During the episode, Ozzy Osbourne asked Sharon, his wife, about the festival. “Not just one [at] the fucking Forum, but a whole Ozzfest?” he inquired. “Yeah, sure,” Sharon replied. “Of course.”

With dual strikes reverberating through the entertainment ecosystem — and actor and writer deals off-limits for much of 2023 — Hollywood dealmaking has been more challenging than ever. Still, there were multiple billion-dollar mergers, a flurry of acquisitions by representation and content companies, and opportunities for talent in podcasting and endorsements. Meet the lawyers, bankers, reps and execs who negotiated some of the year’s most interesting and multi-figured pacts.
Profiles by Winston Cho, Erik Hayden, Caitlin Huston, Georg Szalai, Etan Vlessing and Alex Weprin.
M&a’s Heavy Muscle
Sky-high interest rates, geopolitical instability, recession anxiety and heightened scrutiny from federal antitrust enforcers have made this a choppy year for corporate dealmaking. Against this backdrop, the first half of 2023 saw a notable drop-off in premerger filings compared to 2021 and 2022, when M&a activity reached record levels.

‘Anything’s Possible’ Writer Ximena García Lecuona Sets Directorial Debut: ‘No Me Sigas’ (Exclusive)
Chosen as one of Variety’s 10 Screenwriters to Watch 2022, Ximena García Lecuona, the Mexico City-based writer of Billy Porter’s “Anything’s Possible,” has set her directorial debut “No Me Sigas,” a Spanish-language chiller with a shocking final twist.
Also writer of “The Kiss List,” García Lecuona will direct with brother Eduardo Lecuona. The smart genre horror thriller is set up at Mexico City’s Maligno Gorehouse, which co-produced “Huesera,” a double Tribeca winner and XYZ pick-up.
Also written by García Lecuona, “No Me Sigas” turns on Carla, 26, who dreams of becoming a big influencer. To achieve this she decides to fake a haunting in her apartment. However, in playing with these dark forces, she accidentally lets in a real malignant entity.
“Although a horror movie instead of a romantic comedy, ‘No Me Sigas,’ [like ‘Anything’s Possible” and “The Kiss List”] also falls in the Young Adult genre, it has that coming-of-age feel.

Korn and Adidas, together at last! After famously releasing the song “A.D.I.D.A.S.” back in 1996 and wearing Adidas track suits throughout the ’90s, Korn are officially partnering with Adidas on a new line of sneakers and apparel.
Back in June, leaked documents suggested the collaboration was going to happen, with images of the footwear even surfacing at the time. But now, Adidas has issued an official press release detailing the collection, which is set for an October 27th release.
Adidas’ press release reads, in part:
“When pioneering California-based alt metal band, KoRn, emerged onto the scene 30 years ago, they broke away from the genre’s established aesthetic codes, and paved the way for a new generation of fans by sporting classic Three Stripes adidas tracksuits. Never ceasing to challenge normal convention, KoRn and the Trefoil have maintained a long standing relationship over the years through an...

Korn provided Adidas with all sorts of free advertising decades ago. Now, the nu-metal pioneers are officially partnering with the sneaker brand with a collaboration set to drop this October.
News of the partnership was actually first tweeted out by KicksFinder back in February, but now Complex has obtained an internal Adidas document that includes images of two Korn-branded sneakers — the Campus 00s and the Supermodified — along with seven pieces of apparel.
Korn famously wore Adidas tracksuits in their early days, and even released a song called “A.D.I.D.A.S.” (in this case an acronym for “All Day I Dream About Sex”), yet they never officially collaborated with the sneaker company. In fact, they actually ended up inking a deal with Puma, with singer Jonathan Davis once telling Kerrang!, “We switched to Puma because they told us they’d put us in a commercial and give us...

One of the first qualities that comes to mind when admiring Terrifer 2 and the Terrifier franchise in general is the practical effects, and rightfully so. Director Damien Leone and team have concocted such seamless and impressive SFX work that can feel like a lost art within a current filmmaking landscape that heavily relies on CGI and easy fixes. In fact, T2 fans have become so assured in the film’s practical effects excellence that they have often (incorrectly) ascribed the final visuals to it entirely, which is not the case.
After scrolling through social media comments that misunderstood the film’s usage of visual FX work— one in particular that wrongly attributed the mid-credits Art’s (David Howard Thornton) head-on-lap/birthing scene to “lack of digital replacement” and an animatronic head— Leone and “Kill” Josh Petrino, T2’s primary VFX artist, developed an inside joke for the “thankless job” that is often VFX work.

Woodstock ‘99 was one of the great symbolic events of the end of the 20th century, occurring about two years before the violent randomness of the 21st smashed into view. Intended to capture the idyllic spirit in which the original Woodstock festival, which happened in 1969, lives in memory, the 1999 edition was instead marred by violent riots. It was a crystal-clear announcement that whatever hippie spirit still existed in mainstream American life had been choked off at the source.
That’s an interesting story worth telling — indeed, HBO’s “Music Box” series of documentaries, produced by Bill Simmons, did an excellent job last year of placing the story within the cultural context of a dead-end nihilistic youth culture and a late-‘90s rock scene dominated by male rage. Netflix’s new documentary series “Trainwreck: Woodstock ‘99” expends plenty of energy on depicting what happened; indeed, its three installments track the festival’s three nights.

Korn unveiled a stark new video for single “You’ll Never Find Me.” The track is the first single for their forthcoming album The Nothing.
Andrej Gavriss directed the clip, which opens with an older scientist looking at the night sky through his telescope as a meteor hits the earth. He studies particles from the meteor in his lab in between scenes of a younger version of himself in the desert. When the younger version starts running through the desert, he begins to rapidly age, eventually becoming the older scientist.

A funny thing happened on the way to the upfront in a year of major transitions for the largest player in television.
Numerous network and studio executives found a dealmaking environment that was more collegial and collaborative than in the recent past. With so much of the traditional TV business in flux, there was a palpable feeling of competitors taking a long view and trying to find ways to fight through the storm together.
“There was a sense of resignation about the structural changes that took place this past year,” said Peter Roth, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. TV Group.
The most seismic shift has been the union of Disney and 21st Century Fox and the immense TV content and distribution at the enlarged company. Consolidation and the move into streaming by Disney, NBCUniversal, WarnerMedia and others promises to fundamentally change the economics of television programming. But...

Upfronts week always revolves around big reveals and highly anticipated first looks. This year, one of the most talked-about contenders to emerge was not a show but a studio.
The newly minted Disney Television Studios made a splashy debut as three of the industry’s large production entities – 20th Century Fox Television, ABC Studios and Fox 21 Television Studios – have come together under one roof following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
The mantra on the Century City and Burbank lots is collaboration and cross-pollination of talent. The three companies will continue to be run with autonomy as distinct labels under the Disney Television Studios umbrella. But there is a clear expectation that the labels will share resources and information as warranted to support the larger cause of feeding successful shows to Disney’s suite of platforms.
Executives at the DTS studios have spent the past few weeks on a whirlwind get-to-know-your-colleagues tour.

There was wall-to-wall star power at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills on Friday, with Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Mahershala Ali, Viggo Mortensen, and actors ranging from Elsie Fisher (age 15) to Angela Lansbury (age 93), but Spike Lee stole the show at the AFI Awards.
In opening remarks, AFI president-ceo Bob Gazzale said everyone was a winner, so he wouldn’t single out any individual, but after praising the AFI Conservatory, he noted that Lee was wearing an NYU cap, prompting Lee to stand up and say, “I applied to AFI, but I didn’t get in!” which got the biggest laugh of the afternoon.
Before the start of the luncheon, there was 90 minutes of power-schmoozing, as Alfonso Cuaron hugged Donna Langley, Ted Sarandos chatted with Sam Elliott, the “Black Panther” team mingled with “This Is Us” reps, “Pose’s” Dominique Jackson spoke to Michael B. Jordan, and FX execs accepted...

Jonathan Davis was responsible for the logo and while the image and the music were great they didn’t do so well initially. In fact from personal memory Korn was at one time among the few bands

Proietto had been overseeing animation production for the studio for a long time. Disney is about to become the undisputed titan of TV series production once the media giant completes its buyout of 21st Century Fox assets.
The question of how all of that activity will be strategically deployed under the Disney umbrella remains unclear even after Monday’s formal announcement of the management hierarchy for TV led by 21st Century Fox president Peter Rice, who will segue to chairman of Walt Disney Television once the deal closes early next year.
After the Fox acquisition, Disney will be home to no less than five major banners for primetime scripted series production: 20th Century Fox TV, ABC Studios, Fox 21 Television Studios, FX Productions and ABC Signature Studios.
Disney will be under pressure to squeeze out some $2.6 billion in post-merger synergy savings within a few years of the deal’s closing. That has led to speculation about a huge number of layoffs as Disney...

When the Walt Disney Company unveiled much of its new TV networks organizational structure Monday, it didn’t come with many surprises: As expected, Peter Rice will assume oversight as chairman of Walt Disney Television and co-chair of Disney Media Networks once the company closes its acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
Under Rice, as previously reported, Dana Walden has been named chairman of Disney TV Studios and ABC Entertainment, while John Landgraf will continue to oversee FX Networks and FX Productions as chairman. National Geographic Partners chairman Gary Knell, Disney Channels Worldwide president/COO Gary Marsh and ABC News president James Goldston will also answer to Rice.
With long-time 21st Century Fox execs taking over key Disney TV oversight, Burbank’s about to feel a lot more like Century City. And that’s clearly Disney CEO Bob Iger’s goal: “The strength of 21st Century Fox’s first-class management talent...
