Friday nights are made for Frogman. It’s a full-on fun fest of found footage freak-outs, killer creature design & effects, and hilarious interviews with kooky locals, including one guy who insists: “Frogman fucks”. Friday nights are not made for introspection and heady deep dives down philosophical rabbit holes. Friday nights are ripe for Pizza and Monsters; Beer and Body Horror; Cozy clothes ‘n’ Cryptids!
Frogman is co-written and directed by Anthony Cousins, who horror fans will no doubt recognize from the slasher send-up segments The Night He Came Back Again! Part IV – The Final Kill & The Night He Came Back Again! Part VI: The Night She Came Back of Scare Package (2019) & Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge (2022). Cousins continues his unique brand of horror-obsessed humor through into this new feature, with a forest dwelling monster that would make Bigfoot jealous.

It was only a matter of time before we got a found footage horror film about Ohio’s cryptid oddity, Loveland’s Frogman (that’s not sarcastic; I’ve seen far stranger indie horror concepts). Anthony Cousins’ search for a slimy urban legend (shot almost exclusively on Hi-8), aptly titled Frogman, is a weirdo treat for fans of V/H/S/94‘s “Storm Drain” segment featuring Raatma and other handheld shaky-specials spawned from The Blair Witch Project inspirations. Shades of Willow Creek chase a mythical creature through dense woodland territories as our view bobbles around much like found footage diehards are used to, which won’t win over any motion-sick doubters of the subgenre — even with a third act that doesn’t shy away from noteworthy Frogman effects and an unrelenting sensation of “going there.”

The film is in late post-production for release in 2024. It is produced by Mary Bell and Adam Dawtrey for BofA Productions, and co-funded by the National Lottery via Screen Scotland, with the support of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust. Peyton Manning, LeBron James and Michelle and Barack Obama are looking to team up with Netflix for an NBA docuseries modeled after Quarterback.
Manning’s Omaha Productions and James’s SpringHill Company are in talks to partner up with the Obamas’ Higher Ground Production and the NBA for the series, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
Omaha Productions already produces Quarterback for the streamer in partnership with NFL Films and 2Pm Productions. The series follows football players Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota as they navigate the ups and downs of the NFL season.

When creators of the Netflix docuseries Quarterback selected three NFL playmakers to shadow for the 2022-23 season, they couldn’t possibly be certain that one, Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, would go on to win the Super Bowl; another, the Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins, would have the season of his life; and the third, the Atlanta Falcons’ Marcus Mariota, would be benched, adding a poignant undertone to balance out the triumphalism.
Netflix’s bet on these three quarterbacks paid off handsomely, both narratively and commercially. With 3.3 million views and 21.4 million hours viewed, per the streamer, the series ranked third among original streaming shows (and fifth among all titles) for its opening week, according to Nielsen — showing Netflix can compete in the sports space even without live rights. The quarterbacks themselves also have expressed satisfaction with the end product.

From the Nc-17 ménage à trois of Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Dreamers” to James Spader having intercourse with Rosanna Arquette’s leg wound in David Cronenberg’s “Crash,” producer Jeremy Thomas loves a controversy onscreen.

Just as music is a big part of The Summer I Turned Pretty, the Amazon Prime Video original series’ star, Lola Tung, used it to get into character. What the actor listened to for a fast way to get into Isabel “Belly” Conklin’s “headspace” and what she looked for in songs.

Kim Petras’s “You Can’t Do Better” might’ve blared through the speakers as Belly sang along on the way to Cousins with her brother Steven (Sean Kaufman), and mother Laurel (Jackie Chung) in the Tsitp premiere episode. However, the track may not have made the cut for season 2 based on Tung’s description of her own Belly playlist that helped her get into character.
“It was a lot of slightly more emotional songs — songs that felt nostalgic,” she told The New York Times.

“The Summer I Turned Pretty” has become known for its flashy soundtrack, which accompanies viewers at all moments of the emotional, teenage rollercoaster that viewers board when they start watching. Han has made a point to include as many Taylor Swift songs as possible in this series, but for those who are not Swifties, don’t worry. Only three of the nine total Swift songs used this season made it into this ranking of needle drops. You’re welcome.

“The Summer I Turned Pretty” actress Lola Tung supports the full circle ending of Season 2 for her character Isabel “Belly” Conklin.
Belly has navigated an emotional rollercoaster — from grieving Susannah and feeling isolated from the boys to confronting Conrad after two fallouts with him and then kissing Jeremiah — to reach the final scene of Season 2. Her now boyfriend, Jeremiah, supports her from the bleachers as she makes her case to her high school volleyball coach to let her back on the team. To step inside Sarajevo’s Apollo Cinema 30 years ago, you first had to find the door.
The streets of the Bosnian capital were pitch black. Power cuts brought on by a crippling siege, which started in 1992 when Bosnian Serb forces surrounded the city, left the town plunged in darkness. Residents fortunate enough to own gasoline-powered generators were reluctant to use them, for fear that lights would attract sniper fire. Shelling left giant holes in the streets and pavement. The locals referred to them as “rosebuds.”
The Apollo was housed in the basement of the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts, where the Obala Art Center — a group that had risen to prominence in the 1980s — mounted acclaimed stage productions that traveled around the world. Visitors entered through a hole in the wall ringing the perimeter of the academy, crossed a small courtyard to the building’s back door and descended a steep flight of stairs.

When the Sarajevo Film Festival returned to full strength last year after successive, slimmed-down pandemic editions, a robust turn-out was to be expected. For nearly three decades, the audience-facing event has been the cultural lifeblood of the lively, cosmopolitan city it calls home.
The 2022 edition broke attendance records set in 2019, and just days after its online ticketing system launched this month, the fest appears on pace to surpass that mark again. It is a testament to the enduring love affair between a city and a festival that was founded in impossible circumstances in 1995, at the tail end of a brutal, four-year siege — proof that even in times of war and scarcity, cinema could endure.
The festival returns Aug. 11 – 18, with organizers insisting the event’s 29th edition will stay true to its roots. “We wanted to keep the festival focused on its main goals: presenting the best of cinema today to...

Esteemed character actor Mark Margolis passed away this week at the age of 83, leaving behind a long legacy of memorable film and TV characters. Though while you might remember him from "Scarface," "Oz," or "The Wrestler," it's more likely Margolis' face calls to mind one singularly unforgettable role: Hector Salamanca, the ruthless leader of the Salamanca crime family in the "Breaking Bad" universe.
As Hector, Margolis spent most of his time in a wheelchair with an oxygen cannula in his nose, the character communicating only via a small metal bell like the kind you'd find at a hotel front desk. Despite the fact that his performance was largely non-verbal, communicated through flared nostrils and angry, chiming taps, Margolis actually earned an Emmy nod for his turn as the character in 2012. Newly released Netflix docuseries “Quarterback” takes viewers on an inside look at the lives of some of the league’s most-watched players’ off the gridiron. It’s the latest example of what co-ceo Ted Sarandos called “sports-adjacent” programming on Wednesday’s earnings call, and this one scored big.
Initial viewership of the series proved that football still reigns as an American favorite, and Netflix might not need to pay up for expensive broadcasting rights to profit from the national obsession. A total of 1.1 million households tuned into the premiere episode of the series in its first five days released, according to the latest Wrap Report for the week of July 10-16.

Peyton Manning and Netflix are searching for more quarterbacks to profile in a second season of their NFL docuseries.
Manning, who exec produces Quarterback, which starred Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota, revealed that the streamer had greenlit the series for a second season.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, the Colts legends said, “Season 2 has been greenlit by Netflix, we’re excited, we’re hoping for more quarterbacks, it’s easier to say yes. I don’t want to hear ‘It’s going to be a distraction’ because that’s not true, Patrick Mahomes proved that, Kirk Cousins proved that, Marcus, the way he handled that, proved that. We’re hoping that guys after seeing it say this is going to be a cool thing that I can show to my kids when I’m older, show to my grandkids one day. Hopefully the pitch will be easier.

In this critically agile film, Hitchcock supposedly narrates from beyond the grave, using movie clips to reveal techniques and meanings in his work
Only a cinephile as passionate as Mark Cousins could have got away with this film, in all its hilarious presumption and cheek. It is a study of Alfred Hitchcock’s work, illustrated with clips chosen with tremendous insight and connoisseurship – and supposedly narrated from beyond the grave by Hitchcock himself, pointing out techniques, resonances, images, meanings and occasionally breaking off to check something with Cousins who will answer, off-mic: “Yes Mr Hitchcock.”
However, the script is Cousins’ own and the master himself is faked by the comic Alistair McGowan, whose vocal impersonation is just so eerily good that after a while I thought Cousins really had made this by sitting alone in some darkened Edwardian parlour with his tape recorder and Ouija board. But of course the...

This article contains spoilers for “The Summer I Turned Pretty” Season 2. All interviews with actors were conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike.
It’s not summer without “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”
Prime Video’s hit teen drama has returned for Season 2. The first three episodes, which dropped on July 13, re-introduced its rabid fanbase to the world of 16-year-old Belly Conklin (Lola Tung), who spends summers with her family and friends at an idyllic house in Cousins Beach. Caught in a love triangle between two brothers, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad Fisher (Chris Briney), Belly navigates romance and friendship — and, in Season 2, grief, for the first time.
A New York Times bestselling series written by Jenny Han, “The Summer I Turned Pretty” debuted on Prime Video in 2022, where it became the No. 1 show on the streaming service in its debut weekend. Han is also the co-showrunner of the series, alongside...

“The Summer I Turned Pretty” author Jenny Han puts a new twist on the beloved hot cocoa scene from her second book, “It’s Not Summer Without You,” in Season 2 of the Prime Video series, and the actors were game to take things further. In the show, Conrad (Chris Briney) and Belly (Lola Tung) spend an intimate night together at the Cousins beach house in the winter.
“We talked a lot about that scene, and we spoke with an intimacy coordinator who was there and sort of went through exactly what it was going to look like,” Tung told TheWrap “It’s this really just emotional moment between these two people, these two teenagers who have fallen in love and have this deep connection and do what is right for them in the moment.”

The television show of the summer for teens sprang from the pages of Jenny Han’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty” trilogy. Season 2 of the Prime Video series, which debuted July 14, takes on the events of the second book, “It’s Not Summer Without You.” As with Season 1, several changes were made to the adaptation for the small screen, such as the addition of new characters and the expansion of certain storylines. Other details, large and small, make the show a bit different from Han’s second book, but with the author also serving as showrunner on the series, these changes come naturally.
Season 1 had its own changes that ripple into Season 2, such as Jeremiah’s bisexuality, Laurel’s career as an author (she is a professor in the books) and more. Kyra Sedgewick and Elsie Fisher joined Season 2 as completely new characters that don’t exist in the books.

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were at the Tudum Theater on Wednesday for the premiere of Netflix’s new docuseries, Quarterback.
Quarterback is an eight-episode docuseries that follows quarterbacks Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota and show their lives outside the football field. Mahomes plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, Cousins for the Minnesota Vikings and Mariota for the Atlanta Falcons. Kelce also plays for the Kansas City Chiefs but is a tight end.
“Look – we’ve seen quarterbacks mic’d up for a game. We’ve certainly seen training camp. But we’ve never followed a quarterback throughout the entire season to see what he does Sunday night after a big win, after a brutal loss on a last-second field goal — what they do on Mondays and Tuesdays on their off days,” said NFL legend Peyton Manning, who is also the executive producer for the show, in a statement.

“Cousins” was selected as a finalist in this year’s ShortList Film Festival, presented by TheWrap. You can watch the films and vote for your favorite here.
To paraphrase one of the many quips Billy Crystal throws down in “When Harry Met Sally”: “In a city of 8 million people, you’re bound to run into your ex.” This is the shrewd setup for Karina Dandashi’s “Cousins,” a 13-minute, Brooklyn-set short centering on Layla (played by Dandashi) and Tarek (Ribal Rayess), two cousins whose reunion is turned upside down when Layla’s ex (Monica Sanborn) turns up at the same bar.
“This is the first time I’ve actually done a comedy,” Dandashi told TheWrap. A Pittsburgh native now living in New York City, the filmmaker has previously embraced stories about Arab Americans grappling with sexuality and desire in projects including her acclaimed short “Dress Up,” in which she also starred.

Taylor Swift has dropped “Back to December (Taylor’s Version) in the Season 2 trailer for “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”
“Last summer felt like a dream,” Lola Tung’s voice says over shots of Isabel “Belly” Conklin (Tung) and Conrad Fisher (Chris Briney) on the beach followed by her talking with Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno). “It was unlike any other summer.”
Season 1 of the Prime Video series, adapted from Jenny Han’s best-selling book trilogy, watched Belly visit Cousins Beach once more, but she has glowed up quite a bit in the time she spent away. Both Fisher brothers noticed, and a love triangle between the three of them ensued. Things got even more complicated when the boys discovered their mother Susannah’s cancer had relapsed. After a chaotic and dramatic debutante ball, she promised her sons that she would do a trial for treatment.

Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for its upcoming docuseries “Quarterbacks,” the streamer’s first collaboration with the National Football League. The project premieres July 12.
The eight-episode series offers exclusive, unprecedented access to Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota both on an off the field over the course of the 2022 season, and it features moments such as Mahomes’ NFL record for total offense on his way to winning the league and Super Bowl Mvp awards, Cousins leading the Minnesota Vikings to an NFC North Division title and Mariota taking over as the Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback.
“This is about as close as they’ll ever get to seeing what it’s like to being a quarterback in this league,” Cousins said in the trailer.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is heading back to Cousins for the next chapter in Jenny Han‘s coming-of-age tale focused on 16-year-old Belly Conklin (Lola Tung). Season 2 is set to debut on Friday, July 14 on Prime Video, with the first three episodes; the rest will be released weekly. As previewed in the first official teaser trailer (which features Taylor Swift’s “August” from folklore), above, Belly is still torn between family friends and brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) — though as we see at the beginning, she and Conrad are obviously “into each other.” But that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the possibility of her and Jeremiah. And hey, no matter what, as the video tells us as things get dramatic, “nothing feels better than the summer.” (Credit: Prime Video) In Season 2, while she once counted down the days to her time spent at Cousins,...

Shout! Studios presents The Magic Flute by Florian Zigl, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, at 325 theaters with expansion likely. A reimagining of the Mozart opera, it follows a present-day teen sent from London to the Austrian Alps on singing scholarship at the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a century old forgotten passageway into the magical world of Mozart’s famed opera.
This Harry Potter-ish adventure fantasy stars Jack Wolfe as Tim Walker, who passes from school into the world of the opera and its many adventures as hero Prince Tamino. Wide releases may be picking up steam and Scream, but in terms of new specialty, and family fare, these isn’t much new competition this weekend.
Melissa Boag, EVP of Family Entertainment at Shout! Studios, hopes it will play with fans of magical adventure, Harry Potter, and classical music. Wolfe is a star of Netflix YA series Shadow & Bone.

Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota are gearing up to give football fans a glimpse at what it really takes to play and win in the NFL. Netflix announced it plans for a new docuseries called "Quarterback" on Feb. 22, and the series will include tons of behind-the-scenes excerpts of the three football stars' lives, including windows into their homes, families, and footage from the games themselves.
