Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling felt very sorry that she had to kill off Professor Severus Snape. Played by the late Alan Rickman, Snape is a fan-favorite figure despite his stance as an anti-hero and a morally grey persona.

The writer later apologized to the fans for what she did as many mourned the loss of Snape, as well as other beloved characters. In fact, she already told the late actor about the fate of the famed professor even before they made it to the screen.

Revisiting the "Harry Potter" films in the last few years has been a bit of a challenge, given ... well ... its author. But since thousands of people put their hearts and souls into that series for a decade, I cannot help but get swept up in it all whenever I've decided to throw them on, even the entries that I don't think are all that great. What comes into focus the more I see the films is that the Mvp of the franchise is production designer Stuart Craig.
Because most big-budget blockbusters now are either filmed in front of a green screen in a parking lot in Atlanta, Georgia, or on a soundstage with a Volume screen and light system, seeing something constructed like Hogwarts — with its massive scope and intricate detail — makes the "Harry Potter" films feel bigger than just about everything else. Obviously, things are augmented with visual effects,...

For a movie that fits firmly in the dystopian sci-fi genre, Alfonso Cuarón's 2006 film "Children of Men" makes for one of the most truly terrifying films ever. In a world where infertility has been the law of the land for eighteen years and resources have dwindled, humanity has turned on itself. It's like the grimmest of '70s science fiction films, only made by a master filmmaker at the peak of his powers. While it might have taken a tragedy for him to become committed to the film, his passion is evident in every frame.
More than anything out of the ordinary, the movie's vision of London looks distressingly normal, with office workers attending to business as usual despite chaos and bombings. As a television PSA seen early on notes, "Only Britain Soldiers On." The movie opens with the death of an 18-year-old, the world's youngest person. And things...

With the "Harry Potter" movies, one thing was always certain: the magical school for witches and wizards, Hogwarts, would be cozy. This was home for the heroes, who would fall in love, fail classes, and nearly die there -- it was important that the audience feel the same affection for the location that they did. Within its walls, there would be moving staircases, hallways to nowhere, and ghosts, but more importantly, a rich and evocative sense of life orchestrated by production designer Stuart Craig. Even as the movies got darker and different directors came on board, Hogwarts retained its...

While virtual production has become a mainstay of “Fantastic Beasts,” the introduction of VR to the planning and designing of digital set builds was crucial to the series’ latest chapter — particularly when shooting was postponed by Covid-19 lockdown. This was due to the new pre-production services toolkit of London-based VFX studio Framestore, which handled “The Secrets of Dumbledore” and the two “Harry Potter” spin-offs that preceded.
Launched early in 2020, Framestore Pre-production Services (Fps) delivered 90 minutes of postvis for David Yates’ director’s cut, as well as using virtual production tools to help plan and visualize some of the film’s key set pieces, including the chaotic Berlin political rally, and the final battle in Bhutan between Dumbledore (Jude Law) and dark wizard Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen).

A version of this story about “The Father” first appeared in the Oscar Nominations Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Florian Zeller’s “The Father” is an intricate puzzle of a film. Based on the stage play by Zeller, it appears to be a series of conversations between a man, Anthony (Anthony Hopkins), his daughter, Anne (Olivia Colman), and a couple of other people who come in and out of Anthony’s apartment. But events change, the people might be hallucinations, and slowly we realize we’re as confused as Anthony, who is suffering from dementia.
A big part of that confusion comes from the apartment itself, which subtly changes to draw us into Anthony’s world. “Every day we were able to change a few things – sometimes the color, sometimes the proportion, sometimes the furniture,” Zeller said. “You have enough to feel that you are still in the same place,...

Despite amassing more than 70 credits, this year’s recipient of the Camerimage Lifetime Achievement Award, Philippe Rousselot, shows no signs of stopping. As he tells Variety from his house in Brittany, he just can’t.
“Once you have piled up enough films, the decision is made. They needed to give this award to someone and I am very glad to accommodate,” he jokes. “Other people want us to retire, but it’s never a personal decision among DPs. We never stop working. We can’t get enough of it!”
Counting a BAFTA and two Césars among his many accolades, Rousselot was also nominated for an Academy Award three times, winning for Robert Redford’s “A River Runs Through It” in 1992.
“I was at the Oscar ceremony when ‘Hope and Glory’ was nominated. Of course we didn’t win. I asked John Boorman: ‘What is the importance of this award?...

The 23rd annual Art Directors Guild Awards took place on Saturday (Feb. 2). These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the winner of the Best Production Design race at the Academy Awards. Over the first 22 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar champ has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various genre categories. Fifteen of the Academy Award winners first prevailed with the guild, including the last five in a row.
The current Oscar frontrunner for this award, “The Favourite,” won at the Adg in the period category over, among others, two of its Oscar rivals: “First Man” and “Roma.” That race was rounded out by “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” One of the other two Academy Awards contenders — “Black Panther” — won the Adg fantasy film prize. The fifth Oscar nominee, “Mary Poppins Returns,” contended in that race. The contemporary award went to “Crazy Rich Asians.

Period and fantasy world-building often lead the production design Oscar contenders and this year is no exception. Hannah Beachler wowed both Marvel and director Ryan Coogler with her deeply researched and inventive designs for the hidden African kingdom Wakanda in “Black Panther,” from elaborate tribal rituals to a James Bond high-tech laboratory.
Eugenio Caballero made it possible for Alfonso Cuarón to recreate the 1971 Mexico City of his youth in painstaking detail, down to the contents of dresser drawers. Nathan Crowley went back to the 60s to chronicle Houston astronaut homes and workplaces for Damien Chazelle’s “First Man,” as well as varied airplanes and space ships that led the way to the 1969 moon landing.
Fiona Crumble gave Yorgos Lanthimos a sumptuous period playpen for his 18th century royal court, which was filmed with natural light. And John Myhre extended the turn-of-the-century world of the original Mary Poppins to the Depression era 25 years later,...

The Oscar race for Best Visual Effects shapes up as a showdown between “First Man” and “Avengers: Infinity War” — reshaping in-camera VFX for Nasa’s trip to the moon versus Marvel’s brilliant CG Thanos (with the shortlist of 10 finalists announced December 17).
Overall, though, it’s been a stunning year for character animation and world building, powered by “Ready Player One,” “Black Panther,”and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” And let’s not forget the wonderful “invisible” work on “Mission: Impossible — Fallout.” However, rounding out the year are several noteworthy contenders: “Welcome to Marwen,” “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle,” “Mortal Engines,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” and “Bumblebee.”
Thanks to Thanos, “Infinity War” has become a serious contender and could bring Marvel its first VFX Oscar. He’s performed with great intensity and inner turmoil by Josh Brolin and brilliantly animated by Digital Domain and Weta Digital.

Bruno Delbonnel, celebrated for his painterly work capturing the brooding WWII-era political intrigue “Darkest Hour” for Joe Wright, and for the wonder world he filmed in 2001’s “Amelie,” is known for breaking conventions. He uses the sun as backlight and works to employ deep shadows into the atmosphere of his subjects. Screening “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” competing at EnergaCamerimage, he says the Coen brothers’ first digitally shot film offered a host of lessons – but is no guarantee they will soon depart from their use of film.
You first worked with the Coen brothers in a collection of city stories, “Paris, je t’aime” in 2006 but not again until 2013 on “Inside Llewyn Davis.” Did they seek you out to help them express their unique, dark comic look?
No, it was just like they are shooting in Paris and they asked me to do it. Roger Deakins had mentioned my name.

To celebrate #BackToHogwarts Day tomorrow, J.K. Rowling is joined by the cast and crew of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald to reminisce over their favourite Hogwarts memories in this brand new featurette.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World.
At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MacUsa (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead.

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.

Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.
Moments earlier Kenneth Lonergan accepted the original screenplay award for Manchester By The Sea in the film’s first prize. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – winners of this award for Good Will Hunting 19 years ago – presented the honour to Lonergan. Damon was a producer on the film.
Meryl Streep used her Oscar show platform to pay subtle homage to the unifying power of film when she joined Javier Bardem on stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the cinematography award.
“Truth is hard to reveal,” Streep said, “but when it happens on the movie screen filmgoers no matter where they are from, feel their hearts soar.”

For three-time Oscar winners Stuart Craig and Colleen Atwood, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” offered fascinating stylistic departures. J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” standalone takes place in New York in 1926 — a time, of course, when the immigrant experience flourished.
“New York was all about diversity, and [director] David Yates wanted [to express that],” Atwood told IndieWire. “There were people new to New York and there were people that had been there for a generation — and it was an open-minded time.”
Thus, for both production and costume design, there was great class and cultural diversity to explore in architecture and wardrobes. Although they considered shooting in New York City, that proved to be impractical, so they returned to the back lot of Leavesden Studios outside of London.
“J.K. Rowling identified particular buildings in her script, including the Gothic Woolworth [for the Magical Congress headquarters], which at that time was the largest building in the world,” Craig told IndieWire.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

If you've read The Film Experience for any length of time beyond let's say, a week, you'll know that we live for eye candy. Three of the cinematic arts that most regularly provide this are, outside of beautiful movie stars in the acting categories, Production Design and Costume Design i.e. the Moulin Rouge! categories. We love these categories so much we have two weekly series for them, Daniel Walber's "The Furniture" and my own forthcoming costume series "Three Fittings".
Anyway, it's time to make our final predictions for Oscar but it's also time to get those Film Bitch Awards (my own long running awards jamboree) going. So herewith my personal ballot and, putting the pundit hat on, my Oscar predictions. These two modes should not be confused... so apologies for discussing them simultaneously. This is what happens when you procrastinate!
