There have been several reasons for cinephiles to rejoice in 2023, but few are more exciting than the return of Michael Mann.

Do you like the Star Wars franchise? How about the new version of Dune? And what about Avatar, The Matrix, Starship Troopers, Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones? And also: Westerns, samurai movies, Inglourious Basterds, ancient mythology (Greek, Roman, and a smattering of Eastern), the Dungeons & Dragons monsters’ manual, those old-school Roger Dean album covers, Frank Frazetta’s paintings, Hideo Kojima’s video games, James Fenimore Cooper’s “Leatherstocking Tales,” the collected works of Robert Heinlein and Piers Anthony, and six out of the nine short stories...

Among all working U.S. filmmakers, few have built as faithful and fervent a following of critics and cinephiles as Michael Mann. Mann’s acolytes have secured such sleekly hard-boiled genre works as “Thief” and “Heat” a permanent place in the American canon, while staunchly advocating for the merits of more divisive titles like “Blackhat” and “Miami Vice” — the latter, released to mixed reviews and moderate box office in 2006, today attracts reverent crowds at repertory screenings. Such is the power of Mann’s men (and women): At 80, Mann has made just 12 films in a career spanning five decades, but his legacy is wholly secure.
The Academy, however, has never quite joined the cult. Only once has a Mann film connected with a wide swath of Oscar voters: That would be 1999’s scorching Big Tobacco takedown “The Insider,” a box-office disappointment that nonetheless boasted enough artistry and gravitas to land seven nominations,...

This post contains spoilers for "Avatar: The Way of Water."
While James Cameron's 2009 film "Avatar" was visually dazzling, and pushed movie special effects to new highs, one can find many, many flaws in its story. Most notably, "Avatar" can serve as a tired a trite "White man goes native" narrative, left over from the days of American colonialist fantasies by James Fenimore Cooper. Plenty of feature films have repeated the trope in the past, of course, with "Lawrence of Arabia," "Dances with Wolves," "Pocahontas," and "The Last Samurai" being more prominent examples.
The main character in "Avatar" is Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a jarhead Marine whose twin brother was given the enviable, off-world assignment to the distant planet of Pandora, occupied by a race of nine-foot-tall, blue-skinned forest-dwelling aliens called the Na'vi. In order to survive on the planet, humans have mixed their own DNA with Na'vi DNA and...

In James Cameron's 2009 film "Avatar," Sam Worthington plays Jake Sully, a jarhead military man who is capable at tactics and little else. When his consciousness is shunted into the body of a nine-foot cloned Na'vi, and he goes out onto an alien world to learn the Na'vi ways, he finds his mind expanding, and his hatred for the human world increasing. By the end of the film, he moves into his alien body permanently to live a vaunted position among them. The story is something straight out of James Fenimore Cooper, with Jake Sully fulfilling a well-worn "going native" role favored in a certain subgenre of colonialist fiction.
Jake Sully isn't a terribly sophisticated character, which may be kind of the point. It wouldn't be until the release of "Avatar: The Way of Water," where Jake is now 13 years older but still a military-minded guy, that he would reveal the consistency of his character.

Michael Mann’s films turn on the fulcrum of historical upheaval. Sometimes that upheaval is imminent; sometimes it has already happened. In either case his characters are precision-tuned to reflect it, existing within an exact moment in time that violently disrupts their worldview and forces them to reconsider their very methods of being. Personal ideals are often overshadowed by realpolitik—cold, clinical systems that rely on dehumanization to function.
The Last of the Mohicans, adapted from James Fenimore Cooper’s 1826 novel of the same name, stands among the purest distillations of Mann’s narrative rigor. Though an aesthetic departure—his signature glittering skylines and rain-slicked city streets are replaced with the verdant wilderness of colonial Albany—the film is every bit as concerned, if not more so, with the cosmic ebb and flow of change, the individuals swept up in it. Its fluctuating scope is laid bare in its two opening intertitles: “1757. The American colonies.

Some say getting away from it all is a great way to recover from stress, and no one does it quite like Daniel Day-Lewis. For his next film role after his very public breakdown on stage during a performance of "Hamlet," the famously intense actor took himself off to the wilderness to prepare for "The Last of the Mohicans."
Day-Lewis is well known for his commitment to method acting. Prior to taking on the role of Nathaniel "Hawkeye" Poe in Michael Mann's dashing adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's historical yarn, he had stayed in character to portray Christy Brown in "My...

From his office window, attorney Jon Katz has a direct view of the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia, and for the past several weeks, he has watched fans gathering outside to catch a glimpse of Johnny Depp.
The trial pitting the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, is the biggest case Katz can recall in 20 years of practicing criminal defense in the area. He also does free-speech work — clients have included strip clubs, adult toy shops and the Westboro Baptist Church — so he has a professional stake in the outcome.
“I want a verdict against both of them,” he says.
Depp and Heard are suing each other for defamation. Depp alleges that Heard destroyed his career when she accused him of domestic violence. She is countersuing over his claim that her allegations are a hoax.

"The Last of the Mohicans" is a potboiler written by James Fenimore Cooper and published in 1826. It tells the tale of Natty Bumppo, a white man raised by Native Americans who goes on rollicking adventures across the frontier. "The Last of the Mohicans" is book two of a five-part series, like if "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" was spectacularly boring and also required reading for American students. Yet it has been adapted to film and television many times. George B. Seitz directed a version in 1936. Michael Mann, legendary director of "Heat" and "Miami Vice," directed his own version...

Murray and musician friends Jan Vogler and Vanessa Perez perform a sprightly investigation into civilisation with droll readings and awful singing (from him)
Maybe you had to be there. There is something extravagant and irresistible about the idea of an old-fashioned cultural evening of musical and spoken-word performance. Hollywood legend Bill Murray does the droll literary readings and occasionally some awful singing, and he’s joined musically by his friends: cellist Jan Vogler and violinist Mira Wang (married to Vogler), with Vanessa Perez on the piano. James Fenimore Cooper, Hemingway and James Thurber are among those being read and Gershwin and Schubert among those performed.
This is the filmed record of the final night of this show’s world tour on the Acropolis stage in Athens: their curated performance being a sprightly, tongue-in-cheek homage to civilisation itself. It’s an elegant, eccentric evening in many ways and maybe only Murray...

In the birthplace of Western philosophy, Bill Murray dropped some wisdom on a receptive audience.
“I swear to you,” he told the crowd in Athens, quoting Walt Whitman, “there are divine things more beautiful than words can tell.”
Divine things, like the music of Bach, Shostakovich and Ravel, the melodies of Gershwin and Bernstein, the songs of Stephen Foster and Van Morrison.
For one magical evening in 2018, on terrain once walked by Socrates and Plato, Murray was joined by cellist Jan Vogler, violinist Mira Wang, and pianist Vanessa Perez for a concert combining music and poetry. The film New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization captures that performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus near the Acropolis, the culmination of a tour that took the quartet to Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, the U.S., and across Europe to their final date in Greece.

Before the streaming service became a household name, we would use that coveted remote to scroll through daytime soap operas, news channels, and whatever fascinating-sounding show they were airing on The Discovery Channel. Netflix’s new docuseries, ‘Spycraft’, feels as though it has been pulled right out of that final category. The show consists of eight, dense, well-researched episodes that each focus on a different area in the craft of espionage. Detailing the years from World War I until today, the show is an engaging combination of expert interviews, reenactments, and archival footage all expertly cut to move the pace along without ever losing its audience. We're ready to round out today's entertainment news.
We have news about a TV series reboot, a movie franchise to television project, and a whole lot more.
Let's dig in!
First up, it appears Greg Berlanti has no desire to slow down.
He's getting back into business with ABC with Riverdale creator Ricardo Aguirre-Sacasa, the latter of which is working on getting as prolific with Berlanti.
They're developing a new series based on the Brides of Dracula called "The Brides."
Interestingly, this isn't the first time a Brides of Dracula-based series has been considered, and it's not even the first time This series has been on the table.
Described by ABC as a vampire soap about empowered, immortal women and the things they do to maintain wealth, prestige, legacy -- and their nontraditional family, a show with the same logline was offered to NBC five years ago.
While that didn't go forward,...

“Wolf Hall” producer Playground is developing a series for the BBC based on James Fenimore Cooper’s historical series of novels known collectively as the “Leatherstocking Tales,” which includes “The Last of the Mohicans.”
Playground, run by former HBO exec Colin Callender, is working on a pilot script for the project, which is being set up as a returning series. “The Last of the Mohicans” is the second and most famous of Fenimore Cooper’s five-book series and has been adapted for the big screen several times, including the 1992 film by Michael Mann starring Daniel Day-Lewis.
The stories are set between 1740 and 1806, and chronicle life among Native Americans and white pioneers on the New York State frontier. Their world is on the cusp of change, and the struggle between the British and French to take control of the region forms a high-stakes political backdrop. The novels’ hero is Hawk-Eye, who...

“The Last of the Mohicans” is being adapted yet again, this time for television by Cary Fukunaga. Currently at work on “Bond 25,” the “True Detective” and “Maniac” helmer is teaming with Nicole Kassell (who’s also directing the “Watchmen” pilot for HBO) to bring James Fenimore Cooper’s novel to Paramount Television. Fukunaga will co-write with Nicholas Osborne, with Kassel directing. Deadline first broke the news.
“The clash of civilizations during the Seven Years War, which frames the story of Last of the Mohicans, has been a long-time passion of mine,” Fukunaga said in a statement. “It was a world war before the term even existed. The opportunity to recreate the story’s strong-willed and free-thinking characters, with talents including Nick Osborne and Nicole Kassell, is incredibly exciting to me. Together with Paramount TV and Anonymous Content, we have the chance to revive the forgotten ancestors that define American identity today.

Hearts of Darkness: Guerra’s Exceptional Exploration of Ruinous Colonialization
Colombian director Ciro Guerra charts an enigmatic narrative of parallel odysseys through the Amazon with his third feature, Embrace of the Serpent is no less intimate in its rendering of human interaction than previous films The Wandering Shadows (2004) and The Wind Journeys (2009), Guerra’s stark allegory of the extinction of indigenous cultures at the hands of well-meaning but ignorant white Europeans is powerfully resonant in this gorgeously shot film, touted as the first feature to be shot in the Colombian jungle in over three decades.

Just a bunch of random thoughts this week, gang…
As I mentioned two weeks ago, Martha Thomases and I go waaaay back to the days when she was DC’s go-to woman for marketing and promotions and I was a naive, newbie freelance writer for the company who always stuck my head in her doorway (“hey, Martha”) whenever I was in the office. We have always been kindred spirits in political thought and our taste in literature, television, and moves have always coincided more than they have diverged, and now Martha’s latest column extends that coincidence to some critics.
Martha, you have more patience than I do; I couldn’t even finish the piece because I got so annoyed. So, yeah, I’m not an A.O. Scott fan, either, although I do think he writes beautifully. In my not-so-humble opinion, Mr. Scott is a bit of a snob and...

Mark Twain once wrote that author James Fenimore Cooper relied so heavily on the plot device of characters making noise by stepping on dry twigs, that if a character couldn’t find a dry twig, he’d have to go borrow one. Writer-director Malcolm D. Lee has his own brand of dry twig in “The Best Man Holiday,” with his cast constantly walking in on exactly the wrong part of an overheard conversation, misreading something on someone else’s phone or tablet, or eavesdropping when they shouldn’t. The tally of significant coincidences and half-heard scraps of information on display here would exhaust even.

Yippee-ki-yay! It's action-movie time! From Die Hard to Deliverance, here's what the Guardian and Observer's critics think are the 10 best ever made. Let us know what you think in the comments below
• Top 10 romantic movies
Peter Bradshaw on action movies
In some ways, it should be the quintessential cinema genre. After all, what does the director shout at the beginning of a take? Action – at times a euphemism for violence and machismo – evolved into a recognisable genre in the 80s. Gunplay and athleticism resurfaced in a sweatier and more explicitly violent form, with movies such as Sylvester Stallone's First Blood. The hardware was all-important, and the metallic sheen of the guns was something to be savoured alongside the musculature of the heroes. The genre spawned the action hero. These were not pretty-boys there to melt female hearts: they were there to get a roar of approval from the guys.

At the end of World War Z, Brad Pitt takes a moment to remind you: “This isn’t the end.” Of course it isn’t. Every big-budget movie Hollywood releases now is not just a movie. It’s also an advertisement for a potential sequel, or spinoff, or alternate-universe prequel-reboot. This has radically altered the rules of big-screen storytelling in a number of ways. But no development is more troubling than the complete demise of the ending. Even the worst movies used to at least attempt to tell complete stories, with character journeys that reach some kind of conclusion and closure.
