- Contrary to the Warren Commission, he never believed he was hit with the same bullet that went through President Kennedy. His wife Nellie, first lady Jackie Kennedy and several witnesses all agreed with him. According to Secret Service agent Clint Hill, the commission (which eventually came up with the 'single-bullet theory') did NOT testify the two agents riding behind the President's car that saw two shots hit the President and a separate one hit Connally.
- Was originally picked by President Richard Nixon to succeed Spiro Agnew as Vice-President (under terms of the 25th amendment to the constitution). He refused the offer and it eventually went to Gerald Ford.
- Wounded during the assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy in Dallas in 1963.
