Exclusive: Juno Films has picked up North American rights to Hilma — the latest film written and directed by three-time Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape), which is poised to make its North American premiere at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

Tom Wlaschiha and Jazzy de Lisser (“Game of Thrones”) have joined the cast of Viaplay’s major English-language original feature “Hilma.” The film is written and directed by Lasse Hallström, the Oscar-nominated director of “The Cider House Rules” and “My Life as a Dog.”

Nent Group’s Swedish label Brain Academy is plotting two major films from A-list writing-directing teams. The first, “The World Council of Magic,” is helmed by “The Most Beautiful Boy in the World”’s Kristian Petri, based on a screenplay by genre-bending author John Ajvide Lindqvist(”Border,” “Let the Right One In”).
”The World Council of Magic” is my first script not based on one of my stories,” said Lindqvist, often dubbed the Stephen King of Sweden. The film deals with a group of elderly magicians of the practical kind. In their hungry youth, they searched for the secret behind actual magic. Swedish production company Brain Academy has brought two upcoming features to this year’s Goteborg Film Festival: “The Perfect Patient,” currently in post-production which presented at Friday’s works in progress section, and “The Girlfriend,” which participated in Rotterdam’s financing and co pro market, CineMart.
“The Perfect Patient” tells the story of the biggest legal scandal in Sweden’s history. Hannes Råstam was an investigative journalist dedicated to proving the innocence of Thomas Quick, a confessed serial killer whose convictions for eight murders were acquired under precarious circumstances. At the time Quick was a patient at a mental hospital, and confessed to more than 30 murders. Beyond the confession the evidence was weak, and Råstam was unrelenting in unmasking the legal chaos which lead to a life sentence for Quick.

If included, it would count as one of the rare Venice preemed North American premiere debuts and uncommon 35mm treats at the fest. After doubling up at the Venice Film Festival with the Luigi de Laurentiis” award for a Debut Film and the Best Director Horizons award, The Childhood of a Leader‘s Brady Corbet recently picked up another Best Director award at the Lisbon & Estoril Film Fest. A regular figure at the festival as an actor in both short and features from Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin era up until Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer, Corbet also had his short debut (2009’s Protect You + Me.) and writing credits on Mona Fastvold’s The Sleepwalker (2014) and last year’s short Rabbit from Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre all premiere at the festival. The available acquisitions title has had its share of extremely convinced supporters and even the detractors acknowledge the genius in Corbet’s debut oeuvre.

Goteborg: Nordic territories will need to see an increase in the number of local commissioners and platforms if they are to adequately showcase flourishing scripted drama, industry experts agreed yesterday in Gothenburg.
Speaking at Nordic TV conference TV Drama Vision, held under the auspices of the Gothenburg Film Festival (Jan 23-Feb 2), local TV execs agreed that while the Nordic markets continue to produce top-notch local (often crime) drama series they must see new platforms and players in order to maximize growth.
“As a consumer I’m frustrated by a business as usual approach in Sweden,” said Goran Danasten, project manager at Swedish broadcaster Svt.
“There are still so few places to put quality drama. The world is exploding with platforms but in Sweden, and Scandinavia, it’s still all about the linear broadcasters and that’s not enough. It’s like everyone is hesitating and waiting.”
Helena Danielsson, executive producer of the Fjallbaka Murders series, agreed and said:...

The Childhood of a Leader
Director: Brady Corbet // Writers: Brady Corbet, Mona Fastvold
Working with the likes of Bonello, Östlund, Assayas, Hansen-Løve and Baumbach, when you count the 2014 festival release year alone, actor Brady Corbet (Mysterious Skin; Funny Games U.S.; Simon Killer) has built quite the impressive resume working with the auteur set. While The Childhood of a Leader is his feature length directing debut, this counts as back to back years working in the filmmaker capacity when you take into account his writing creds in Mona Fastvold’s overlooked ’14 title, The Sleepwalker, and the soon to be premiered Sundance short Rabbit, by filmmaker Laure De Clermont-Tonnerre. Initially announced as starring Juliette Binoche (Corbet’s co-star from Clouds of Sils Maria), she was later replaced by Berenice Bejo. It goes without saying that most of the attention will be placed on Robert Pattinson, continuing his tour of difficult, auteur driven and inspired cinematic projects,...
