It’s a test of endurance for both parent and child while the world is on coronavirus lockdown. Fortunately, there are many kind folks in the world providing some moments of social distancing fun. One of them is Josh Gad, the voice of Frozen’s beloved snowman, Olaf, who is reaching out to read online and provide a momentary respite from the mental chores of involuntary confinement.
Gad has been reading each night since March 13 via Twitter. He notes, “Since we’re all stuck at home right now, I figured we would have a little fun together So, I’m going to see how this goes, but I decided I’m gonna read to you and your children—or just you, depending on what you prefer. I’m not gonna pass judgment right now since the world is a little bit of a hot mess.”

“Believe it or not, I’m sitting right here, two weeks in the future,” Oyelowo says. “But as long as you’re alive, you can change things.”

Exclusive: Jacob Aaron Estes’ supernatural thriller Don’t Let Go will be released theatrically by Blumhouse Tilt, Universal’s Otl Releasing and Tom Ortenberg’s Briarcliff Entertainment on August 30.
The pic, which stars David Oyelowo, Storm Reid, Mykelti Williamson and Brian Tyree Henry, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival back in January under the title Relive. In Don’t Let Go, detective Jack Radcliff (Oyelowo) receives a shocking phone call from his recently-murdered niece Ashley (Reid). Working together across time, they race to solve her murder before it can happen. Estes, who made his feature directorial debut with 2004’s Mean Creek, wrote the screenplay off a story he co-penned with Drew Daywalt. Shinelle Azoroh, Byron Mann, April Grace and Alfred Molina also star.

It’s hard to believe it’s almost time for a new year of the Sundance Film Festival, but we’re now less than two months away, and this writer is extremely excited to head to Park City once again, especially after digging into Sundance’s initial lineup announcement today. Not only does their Midnight slate look insanely great, but there are a ton of films running in Sundance’s other programming tracks that I am beyond excited to see in January.
Some of the highlights from today’s lineup announcement include Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile which chronicles the life of Ted Bundy (played by Zac Efron) through the experiences of his girlfriend; Paradise Hills, which stars Emma Roberts, Milla Jovovich, and Awkwafina; Relive from producer Jason Blum; Dan Gilroy’s Buzzsaw; and the Alien-themed documentary Memory. This week on the couch we have James Roday and Jimmi Simpson watching The Cat o' Nine Tails. James is best known as Shawn Spencer on Psych, which recently wrapped up its eight-year run. He just finished his feature directorial debut, a horror-comedy called Gravy. Jimmi is best known as "that guy who you've seen in everything." Some of his recent projects include House of Cards, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Knights of Badassdom. The Cat o' Nine Tails was only the second film directed by horror auteur Dario Argento. A rather straightforward crime thriller starring Karl Malden as a blind journalist, Cat o' Nine Tails is considered a giallo film, a sort of stylized Italian mystery film that takes its name from the cheap pulp mystery novels of the first half of the 20th century. "Giallo" is Italian for "yellow," and pulp paperbacks originally used cheap, yellow covers.

This week, we've got actors Samm Levine ('Inglourious Basterds') and Amber Benson ('Buffy The Vampire Slayer') providing commentary for William Lustig's "slasher" cult classic 'Maniac,' starring the late, great Joe Spinell.

This week in The Vault, we welcome back Heidi Honeycutt and Jill Kill to discuss William Lustig's 1996 film Uncle Sam.
Uncle Sam is the story of a veteran named Sam who, three years after dying in the line of duty, is returned home where he inexplicably reanimates, dresses up like the patriotic icon, and goes on a killing spree. This strange little direct-to-video slasher flick came out around the time that VHS was on its way out and DVD was taking over the home video market. While he is still an active producer, Uncle Sam is the last feature Lustig directed.
Be sure to head over to The Vault and enjoy Uncle Sam.
Previous Vault commentaries:

- Deep Red with video commentary by Greg McDougall & Josh Thompson

In this week's all new edition of 'The Vault,' we're going back to one of the Italian master of horror's most well regarded pieces of cinematic work. That's right. We're talking about Dario Argento and the movie in question is 'Opera!' After directing a slew of classics such as 'Deep Red,' 'Suspiria,' 'Tenebre' and 'Phenomena,' Argento returned with 'Opera,' one of his most ambitious films yet in which a budding opera singer (Cristina Marsillach) is stalked by a deranged fan hellbent on making her famous. Why Watch? The upstanding, not at all imbalanced folks at Bloody Cuts recently held a short film competition that revolved around the theme “Who’s There?”. There was a sickening amount of fantastic entries, but this one from Ryan Thompson was chosen by a panel of experts (including me, Joe Dante, Gale Anne Hurd, Drew Daywalt, Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan and more). Play Time is pure atmosphere. It’s an excellent example of production design and editing meant specifically to unnerve and disarm. The plot is merely a scare delivery device: there’s a ruckus downstairs, so a young woman goes to investigate. Although, if you want to think deeply enough, the creature imagery could be psychologically appropriate for a lone woman in a big house. Probably best to watch this after you’ve brushed your teeth and put on your pajamas. What Will It Cost? About 3 minutes. A New Short Film Every Weekday...

Over the past year the Jumpcut café has become the premier venue for independent horror in Los Angeles. Where else can you see, without much fanfare, premier screenings of shorts by luminaries such as Drew Daywalt and Rebekah McKendry, shorts that are so new that they don't even have IMDb pages yet?
Witches Brew, directed by Rebekah McKendry, is an ultra short, hilarious and adorable Halloween film. Children's horror is a difficult thing to pull off, because there has to be a perfect balance of childlike wonder and horror or the thing won't work. In Witches Brew McKendry successfully utilizes the naiveté of childhood to create something both cute and scary. I should also add that Actress Jessica Cameron gives the most appealing performance of her career so far.

Oh boy, you’re going to need a lot more than the “luck of the Irish” to make it through Red Clover – maybe some Irish whiskey, Irish coffee, or a whole slew of Irish car bombs? The sillier of a mood you’re in for this Celtic horror film the better, because you’re going to have to make your own fun with this one. Suffering from almost every horror cliché in the book, and filled with distractingly laughable performances, director Drew Daywalt’s Leprechaun revival is a curse of its own, haunting viewers with a legend better left buried.
Karen O’Hara (Courtney Halverson) is out hunting with her grandfather (William Devane) when she stumbles upon a bright red four-leaf clover, which she picks out of curiosity – bad idea. Right after plucking the oddly colored clover, a fawn-like being emerges from the ground, and Karen finds a strange marking on her hand.

There's no doubt the title alone of Anthony C. Ferrante's Sharknado just begs to be remembered. How could you not, right? Since we saw the movie weeks ago, the title has been nagging at us. We knew we'd heard that moniker before. Turns out we were exactly right.
In 2012 the Syfy channel aired the After Dark Original film Leprechaun's Revenge, also known as Red Clover, which was directed by Dread Central favorite Drew Daywalt and written by Sharknado director Ferrante, there was a line that literally announces the coming of Sharknado. It takes place in a scene about thirty-five minutes in...

After Dark Films, the company behind the “8 Films To Die For” horror film series (aka After Dark Horrorfest), has revealed that the fourth entry in their second “After Dark Originals” lineup will be the cult thriller Children of Sorrow. Directed by Jourdan McClure (read our interview with McClure about his film Rogue River) and written by Ryan Finnerty (Rogue River, Smosh), Children of Sorrow stars veteran horror actor Bill Oberst Jr. (who shocked the social media world in the interactive thriller Take This Lollipop) as cult leader Simon Leach, whose desert commune seems like the promised land for his troubled followers... who are unaware of his more sinister intentions. “Belongingness can be a terrifying subject, even more so when acceptance is disingenuous,” McClure says. “Children of Sorrow is the nightmare version of that." 2013 is slowly shaping up to be a really solid year for horror thus far, and one of the funnest local events to kick off at the beginning of this year has been the monthly Horror Movie Trivia Night sponsored by our friends at Fangoria and Shock Till You Drop and held at the Jumpcut Cafe in Studio City. The competition (which takes place on the 3rd Thursday of the month) has built up so much buzz that all 3 months of the event have reached venue capacity in record time. And this shouldn't be surprising considering you've got hosts Ryan Turek and Rebekah McKendry, reps from two of the biggest horror entities out there, paired up with the Jumpcut Cafe (which Drew Daywalt wrote about in a recent 'School Of Fear' blog as being La's "horror haven") as it's prime location.

Why Watch? To its credit, Craigslist has plenty of warnings. Watch out for scams, people who demand that you wire money and terrifying things living inside the free chair you just snagged from a kind stranger. Drew Daywalt and his nightmarish visions are no stranger to this column. Neither is A.J. Bowen, who co-stars in this quick story of a young woman (Kaylee Score) just off the boat in Los Angeles trying to outfit her apartment with some gratis furniture. The result is a keen display of horror construction and special make-up effects. There’s a slightly indulgent jump scare just before the conclusion, but otherwise, it’s about as clean and effective as a scare can get. Plus, there’s a twisted creativity behind the horrifying truth of the chair. This short might do for sitting in your living room what Jaws did for hanging around with Roy Scheider. Hat...

We're just all kinds of thrilled to announce that Drew Daywalt, award-winning horror filmmaker and resident FEARnet blogger, has signed a deal with producer Eric B. Fleischman of Ebf Productions (Ritual, Two-Bit Waltz) to direct The Hurting Man, a supernatural horror feature based on his own original screenplay. If that news isn't awesome enough on its own, we should add that another genre luminary, Larry Fessenden (Habit, Wendigo, The Last Winter) will serve as Executive Producer on the film. In case you've been... I don't know, on Mars or something over the past few years, Drew burst onto the horror scene in 2007 with his award-winning short film Bedfellows, and since then he has directed dozens of acclaimed short films under the banner of Daywalt Fear Factory, episodes of the MTV horror-comedy series Death Valley, the webseries Camera Obscura and original programming for Tony Valenzuela's horror-centric channel BlackBox TV, and much more.

Like most horror fans, I'm not always pro remake. There are some films that simply should not be remade. However, I am supportive of remaking a film if the creative team behind the reboot can bring something new to the table or improve upon what the original film did, in some way. Case in point, Tobe Hooper improved on the source material in his 2004 remake of The Toolbox Murders. Hooper's remake was a more cohesive film than the original and was more effective at keeping its viewer engaged throughout the film. The original was poorly paced with the entire middle of the film being exhaustively sluggish. As for bringing something new to the table, James Gunn and Zak Snyder didn't outdo the original Dawn of the Dead with their 2004 reimagining, but that's not what the duo was trying for. Instead, they provided a highly enjoyable companion piece with their reboot...
