Purple Rain, Prince’s smash 1984 music-packed film, is being developed for the stage by a Broadway producer, with a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and direction by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz.
Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate is currently a hit on Broadway and an all-but-certain shoo-in for multiple Tony nominations this year. Blain-Cruz was Tony-nominated for her direction of the Lincoln Center Theater’s 2022 production of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth.
The stage adaptation will feature music and lyrics from Prince’s Purple Rain movie and album.
The project was announced today by Broadway producer Orin Wolf. Additional production details and timing will be announced in the coming months.
Although Wolf’s announcement did not specifically mention Broadway, instead simply saying the project is being developed for the stage, Broadway almost certainly must be on minds given the high-profiles and previous credits of the individuals involved, not...

Snoogins! Kevin Smith says he’s bringing Jay and Silent Bob back for another movie! Do you know what that means? More stoner absurdity, crude humor, and convenience store loitering! Let’s go!
“Right now as we speak, I’m writing another Jay and Silent Bob movie,” Smith told PopCulture.com. The 53-year-old Swiss army knife of cinematic talent says he lost a bet to his friend and co-star Jason Mewes, and now the dynamic duo is poised to roll more blunts, drink beers, and groove to Morris Day and the Time! “For me and Jay, we always kind of have fun doing those and stuff, so I lost a bet with him. And so I’m writing another Jay and Bob movie,” said Smith.

Well this isn’t very Cool at all. On Friday, funk/R&b legend Morris Day told fans that he has been forbidden by the Prince estate from performing as or otherwise making use of the name Morris Day & the Time.
“I’ve given 40 years of my life to building up a name and legacy that Prince and I came up with. A name that while he was alive, he had no problem with me using. I literally put my blood, sweat and tears into bringing value to that name. In fact, he booked me on several tours, and many jam packed nights at Paisley Park, under the name Morris Day & The Time. Not once ever saying to me that I couldn’t use that name configuration,” Day said in a statement posted to the Morris Day & The Time Facebook account.

In 1990, Prince, who was as competitive as he was virtuosic, made a rare admission of vulnerability: “To this day, [the Time] are the only band I’ve ever been afraid of.”
Prince had initially helped nurture the Time, a group of crack musicians from his hometown of Minneapolis that he formed into a band and wrote songs for. When they emerged in 1981 with an eponymous album full of knee-buckling funk and an impeccably choreographed live show, they immediately scored a pair of Top Ten R&b hits: “Get It Up,...

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is going back into quarantine – at least for one night.
The NBC late-night show is returning tomorrow, Friday March 19, to Fallon’s house to mark one year from when the host started filming his At Home shows.
Fallon was one of the first hosts to film content and then a show at his house after the Covid-19 pandemic hit the U.S. It was his kids that became breakout hits during these shows, which were filmed by Fallon’s wife Nancy Juvonen.
The former SNL star will interview Matthew McConaughey and Megan Rapinoe on the show, which features musical guest Morris Day ft. Trinidad Jame$.
The show has also teamed up with State Farm as it continues to support food bank charity Feeding America. As part of the 1-Year Anniversary At Home special, State Farm will match up to $100,000 in donations made to the charity.

DJ Cassidy, whose popular “Pass the Mic” all-star video jams were most recently part of the Biden/Harris inaugural programs, has made a deal with BET to produce six “Mic” specials during 2021, all of them set to follow the network’s annual awards shows or other major programming.
The first of the six, dubbed “DJ Cassidy’s Pass The Mic: The BET After Party,” is now in production and set to air immediately following the NAACP Image Awards on March 27.
“I’ll continue to be celebrating my musical heroes of the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s through their iconic records of all eras and genres,” Cassidy tells Variety. “I grew up watching BET, and I was exposed to many if not all of my musical heroes through watching their music videos on ‘Video Soul,’ ‘Rap City’ or their many other shows. “What time is it?” is a question Prince fans have been asking one another, and not just because they’ve got Morris Day on their minds. A re-broadcast of “Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince” was hastily scheduled for Saturday after the original airing of the special Tuesday won the ratings race for the night, to the surprise of many.
Reaction to the first broadcast was wildly enthusiastic among most viewers. “It seemed to strike a chord with people,” says executive producer Ken Ehrlich, “and more than one person pointed out how refreshing it was to see a live audience, as opposed to one more couch-and-guitar number (not that there’s anything wrong with that). It did well for the network, which always helps.” The show was filmed before the coronavirus pandemic shut-downs, of course, a couple of nights after the Grammys.

Sometimes it snows more than once in April. “Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince” did well enough in the ratings for CBS Tuesday night that the network has scheduled the special for an instant rerun, to air Saturday, April 25 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.
The two-hour tribute, well received by casual fans as well as the Prince faithful, was the top-rated show on television Tuesday night, scoring 1.0 in the 18-49 demographic (besting the 0.8 for the series finale of “Empire”). In total overall viewers, it brought in an impressive 6.49 million, slightly behind the 7.7 million of its network lead-in, “NCIS.”
The first airing Tuesday arrived on the fourth anniversary of Prince’s death — but as timing goes, an even more important factor may have been how ready viewers were to see some full produced live music after a month’s worth of mostly seeing stars turning in acoustic performances from their living rooms.

To mark the fourth anniversary of Prince’s death this week, the producers of the Grammys put together an all-star tribute to the Purple One with performances of his songs by John Legend, the Foo Fighters, St. Vincent, Morris Day and the Time, and many others. Strangely absent from the festivities, though, was “What’s New Pussycat?” belter Tom Jones, who experienced a late-career renaissance in the late Eighties, in part thanks to a sleek, hyper–New Wave cover of Prince’s “Kiss” that he recorded with Art of Noise. It was all about the music — in Empire‘s case, a music dynasty — on Tuesday night in primetime. Fox aired its quasi-series finale of Empire, which wrapped on a high note earning a 0.8 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 2.94 million viewers. It may not have been the exact finale envisioned for the musical drama from Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, but with the best numbers in the demo since mid-October, it was an upbeat way to end its six-season run.

IFC’s quest to be the network with the most fictional TV shows now has more material to show for it. On Friday, it unveiled the first full look at “Sherman’s Showcase,” a new series from Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin.
To help give context for the premise of a long-running sketch/variety series that never actually existed, the pair have enlisted plenty of famous names for help. John Legend looks to be filling a similar role to Helen Mirren on “Documentary Now!,” helping guide viewers through the decade-spanning history of a show within a show. Salahuddin stars as Sherman McDaniels, the proprietor of this fictional comedy archive, stretching from the ’70s on forward.
Like the shows from those early decades that this show is riffing on, it seems like “Sherman’s Showcase” will have an array of musical, dance, and sketch performances fitting in with each passing era.

Even among jaded music industry types — hardened by years, if not decades, of quasi-authentic glad-handing and perpetual cynicism — there are few events more whimsical than Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala. Every year, on the night before the award show, the record label kingmaker hosts approximately 1,000 people for an event that combines myriad performances with Davis honoring and anointing his favorite industry people — many of whom have long locked down “legend” status — alongside various sports and political figures.
But for all the paparazzi and glitz that Davis ensures each year, it...

“Welcome to the city of El Dorado, Arkansas, U.S.A.” reads the banner on a collapsible stage where a local band is plugging in their instruments. It’s a clear September weekend in a quaint patch of southwest Arkansas. The town’s name became allegorical in the 1920s when a prodigious oil well was discovered, making it the epicenter of the Arkansas oil boom. By 1930, El Dorado was the wealthiest town in America, a cosmopolitan respite in the vast flatness of middle America. The only hint of that glory today,...

Fans of hair metal and Hot 100 rap are in for a strange treat this October when Lita Ford, Bret Michaels and Sammy Hagar open for “Bodak Yellow” rapper and current Rolling Stone cover star Cardi B. They just have to figure out how to get to El Dorado, Arkansas first.
From October 18th – 20th, an unlikely cross-pollination of musicians will descend upon the small, southern town for its annual MusicFest. The newly-established Murphy Arts District brings major acts to intimate venues at a significantly lower price point relative to arenas in major music markets.

To most of the outside world, Prince was shy, standoffish, and barely spoke above a whisper, if he spoke at all. Among friends, he was a comedian with a bottomless bag of gags, pranks and practical jokes. In observance of the late musician’s birthday — he would have been 60 today — we pay tribute to his comic side with seldom-told tales from bandmates, friends and others close to him collected over the past two years. We hope to make this an annual article, so hopefully there are many more like this to come (hit me if you’ve got a good one). Thanks to everyone who shared their memories — there’s no better way to start than with this one:
Marc Anthony (Singer/friend)
He was absolutely hysterical. His image was so serious, but he loved to laugh. That’s the first thing that took me aback — how funny and how quick he was.

Prince’s longtime friend, collaborator and one-time fiancée Sheila E. says she had a good reason for not wanting the late singer to make a cameo in Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl Lii performance as a hologram.
“I said no. I felt it was just too soon. The hologram was weird, and Prince did tell me make sure ‘nobody ever does a hologram of me.’ ‘If you’re still here, make sure nobody does a hologram,'” the 60-year-old musician told Entertainment Tonight on Sunday.
“He thought it was very demonic,” she continued. “That’s his spiritual beliefs.” (Prince was a Jehovah’s Witness.

It’s been one year since Prince‘s death, and as a tribute to the legendary musician, his friend Morris Day of the band the Time has released a song dedicated to his friend.
“It’s a heartfelt tribute and video,” Day, 59, tells People of “Over That Rainbow,” which is co-produced by Snoop Dogg. “It was just my way of saying goodbye.”
In the aftermath of Prince’s death, Day says “a lot of people” approached him to say something about his friend, who he first met in the early ’70s when they were teens and part of a band called Grand Central.

The Grammy producers every year tout some of their most anticipated performances as “Grammy Moments” – but some of this year’s most memorable moments weren’t planned at all.
It was Adele’s night to shine, and her sweep of the top Grammy categories – best song, record and album – even surprised the singer, who was embarrassed enough by her good fortune (and Beyonce’s loss) to accidentally break one of her trophies at the end of the night. Adele opened the show with a dramatic rendering of her smash hit “Hello,” earning a standing ovation, which perhaps foretold the single’s success later in the evening.

The wedding, in cinematic terms — the opportunity to present dozens of extras of mingling amidst an ever-expanding backdrop (e.g. the Visconti quotations from The Godfather or The Deer Hunter) — is, to say the least, a very exciting opportunity. Though within Brooks, Meadows and Lovely Faces, the idea of a wedding points to a pressure for national unity when the narrative in question is all about splintering: separate couples all living in fear of their true feelings for others in the shadow of class and age. This truly Sirk-ian impulse sets the stage for Reefat and Galal, our two lead brothers in the small Egyptian town of Belqas: the former a lovable, actually illiterate oaf; the latter a slick lady’s man with a scarred record due to dodging military service eight years prior. Both work as chefs under their father, Yehia, who has a catering service for special events.

What do you say about Purple Rain that hasn't already been said? Not only is it one of the greatest music films of all time, but it's one of the defining films of the 1980s and earned Prince an Oscar. The soundtrack spent nearly a full half-year at Number One on the Billboard charts, sold 20 million copies worldwide and won two Grammys. But as with all things Prince, that's not the full story. A number of truly excellent books and articles have been written about the making of Purple Rain, and we're here to share some of the best bits of them with you.

It's entirely possible to be a massive Prince fan — to recognize him as the most influential musician since James Brown and the most dexterous since Stevie Wonder — and still admit that he never quite cracked his ambition to be a movie star. His three fictional films — the iconic Purple Rain and the forgotten Under the Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge — never enraptured the way his albums did, partly because there was always something otherworldly and ephemeral about Prince Rogers Nelson that never translated to the screen. Like his fellow Minnesotan Bob Dylan,...
