It might be more difficult than you think.

I may not have read any Beverly Cleary when I was a child, but Roald Dahl was a big part of my childhood. The book I connected with the most of his was The Bfg, which today remains one of my favorite books of all time. I still have the first copy of it I ever bought, with my last name sloppily written on it (I was a kid, my handwriting's gotten slightly better). I have been waiting for the chance to see this story on the big screen pretty much all of my life. I know there is a 1989 TV film version, but that is the small screen and, therefore, does not count. Well, Steven Spielberg will be the one to bring us the adaptation, and he has found his Big Friendly Giant in three-time Tony Award winner Mark Rylance. I, for one, could not be more thrilled with this decision.

I didn’t read comics as a kid. At all. Ever. Then, one year, someone gave my brother a copy of The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes. I remember picking it up, idly, when I was bored, and getting hooked. As a full-grown adult, I’ve gotten my fair share of dubious looks and halfhearted utterances regarding my young-adult reading habits—“Oh, yeah, you like Harry Potter? So does my 8-year-old nephew!” “Sisterhood of the Traveling … ha-ha-ha-ha.” I’ve heard the behind-the-back jibes as well as the to-my-face criticisms that adult fans of Ya are stuck in some sad adolescent existence and, quite possibly, bringing down the collective Iq of our nation by reading below our grade level. Or that we’re just weird.Much of the Ya I read in my youth consisted of the foundational Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary books, stories that everyone I knew read. There were also the later books in Maud Hart Lovelace’s “Betsy-Tacy” series, and, most especially, Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, though they weren’t technically Ya, having been released before that classification really came into being, in the late sixties.

Principal photography has begun on Christopher Nolan’s much anticipated next chapter in his vision for Batman The Dark Knight Rises, but that doesn’t the mean the casting process is by any means done.
Variety is reporting that five more have been added to the roster of The Dark Knight Rises, one of whom is a well-known name that should be familiar to audiences: Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket, Transporter 2) has been tapped to play a character named ‘Nixon’. Details of the role and the size of it are still under wraps for the time being as is expected for a Nolan/Dark Knight film. .
Oscar nominee Tom Conti for 1983’s Reuben, Reuben adds some class to the cast and joining the vets is junior actress Joey King (star of the Beverly Cleary novel adaptation Ramona & Beezus). The extent of their involvement is also under wraps.

For nearly as long as there's been talking cinema, the first voices added to flickering scenes reeled out to astounded audiences in picture houses, child stars have won the hearts of moviegoers. And why not? So often depicted as angelic, perfect versions of what childhood should be, singing and causing well-intentioned trouble, Hollywood's young leads became everyone's sons and daughters, little sisters and best friends.
The tradition, perhaps most originally and still best embodied by 30's curly-cued Shirley Temple, has now, it seemed, been handed down to Joey King. First seen in summer 2010's "Ramona & Beezus," embodying that good-intentioned youngster in the Beverly Cleary book adaptation, she's now found her way into two of the biggest films being cast in Hollywood.
All at the age of 11.

Last summer I was assigned to screen and review Ramona and Beezus, an adaptation of Beverly Cleary's beloved novels. While I ended up not really liking the movie as a whole, I made special notice of Joey King in my review, who I saw as a child actor filled to the brim with charisma and destined to do great things. Turns out that she is well on her way. On Friday it was announced that the young actress will play a part in Christoper Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises and now she's landed yet another highly coveted role. Variety reports that King will play China Girl in Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great And Powerful. In the story, the character, who is made entirely of porcelain, sees her entire family destroyed by the evil witch Evanora (played by Rachel Weisz). Feeling sorry for her, Oz (James Franco) takes her...

Just a few days after the launch of the official “The Dark Knight Rises” website and big reveal of Tom Hardy as Bane, more news about the next Batman movie has broken. Three new actors have been added to the cast, though we’re only told the role of one of them.
According to Variety, Matthew Modine, Tom Conti and Joey King are all onboard Christopher Nolan’s final Batman production. Modine, whose credits include “Full Metal Jacket” and “Any Given Sunday,” has been cast to play a character named Nixon. Ironically, Modine played a character named “Joker” in “Full Metal Jacket.”
However, it’s unknown who or what Conti and King will be playing in "The Dark Knight Rises."
Scottish actor Conti was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards for “Reuben, Reuben” and has been on Broadway in addition to films. Eleven-year-old King may be a relative newcomer to the acting scene,...

Wizards of Waverly Place star, Selena Gomez will star in a film adaptation of the young adult novel, titled 13 Reasons Why.
The whole thing is based on a book with the same title written by Jay Asher, and Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures purchased the rights to story especially for Selena! Can you believe that?
The story centers on a timid California teenager who returns home from school to find a box with seven cassette tapes recorded by his crush, Hannah Baker, who recently committed suicide.
The tapes were given to one student before her death, with instructions to pass them along to 13 students, much like a chain letter. The cassettes explain how each of the 13 people played a part in her suicide.
A director hasn’t been attached at this time and it isn’t clear when production will start. Eric Newman and Marc Abraham will produce through...

Selena Gomez is one of Disney's hottest television stars, and now she's looking to become a bona fide movie star. She made her big-screen debut last year in the Beverly Cleary adaptation "Ramona and Beezus" and co-stars alongside "Gossip Girl" star Leighton Meester and "Glee" star Cory Monteith in this summer's "Monte Carlo". Now Deadline.com is reporting that she's lined up her next role.
Universal Studios is developing Jay Asher's young adult novel "13 Reasons Why" into a starring vehicle for Gomez. It will be her first time as the lead actress in a film, though rumor has it she'll have plenty of backup help.

Flicks on 6
This week Jeff Bayer has two wide releases and two smaller films to review. First up is the exorcist film, “The Rite” starring Anthony Hopkins (though he doesn’t show up for the first half hour). Next up is the action flick “The Mechanic,” which has a mean streak and stars Jason Statham and Ben Foster. Then, up for Best Animated Film is “The Illusionist,” and nominated for two Oscars is “Biutiful” starring Javier Bardem. Then it’s all about the Oscars.
Here’s a list of movies to get you ready for the 83rd Academy Awards (if you only have a little time, see the ones that have a star next to them):
In theaters
127 Hours
Biutiful
Black Swan*

Another young-adult fantasy novel is on it’s way to become the next best Hollywood project.
At least, that’s exactly what guys at Mandalay Pictures think about Sophie Jordan‘s Firelight.
So here’s the big news for today – Ramona and Beezus scribe Nick Pustay has been tapped to adapt this fantasy novel that has quite interesting description:
“….Jacinda is extraordinary–even for a draki (descendants of dragons who can shift into human form): she is a fire-breather.
Unique and invaluable to her “pride,” the 16-year-old is kept on a short leash, and it has already been ordained that she will mate with the alpha male, Cassian.
Jacinda’s determination to do things her own way finds her nearly captured by dragon hunters, but a surprisingly kind young hunter named Will allows her to escape. Rather than suffer the pride’s punishment for her daughter’s risky behavior,...

Ramona and Beetlejuice? Now that would.ve been interesting. However, Beverly Cleary.s rambunctious creation Ramona springs to life in this big screen adaptation. It.s a great time for the whole family. Ramona Quimby (Joey King) is a rambunctious third grader, the bane of her teacher Mrs. Meacham (Sandra Oh), living on Klickitat Street. She lives with her older sister Beatrice .Beezus. (Selena Gomez), baby sister Roberta (Aila and Zanti McCubbing), mom Dorothy (Bridget Moynahan), and dad Robert (John Corbett). Beezus was the unfortunate nickname bestowed upon Beatrice by the baby Ramona and there.s no love lost because of it. Beezus is always trying to impress Henry (Hutch Dano) but Ramona seems to accidentally sabotage those encounters. The Quimby.s live next door...

Henry Huggins, Ribsy the dog, Otis Spofford, Ellen Tebbits, Beezus or Beatrice Quimby, Picky-Picky the cat, and of course Ramona Quimby, all names that stir up fond childhood memories for many of us. Beverly Cleary.s books have been loved by several generations of children. Now Ramona and Beezus.s story is a new film that will delight families as a movie that everyone can watch and enjoy. What a great stocking stuffer or holiday gift for girls five to fifteen, or for the family as a whole, or for anyone who has ever had or ever been a sister. Ramona doesn.t mean to get into trouble. Even when she does things for the right reasons, she seems to have...

The poster for Ramona and Beezus is a little deceiving. On it, Ramona Quimby (Joey King) and her older sister Beezus (Selena Gomez), hug, smile, and look directly at the viewer as if posing for the world’s most processed family portrait, practically an advertisement for clean clothes and smiling. Not misleading, perhaps, but not reflective of the emotional range of either the film or these two particular characters, who are for the most part faithful to Beverly Cleary’s original novels. The film conveys that same spirit; however, it does not seem fully comfortable with it, dressing up its proceedings with all the trappings of a sitcom and thus blunting some of the Ramona Quimby’s inherent personality. It’s a shame, because given the amount of cnergy and cheer already on display, one can’t help but feel that the film missed an opportunity to reach outside of...

Chicago – With junk like “Marmaduke” and “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” pitching themselves to children like bad fast food, it can be hard for an honestly-good and genuine family film to find an audience. “Ramona and Beezus” is the kind of family offering that will hopefully find a large audience on Blu-ray and DVD. It’s no classic and far from perfect but it’s definitely a success for its target audience that could surprisingly appeal to people outside of its demographic as well.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
A film like “Ramona and Beezus” must satisfy two major requirements for this critic. One, unlike most Hollywood family films, don’t talk down to your audience. Writer Beverly Cleary, the author of this film’s source material, is a multi-generational icon because she refused to write fart jokes, simple moral messages, and slapstick. There's plenty of stuff hitting DVD and Blu-ray today, some of it "game changing", and some of it not so much. The two major new releases this week are Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (trying to make up for its weak theatrical run) and Adam Sandler's Grown Ups (simply adding to its coffers), but we've also got Charlie St. Cloud starring Zac Efron, Beverly Cleary's Ramona and Beezus, and Love Ranch starring Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci. For the more adventurous, Criterion unleashes Lars Von Trier's controversial Antichrist on DVD and Blu-ray, and the large assortment of television releases include Season 1 of BBC's Sherlock, the third seasons of Californication, The Boondocks and Metalocalypse, and a 25th Anniversary Collection of The Golden Girls that comes in Sophia's purse! Amazing. What will you be buying or renting this week? Scott Pilgrim vs. The World [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Grown Ups...

Updated from a series of popular American children's books by Beverly Cleary, the first one published more than 50 years ago, there's something almost Victorian about this wholesome family comedy centring on the 11-year-old Ramona, as lovably troublesome as Twain's Tom Sawyer, and as thoughtful and well-meaning as Pollyanna. Charmingly played by newcomer Joey King, she rows with her elder sister and gets into all kinds of scrapes in Portland, Oregon. Dad's brief unemployment as a consequence of downsizing provides a little topicality.

Easy A (15)
(Will Gluck, 2010, Us) Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Patricia Clarkson. 92 mins
There's always room for a smart-mouthed high-school comedy in a Juno/Mean Girls vein – it's just a pity they come along so rarely. This doesn't quite make that grade but it aims for it, tackling issues of virginity and sluttishness through the story of a nice girl who lies about who she's laid and suffers the fallout – especially from the Jesus freaks.
Carlos (15)
(Olivier Assayas, 2010, Fra/Ger) Edgar Ramírez, Alexander Scheer. 159 mins/334 mins
The life of the terrorist serves as a thrilling survey of cold war-era geopolitics in Assayas's swift, stylish, serious biopic, which covers a staggering amount of ground. See feature, p10.
Red (12A)
(Robert Schwentke, 2010, Us) Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren. 111 mins
Senior-citizen assassin comedy that gets away with a lot thanks to its cast. As a ride, it's more stairmaster than a rollercoaster.

In news sure to set the hearts of 30-somethings soaring, the magnificent Judy Blume announced that she was adapting one of her lesser classics, Tiger Eyes, for the big screen and that her son, Lawrence Blume, would direct the film.
