“Doctor Who” fans have something exciting to celebrate this holiday season: After a year-long break, the BBC series is back for a Christmas special titled, “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.” Airing on Christmas Day on BBC America, the superhero-themed episode will follow the Doctor as he teams up with a mysterious vigilantek The Ghost (Justin Chatwin), and a reporter (Charity Wakefield) to save New York City. What’s more festive than that?
To hold you over until it airs, here are three books every fan should have in their collection.
“‘Doctor Who’: A History of Humankind: The Doctor’s Official Guide”
Through his billions of years of time travel, the Doctor has met some of history’s most famous figures. This guide gives his honest (perhaps, at times, too honest) take on all of those important people.

Starz’s pirate drama “Black Sails” has already won the Emmy, in its first season, for supporting VFX. But the show outdid itself this season, creating a hurricane that took the effects to a new level of craftsmanship. “Black Sails,” the “Treasure Island” prequel created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine (starring Toby Stephens as Captain Flint) featured a breathtaking 18-minute, 250-shot sequence that was also enhanced by the sound editing, which grabbed a nom as well.
CG water was the biggest challenge, creating liquid that was believable yet drove the animation of the ship as an integration of elements. The VFX was mostly done by Digital Domain with assistance from Ilp (additional sails) and Crazy Horse Effects (matte painting).
“We looked at live-action footage of water in storms to study the multiple elements: the swells, the surface turbulence and white spray,” said production VFX supervisor Erik Henry. “Then...

To end a week celebrating New Who's 10th birthday, here's a bumper list of Doctor Who titbits from Russell T Davies' The Writer's Tale...
We’ve touched on why The Writer’s Tale, the 2008 (expanded in 2010) compendium of correspondence between Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies and journalist Benjamin Cook, deserves a space on your bookshelf here.
In short, The Writer’s Tale is both a screenwriting masterclass and an unparalleled look behind the scenes of new Doctor Who. As well as following the production triumphs and emergencies as the show lurches “from one crisis to another”, it lets you witness story ideas being created in the wild. See pivotal Doctor Who moments tottering unsurely out of Davies’ mind like new-born giraffes and watch them transform into sleek, galloping beasts of majesty! Think of it like a classy David Attenborough doc on storytelling, with bonus David Tennant photos and chat about Tony from Skins.

Anyone with an interest in screenwriting and/or Doctor Who most likely already has a copy of A Writer’s Tale, a book composed of Russell T. Davies and Benjamin Cook’s email correspondence over Davies’ final two years as the Doctor Who showrunner. If they haven’t, then they need one. It’s that simple.
Of the many things A Writer’s Tale has to offer (how often does an opportunity come along to follow the million-miles-a-minute whirr of a creative brain commenting on its workings with honesty and humour?), one gem in particular is contained in the final pages of its extended 2010 reprint.

You’d think Russell T Davies went into the fourth series of resurrected Doctor Who brimming with confidence. A daft sci-fi show which had only ever enjoyed a cult following brought back from the brink and propelled into a three-series streak of mainstream popularity under his pen. Newborn spin offs had expanded the Whoniverse and found success in their own rights, uniting old and new fan alike. This quirky relic of a bygone era now dominating Saturday evenings as BBC One’s flagship show. Surely, he must’ve felt, Russell T Davies could do no wrong! Actually, it’s a little more complicated than that.
Luckily for us, Davies entered into a near-daily dialogue with young journalist and Doctor Who Magazine contributor Benjamin Cook from February 2007 onwards, detailing his time orchestrating the Whoniverse. By this point, he was easing Torchwood into a second series and kicking off the Sarah...

In October 2014, New Form Digital--the studio run by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Discovery Communications--produced 14 short films across YouTube. Each short was helmed by a different channel or content creator, and the result was a diverse selection that spanned from comedy to horror to sci-fi.
Now, New Form is looking to spotlight ten more filmmaking from the YouTube community and beyond. At Digital Entertainment World, it announced the second round of its Incubator Series and revealed the creators who will participate.
As with the first round of Incubator projects, the list of YouTubers collaborating with New Form is a mixed bag. Some, like Wong Fu Productions and Lisa Schwartz, are hugely successful YouTubers with seven-digit subscriber counts and nine-digit view counts. Others, like Ben Cook and Emily Diana Ruth, run comparatively smaller YouTube operations.
All the participants can be seen in a short teaser video provided by New Form.

Syfy continues to ramp up its slate of new scripted dramas with a straight-to-series order for space opera project "The Expanse," based on the book series by James S.A. Corey, it was announced today by Syfy President Dave Howe.
The 10-episode order is Syfy’s boldest new series commitment to date. "The Expanse" is produced by Alcon Television Group (Atg), a division of Alcon Entertainment, and marks the company’s first series order.
"The Expanse" does sound a lot more sci-fi than horror so we probably won't be covering it much more but thought fans of the books would certainly be interested in the news about the series, which follows.

You don’t need to be told yet again you how YouTube has changed the course of our lives and modern society in just under a decade. And you certainly don’t need to be told that the landscape of television and film has been changed by the internet, what with streaming and independent distribution changing how we watch film and the fact that the likes of Netflix and Amazon are producing their own original content like House of Cards and Arrested Development.
YouTube launched Comedy Week to much fanfare recently, but it received a mixed reception since seemed like it was trying to recreate television by rehashing old favourites and promoting itself with big-name stars like Ricky Gervais and Arnold Schwarzengger. YouTube is still young, but it is its own unique thing- it should be developing what it does now, not trying to fit into the mold of an...

If you’ve heard of this, it’s probably because you heard Fucked Up guitarist Ben Cook is a part of it. That much is true. Depending on what websites you read, you may have also heard that this band, Marvelous Darlings, brandishes “Yellow Pills-worthy hooks shot through with an extra dose of snottiness” or is “killer shit” that “walks the lines between garage, powerpop, and punk.” That last statement is true, about the line-walking, but the hooks are largely absent, and that’s a major problem. A cursory glance at the finest purveyors of this type of music, from Gentleman Jesse to...

Welcome to the first edition of a new column featuring a Toronto band for every month. We’re pleased to start it off with Army Girls, a two-piece who will release their first Ep, Close to the Bone, on September 13 through the Blocks Recording Club. Army Girls is Carmen Elle and Andy Smith. They’re not new to the scene by any means; Carmen’s been involved with bands such as Donlands and Mortimer (yes, named after a Toronto intersection) as well as Austra, and Andy’s also in Heartbeat Hotel. But the forces have come together to bring us an ear-pleasing new combo.
With Carmen on guitar and vocals and Andy on drums, the pair pack a whopping punch. Carmen’s vocals make her sound like she’s been transported through time to an era of old movies, but she’s got the confidence to take her to another level.

In a low- to mid-seven-figure deal, Sony Pictures Animation has picked up the rights to "The Familiars," an upcoming children's fantasy book series written by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson.
Sam Raimi and Josh Donen are in negotiations to produce via their Stars Road Entertainment banner. Epstein and Jacobson also will write the script.
The writers pitched the idea to their reps at UTA and H2F Entertainment, who believed -- given the current marketplace that favors having an IP like a comic book or book behind a project -- that going the book route would be better than simply going out with a pitch. The approach also would give the duo an opportunity to make tracks as novelists.
