Country strong—and fabulous! While there’s plenty to love about Nashville’s Rayna (Connie Britton) and Juliette’s (Hayden Panettiere) sequin-dripping stage costumes, it’s impossible to deny that the ladies’ casual clothes—namely, their jeans, always tailored to a T—are insanely chic, too. The country series’ stars have one woman to thank for the baby blues that help them flaunt their assets: Nashville’s costume designer, Susie DeSanto. “We are probably single-handedly keeping J Brand in business!” DeSanto told Us Weekly, reporting in from the Nashville-based set between fittings. “We have lots of their [...]...

Juliette Barnes is a sexy country queen, and she’s staying that way! As pregnant Hayden Panettiere approaches her due date, there isn’t any hiding that baby bump as she films her hit ABC show, Nashville, on which she plays wild child country star Juliette Barnes. In part because of that, Nashville’s writers decided to write the petite actress’ pregnancy into her storyline, which gave costume designer Susie DeSanto quite the job to do! Barnes, a teen powerhouse-turned-sensitive vocalist, has been known to rock a sparkly dress and a [...]...

"Nashville" is that true rarity -- a musical drama in which actors sing and look fabulous doing so. ABC's Wednesday series deals with adult situations and breaks away for full songs, featuring three very different women, all country singers, flaunting very different styles.
"I did a ton of research looking at templates for country music stars who would be models for Rayna Jaymes or Juliette Barnes," costume designer Susie DeSanto says of the characters played by Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere.
This season, Scarlett (Clare Bowen) has a much larger role and a distinctive style.
"Nashville is small but sophisticated," DeSanto tells Zap2it. "It is definitely a Southern place. It is because of the music scene here and the songwriters and the Opry."
Rayna has a more diverse wardrobe than the others because she has so many facets to her life: superstar, mom, politician's daughter, and former wife of the mayor.

House of Cards costume designer Tom Broecker may have an Emmy nod under his belt for his work on the first season of the hit Netflix show, but as of Saturday night the industry vet has a statue to add to his accolade shelf, too -- a Costume Designer's Guild Award for Outstanding Contemporary Television Series. The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

Finally the Cdg nominations have been announced, and while they right some of the wrongs made by Oscar and chiefly BAFTA, ample opportunity to reward some really creative and effective costume design has once again been overlooked.
We have indicated at length our views on the Academy and BAFTA’s nominations (Here and Here) so in the interests of not sounding like a broken record we shall stick to the facts. Well, perhaps just the odd observation… Nominations below:

From cowboy boots to corsets, costume designer Susie DeSanto has the leading ladies of the new ABC series "Nashville" covered.
"I love the talent and the artists Nashville attracts," DeSanto tells Zap2it. "One of the things I like about the script is the different layers of characters. ... Rayna (Connie Britton) is really interesting to dress because she has so many sides to her besides [being] a superstar. She is a mom, and there's a part of her that is connected to the singer-songwriters and the people who are really the poets of Nashville."
Although a smaller market, Nashville, Tenn., is a sophisticated town that is home to just-for-women Western store Betty Boots and custom corset company Ani&Ari.
"Betty Boots is the place to go," DeSanto says. "It's right downtown on Broadway, and they have some amazing boots. ... Ani&Ari are local girls who make corsets for Miranda Lambert and...

Jennifer Garner’s costumes in 13 Going On 30 (2004) are some of the most fun for a romantic comedy of recent years. In a plot which sees gawky teenager Jenna Rink (Garner) flash thirteen years into the future to find herself editor of Poise fashion magazine, it is unsurprising if the clothes she wears are somewhat…ahem….‘colourful’.
At the start of the film, when Jenna is indeed 13, there is an array of 1980s fashions on show, including pale dyed denims, bejewelled off-the-shoulder tops and colours so bright they are practically luminous. Costume designer Susie DeSanto (Miss Congeniality, 2000) really went to town. When time jumps forward, however, and Jenna is “thirty, flirty and thriving”, she has to learn to adjust to not only her adult figure, but also the fashions of 2004.
With an impressive wardrobe of designer clothes and strappy shoes, it is hard to imagine she can go far wrong. Yet...
