To quote Space Ghost himself, "I'll be dead long before you were born, and I'll be dead long before you'll be dead."
In 1994, producer Mike Lazzo donned a pith helmet, filled his arms with machetes, and trekked into the darkest corners of the bleak, terrifying Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. In the depths, he re-discovered a long-forgotten, one-season animated series from 1966 called "Space Ghost," a superhero show about a white-clad, cape-wearing starship captain who fought bud-like villains in the inky void of the cosmos. Space Ghost, voiced by Gary Owens, could pass through walls and oversaw a pair of sidekicks named Jan (Ginny Tyler) and Jace (Tim Matheson) as well as a chimp named Blip (Don Messick).
Like most of Hanna-Barbera's output, "Space Ghost" was strange and awful. 20 years later, reruns of shows like "Space Ghost" were increasingly enjoyed exclusively by college students under the influence of potent smokables. One would be...

"Toonami" debuted on the Cartoon Network in 1997, back when the network was just hitting its stride. Cartoon Network debuted in 1992, and originally offered mostly old animated reruns. It was, for years, the best place to find old Droopy cartoons, as well as Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry cartoons, old DC superhero fare, and reruns of Hanna-Barbera trash like "Scooby-Doo" and "The Flintstones."
In 1994, the network had the brilliant idea to repurpose a largely forgotten Hanna-Barbera character named Space Ghost, transforming him into a talk show host. "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" set a new dadaist tone for the Cartoon Network, proving that it could make hip, self-aware, original content in addition to its blocks of reruns. In 1996 and 1997, Cartoon Network launched a quartet of new shows -- "Dexter's Laboratory," "Johnny Bravo," "The Powerpuff Girls," and "Cow and Chicken" -- and their reputation was solidified. It was now a destination station.

Comedian Brett Gelman has taken to Twitter to announce that he has “severed ties” with comedy network Adult Swim in the wake of the recent controversy surrounding their lack of female creators.
Splitsider reports that the “Dinner in America” star and creator will no longer work in tandem with the network, specifically pointing to Evp/creative director Mike Lazzo’s recent Reddit post that attempted to explain away the channel’s lack of female creators — as was reported earlier this year, they currently have zero projects from women currently in the works — by announcing that “women don’t tend to like conflict” when it comes time to write and produce comedy.

Mike Lazzo, who serves as vice president and creative director of Adult Swim, received criticism this week for reportedly not hiring women in creative positions because, as one anonymous former employee recalls him saying, “when you put women in the writers room, you get conflict, not comedy.”

Lazzo clarified his comments on reddit: “What I actually said was-women don’t tend to like conflict, comedy often comes from conflict, so that’s probably why we (or others) have so few female projects,” he wrote. “Nonetheless this was a dumb answer to a good question as Lucille Ball and Gilda Rather to Amy Poelher and Amy Schumer prove my statement a load of generalized nonsense.” A recent Buzzfeed report states that only one out of every 34 credits go to women on Adult Swim, the...

Per the official synopsis, the series is “an absurd comedy set in a neglected dream therapy facility. Each week desperate patients have their dreams recorded and analyzed by Dream Corp’s absent-minded professor, Dr. Roberts (Jon Gries), and his team of unremarkable scientists.”
Created by Daniel Stessen (who won the 2013 SXSW Grand Jury Award for his animated short “The Gold Sparrow”), the series is a hybrid in more ways than one, using a mix of live-action footage and rotoscoped animation to capture the divide between dreams and reality. The effect created leads to a...

As we reported yesterday, Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Aqua Teen Hunger Force voice actor and animator C. Martin Croker passed away on Sunday at age 54. Now Adult Swim has decided to honor his memory in the best way they know how. The broadcaster announced on Twitter that they have posted virtually every episode of Space Ghost online and without the normal pay log in. This is great news for anyone who ever loved the show as well as those who have yet to discover it. This is an extra special treat considering DVDs for the series are out of print and hard to come by. To check them out, click on this link. Zorak and Moltar would have wanted it that way.

C. Martin Croker, one of the most important voices and animators on Adult Swim, passed away on Sunday. He was just 54. Croker was a name you might not have known, but you knew his work as the voice behind Zorak and Moltar on Space Ghost Coast to Coast. Additionally, he voiced Dr. Weird, Steve and other characters on the long-running Aqua Teen Hunger Force. But Croker was more than that. He also served as an animator for both shows. Adult Swim honored his memory on Twitter writing “R.I.P. C. Martin Croker.” They also re-ran a classic episode of Space Ghost that featured Ashley Judd and Dr. Timothy Leary. Adult Swim animator and voice actor Clay Martin Croker died yesterday at the age of 54, as reported by Adult Swim creative director Jason DeMarco and contributor/rapper Mc Chris. Con season has well and truly slid into gear now; with Awesome Con kicking things off a few weeks ago and Sdcc and NerdHQ fast approaching. Of course, con season is really year-round these days; but for me, it starts with Awesome Con and ends with New York Comic Con.
This year’s Awesome Con was, as usual, a great start to the season for me. What I like about the con is that despite only being four years old, it’s managed to integrate various fun aspects of different flavors of cons into a fairly seamless whole – meaning that if you aren’t there for one particular facet of the offerings, there are plenty of others to experience. Here were some of the highlights for me:

Oh, Dragon Con, how I adore you! Let me count the ways…
They include:
1. The fact that even the airline losing my luggage until 3 a.m. on arrival Thursday feels like something I can roll with, since, after all, the minute I walk in I find old friends (and new) to greet me and take my mind off of things – and to commiserate, and hope with me that all of my toiletries and hand-made costume items are not lost forever in the bowels of Reagan National. Thankfully they weren’t. 2. The costumes, oh the costumes. Including my own! This year, a Harley Quinn / Jake the Dog mash-up (with hand-painted grenades, and my partner-in-crime Poison Ivy / Princess Bubblegum and bonus convertible-to-party-time skirt); Pinky from Pinky & the Brain (with my friend Chicken Boo, who is definitely not a chicken); and Helena from Orphan Black (complete with bloody fortune-teller). So I just got back from Awesome Con DC 2015, and happily, it lived up to its name once again, because it was pretty darned awesome!
It was also kind of interesting to realize that every year I’ve gone has been a different experience, thanks to what I was doing each year. The first year, which was of course also smaller than the current con, I was reporting for ComicMix but did not have any other responsibilities. That meant I had time to see pretty much all of the floor and meet any guests I’d like, plus doing great, longer-form interviews with the talented Phil Lamarr and Billy West. Last year, I was running programming, so I saw a whole lot of back hallways, the exhibit hall whooshing by at a fast clip several times as I hurried around, many great volunteers, and a few guests for just long...
