David Yates' 2016 film "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" was, true to its title, an odd duck. Set in the same universe as the "Harry Potter" movies, but taking place decades before the title character was born, "Fantastic Beasts" attempted to expand what audiences knew about wizards and witches through the eyes of a humble cryptozoologist.
Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is a mild-mannered animal enthusiast who treks to the United States in the early 1920s in order to, essentially, capture and study rare breeds of Pokémon and write a soon-to-be-standard textbook on them. As in the "Harry Potter" movies, all magical dealings of witches and wizards -- as well as the existence of magical animals -- are kept safely hidden from the prying eyes of us normal, non-magic folk, called muggles.

J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series is responsible for getting an entire generation of kids to read. The "Wizarding World" steadily transformed into an expansive universe that claimed fans across the globe. The success of "Harry Potter" is nothing short of miraculous.
The series would not have been nearly as popular if it wasn't for the pivotal casting decisions made for the first film. Casting young actors for any role isn't easy but deciding on the leads for a franchise that will span a decade is almost unthinkable. However, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson couldn't have been more perfect for their roles as Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. The audience got to grow up with these characters as the actors matured.
As the characters grew up, the films became darker. Harry and his friends are forced to stand against evil and oppression when the Dark Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) rises to power.

After seeing the poster and reading up a little on Bite Me I was expecting a romantic comedy in the vein of Life After Beth or Warm Bodies – obviously replacing the zombies with vampires. But that’s not what Bite Me tries to be.
It’s a much more serious movie than I expected it to be. There is some comedy but things are kept straight for the most part and the romance between a vampire and a human is the main focus of the movie. It’s still not quite the movie that it mentions occasionally (Twilight) but it’s perhaps closer to this type of film.
Real-life vampire Sarah is due an audit, which turns out not so good for her and her vampire pals. At...

Though all seven books have already been used up, there’s always talk of there potentially being more Harry Potter movies down the line. After all, J.K. Rowling did co-write The Cursed Child stage play, which extends the story of the Boy (now Man) Who Lived. Ralph Fiennes, star of the original movies, doesn’t think any more are likely to happen, but if they do, he has one message to other actors: hands off Lord Voldemort.
ComicBook.com caught up with Fiennes at New York Comic-Con and asked him about the possibility of more Potter on the big screen. As part of his answer, the British star made clear that he wants to be the one to get the call to come back and play Harry’s nose-less nemesis.
“I will be very possessive about Voldemort, though. I don’t want anyone else playing Voldemort.”

"It's nobody's fault. And everybody's responsibility." Gravitas Ventures has released the trailer for an indie "surreal mystery" drama titled The Rainbow Experiment, which first premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival (the anti-Sundance fest that takes place at the same time/place) at the beginning of this year. This trailer has been out for a while, but we haven't featured it yet, and the film is opening in just a few weeks. The Rainbow Experiment is about how things spiral out of control in a high school in Manhattan when a terrible accident involving a science experiment injures a kid for life. Starring Christian Coulson, Kevin Kane, Chris Beetem, Vandit Bhatt, Francis Benhamou, and more. Watch the trailer if you're curious. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Christina Kallas' The Rainbow Experiment, from YouTube: The story takes place in a high school where things spiral out of control when...

My biggest takeaway from Christina Kallas’ The Rainbow Experiment is that teachers really don’t get paid enough in this country. Think about new technologies, entitled parents, emotionally confused kids with no outlet, and dwindling budgets forcing them to spend out-of-pocket for resources all while a guillotine hangs above their necks if grade thresholds aren’t met. Suddenly those idealistic educators hoping to change the world find themselves caught in a futile game wherein job security becomes paramount at the children’s expense. Everyone’s back is pressed against the wall as a ticking time bomb threatens to explode … and I’m not even talking about the possibility of someone walking in with a loaded arsenal and grudge to bear. Has today’s stress increased or are we simply too close to it?
Look at the kids too because they have it just as bad. Bullying is no longer isolated...

Google the words “rainbow experiment chemistry” and the internet will provide a wealth of seemingly kid-friendly directives for how to use science to “make a rainbow,” an idea that seems fun enough until another link pops up: a safety alert from the American Chemical Society about an experiment gone very, very wrong.
It’s that sort of tension — between the possibility of academic discovery and out-and-out terror — that frames up Christina Kallas’ Slamdance drama, “The Rainbow Experiment,” which follows what happens after one of those eponymous experiments leads to unexpected consequences, one that indict and unravel whole scores of people and institutions.

On August 16, 2013, I finished the first draft of my second feature film, “Bite Me.” Today, on August 12, 2017, four years and 48 drafts later, I am riding the subway to our first day of production. But the story I am telling begins far earlier and, with any luck, will last far longer.
I have this memory that still guts me when I think about it today. I’m sitting in a movie theater as a middle-schooler and watching “The Princess Diaries.” I’m not sure if you remember that film, but at the beginning the central character played by a young Anne Hathaway is supposed to be a mega-nerd. To indicate the depths of her social pariah-hood, they made Anne wear glasses and frizzed her hair out a bit. But, if you’ve ever seen Anne Hathaway, you can probably imagine that, even in this state, she still, you know, looked like Anne Hathaway.

The Changeling Written by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley Directed by Jesse Berger Red Bull Theater at the Lucille Nortel Theatre, NYC December 26, 2015-January 24, 2016
Ushering in the New Year, Red Bull Theater brings us a tragic tale of sex in payment for murder. Jesse Berger sure-handedly directs Thomas Middleton and William Rowley's 1622 tragicomedy The Changeling, the main plot of which introduces the noble Beatrice-Joanna (Sara Topham) as she finds a "giddy turning" in herself from Alonzo de Piracqo (John Skelley), to whom her father, Vermandero (Sam Tsoutsouvas), intends her to be married, towards Alsemero (Christian Coulson). In order to "change [her] saint," she eventually enlists the aid of her father's servant De Flores (Manoel Feliciano), whom she professes to abhor and whose skin condition suggests a spatter of blood across his face, to remove the obstacle that is Alonzo.

Casting Harry Potter had to have been a little bit like playing Russian Roulette. You’re bringing in a group of largely untested child actors, and praying to the Cinema God that not only will they commit to an eight film series, but that they’ll grow into talented individuals and not get beaten by an ugly stick on their way through puberty. They dodged a bullet with the main trio, with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint all turning out perfectly fine. They’ve got good heads on their shoulders and seem remarkably mature in their ability to pick roles that will work for them as adults.
But what about the rest of the cast? Because they weren’t just casting Harry, Ron, and Hermione — they had a school full of students to fill. So what happens to the actors who are part of such a huge franchise,...

"When you live with people, you know them better than you care to." Sony Pictures Classics has finally debuted the trailer for Ira Sachs' Love is Strange, starring Alfred Molina & John Lithgow as a couple together for 39 years. It really is a beautiful, tender, moving film, which is exactly what I'm quoted saying in the trailer (from this review). While it's very timely in its presentation of an elderly gay couple struggling with society, it's very timeless in the way it talks about love, and how much love always shines through and can teach great lessons. I had planned to see Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with Me last Thursday afternoon, but it was playing the tiny theatre at Alamo Ritz and of course filled up with badges before we folks with passes or ticketbuyers could get in. Danny Boyle currently has his hands full as artistic director of London’s 2012 Olympic Games’ opening ceremony. While I’m sure it will be very impressive, we film geeks are far more interested in what the Mancunian director has lined up as his next big screen project. Enter the thriller Trance, which Boyle looks likely to make in collaboration with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘127 Hours’ producer Christian Coulson.
The limited details released so far state that it will be a thriller centred on an art heist that goes wrong. Penned by British writer Joe Ahearne, the film’s tone has already been described as a dark, sexy, hard-edged affair. One can decipher from this that Boyle is going back to his roots and his 1994 film 'Shallow Grave', which was his feature film directorial debut, immediately springs to mind. If...

It somehow feels like ages since 127 Hours hit theaters. Overshadowed by stronger Best Picture candidates like The Social Network and The King's Speech, not to mention the constant antics of star James Franco, it made a small amount of money, won a collection of fans, and slipped away seemingly unnoticed. And Boyle will be a little under the radar for a while longer, committing himself to direct the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, work that starts next January. But Boyle, never a guy who seemed to particularly care about vacation, is going to manage to squeeze in a film first. According to Deadline he'll star work in September on Trance, a hard-edged thriller more along the lines of his early work like Shallow Grave and Trainspotting. He and his Slumdog Millionaire producer Christian Coulson will reteam, and they're looking into old familiar distributors Fox Searchlight and Pathe for funding...

Despite the fact that he’s been busy this year so far with Frankenstein at the National Theatre, and the fact that he's going to be busy crafting the opening ceremonies to next year’s Olympic Games, Danny Boyle isn’t letting that slow down his prodigious output rate. He’s now setting up Trance to shoot in London later this year.Deadline reports that details are fairly sketchy at this early stage (no idea who’s behind the script, for example), but that the thriller will focus on an art heist gone wrong and looks to return the Mancunian filmmaker to the dark, sexy tone of Shallow Grave. But while it’ll hark back to his roots, it also marks another collaboration with Slumdog/127 Hours producer Christian Coulson. And the Games will have an impact – while Boyle’s launched talks with regular collaborators Fox Searchlight on funding and started...

Congrats to the "Harry Potter" cast for making the top spot in "Extra's" Entertainer of the Year poll!
It makes sense that this enduring, magical franchise would rank the highest, since the books and movies have been entertaining people for over a decade. With the release of the first book, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in 1997, author Jk Rowling spurred the imagination of millions with her fantastical world of witches and wizards, centering on...

HollywoodNews.com: I am writing this blog live from Orlando, where the Harry Potter fan conference Infinitus 2010 is taking taking place this weekend. Fans have traveled from all over the world to attend this event, which will have loads of fun fandom related events, a ball, and a special Infinitus-only event within the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Here is a rundown of today’s highlights:
Thursday
Live Wizard Chess Performance – Similar to the life sized game played in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but more human (and maybe not as barbaric?)
Welcoming Feast – Attendees will be welcomed to Infinitus the Hogwarts way, with a fun-filled feast. This menu is full of Mexican faire, and full menu details can be found here.
Wizard Rock - Wizard Rock is so big, it will be featured not once, but twice on Thursday. Rock out with bands The Butterbeer Experience,...

Plus stand inside an imploding building, Wile E. Coyote is back on the big screen, and why are the Backstreet Boys playing San Francisco Pride?
James Franco has announced yet another role, beyond yesterday’s R-rated comedy and the summer story on General Hospital. He’s going to star as the scientist that raises the apes up to overthrow humanity in the Planet of the Apes sequel. What, Keanu Reeves was busy?
The thought of shooting a documentary about the attendees of San Diego Comic-Con is somewhat intimidating for me, but if I could assemble a dream team of Morgan Spurlock, Thomas Tull, Stan Lee, Joss Whedon and Harry Knowles, I might be willing to try it.
Madonna, who has extensive charitable operations in Malawi, has released a statement calling on the people of Malawi to challenge their government over the 14-year hard labor sentences for Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga.

London -- Film4, the embattled moviemaking unit of U.K. pubcaster Channel 4, is facing leaner times in the months to come as cash from its parent shrinks to fit the current economic malaise.
It means the unit -- which originally optioned and developed Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" with writer Simon Beaufoy adapting novel "Q&A," going on to co-finance the Oscar hopeful with Celador -- will have to find such gems with even less cash backing than its current $15 million annual budget.
Film4 chief Tessa Ross, who has a knack for unearthing such material and an enviable list of talent relationships with filmmakers, says cuts to her annual spend "are inevitable."
Make no mistake, Ross is hugely ambitious for the stable of talent she fiercely guards and develops and is incredibly gung ho about the filmmakers she has.
"I want them (Christian Coulson and the 'Slumdog' team) to win...

London -- Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" dominated this year's Orange British Academy Film Awards, scooping seven awards including best film, director, cinematography and adapted screenplay for writer Simon Beaufoy.
"I've had a complex relationship with this statue," Beaufoy said to a packed Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden. "I have a plastic one that I bought from eBay, a chocolate one that I stole from the dinner one year and now, well ..."
"Slumdog" producer Christian Coulson will be hoping his trip to the podium for the best film nod will be repeated again in a few weeks at the Oscars. The Bafas are presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Mickey Rourke's career rehabilitation continued apace, slamming home the evening's lead actor prize for his performance as a washed-up grappler in "The Wrestler."
The Brits demanded a less gushing acceptance...
