[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the S.W.A.T. Season 7 finale “Twenty Squad.”] The future looks bright for Twenty Squad. S.W.A.T. ended its seventh (and nearly final) season with a bang, with Hondo (Shemar Moore) putting himself at great risk to keep Los Angeles safe—and the city took notice. Meanwhile, Deacon (Jay Harrington), though retired, once again helped out, and by the end of the episode, he was back with S.W.A.T. Also sticking around on 20 Squad? Tan (David Lim), Powell (Anna Enger Ritch), and Alfaro (Niko Pepaj). And Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit) is letting Hondo pick whoever he wants to fill the sixth spot. Below, executive producer Andrew Dettmann breaks down the finale and teases what’s ahead. Shemar told me that nothing was changed about the finale, but if you ...

While for the most part, “everything was positive” about finding out S.W.A.T. had been uncanceled for a second time, there was one heartbreaking part, according to executive producer Andrew Dettmann. During Season 7, Hondo (Shemar Moore) has had to say goodbye to three members of 20 Squad. Street (Alex Russell) transferred to Long Beach, Luca (Kenny Johnson) was forced to retire after an injury when he interrupted a robbery off-duty, and Deacon (Jay Harrington) has chosen to retire. While Harrington is still around as Deacon adjusts to his next chapter, such is not the case for Russell or Johnson, who both had farewell episodes. “I would love to see them back,” Dettmann tells TV Insider. “The one heartbreaking thing was when we were told this is the end, Season 7, giving Street and Alex that goodbye, making part of Long Beach Pd, giving Luca that heartbreaking goodbye that Kenny played so well, those...

The S.W.A.T. Season 7 finale, which wrapped filming last week — just two days after the surprise un-cancellation news came through — as written left things “wide open” for more adventures for Hondo & Co.
S.W.A.T. showrunner Andrew Dettmann had told TVLine ahead of the seventh and “final” season, “Look, it was presented to us as definitively final. But I’ve always said, as I talk to the actors and the other writers here, everybody holds out hope. Your show’s not gone till your show’s gone, right? So, we’re approaching it to make it a wonderful farewell if that turns out to be what it is.

Miracles do happen.
We’ve just witnessed one with the renewal of S.W.A.T, which was previously canceled by CBS.
Yes, that’s right, CBS announced today that it has renewed the hit drama series S.W.A.T. for the 2024-2025 season. The series will return for its eighth year on the Network.
Who had this on their bingo cards?
We’ve been riding for so long on the cancellation of popular shows on other networks — even after they’re renewed — that this news hits us like a shower of warm rose petals.
It’s concerning that during S.W.A.T. Season 7, many beloved characters have already said their goodbyes, so either they’ll be looking to walk that back or introduce us to a new team.
That’s a risky move for a series that had already been on the chopping block (and lost its head) once. Well, twice if you consider the original...

S.W.A.T. is not ending after all. Beating the odds a second time, the action drama has been renewed for the 2024-25 season, with Shemar Moore set to continue as star and executive producer. I hear Season 8 will consist of 22 episodes.
The news comes a year after S.W.A.T. was canceled before the decision was dramatically reversed a couple of days later with a renewal for a seventh and final season. This time, the network is not boxing itself in and is leaving the door open to more by not branding 8 as the series’ final season.
The surprise renewal, which sources said came down pretty quickly over the last couple of days, also comes as S.W.A.T is wrapping production on its seventh season. Moore hinted at the drama not necessarily ending by posting set photos on his Ig story yesterday with the caption “Season 7 finale will be [fire emoji],” not referring to the episode as series finale.

Turns out reports of “S.W.A.T’s” cancellation have been greatly exaggerated. CBS has renewed the cop drama for Season 8 despite announcing its seventh season would be its last nearly a year ago.
The latest drama marks the second time “S.W.A.T” has technically escaped cancellation, with CBS initially axing the show before announcing it would return for one last run. The original decision to cancel “S.W.A.T” came down to licensing fees. After Sony and CBS were unable to come to terms in 2023, the show was canceled, but they eventually worked out the deal for a final season with a reduced episode count.

NBC’s Chicago Med will have new leadership heading into its 10th season.
Co-showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, who have been with the drama since it debuted in 2015, are stepping down at the end of the show’s current run. The married couple have helmed Med for nine seasons and more than 170 episodes to date. A new showrunner will be named later.
That’s an unusually long tenure for any series, let alone one hailing from Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment, which frequently shakes up operations both in front of and behind the camera. Frolov and Schneider came in ahead of Chicago Med’s series premiere, taking over for Andrew Dettman. In contrast, Med’s fellow Chicago series, Fire and Pd, have changed showrunners multiple times over the course of their runs.

When it comes to CBS’ S.W.A.T. somehow staying liquid beyond this final season, “everybody holds out hope,” says showrunner Andrew Dettmann. But if this is in fact the cop show’s swan song, the EP is planning a “wonderful farewell” for Hondo & Co.

Some big changes will be in store when S.W.A.T. returns for its seventh and final season later this month.
With the show preparing to end the storylines of all the characters we’ve grown to love over the years, some won’t even make it to the series finale.
TV Line reports that original cast members Kenneth “Kenny” Johnson (who plays Dominique Luca) and Alex Russell (Jim Street) have been demoted to recurring players for S.W.A.T. Season 7.
While the decision is a shocker because they’ve both been with the show since its 2017 launch, there is a reason for them getting pre-series finale departures.
Series showrunner Andrew Dettmann told the outlet that he decided that due to the truncated 13-episode order. It allowed the creatives to give them episodes “focused on their characters and the evolution of their storylines.”
Indeed, S.W.A.T. does command a massive cast, so trying to find...

More good news for S.W.A.T. The series, which just got a renewal for a seventh and final season by CBS, also has a new streaming home. Netflix has made a substantial deal with lead studio Sony Pictures TV for the first five seasons of the action drama starring Shemar Moore, which will begin streaming in the U.S. on May 17. The current sixth season of the series is expected to join them on the platform in the fall.
As part of CBS’ deal for S.W.A.T. (and its other shows), current seasons of the network’s series are available on Paramount+ for their duration and a few months after they end their broadcast run. S.W.A.T.’s first three seasons are also currently on Hulu.

“Hondo is being Hondo, but in jungles, rivers, even encountering elephants,” teases S.W.A.T. executive producer Andrew Dettmann of brave team leader Hondo Harrelson’s (Shemar Moore) action-packed adventures in the back-to-back opening episodes of Season 6. Hondo, gutsy family man Deacon Kay (Jay Harrington), and tough Victor Tan (David Lim) go overseas to Thailand (shot on location!) for a joint training exercise with Thai S.W.A.T. Jonathan Davino Later, Hondo and his pregnant girlfriend Nichelle (Rochelle Aytes) head north to Chiang Mai for a babymoon with his old military friend Joe, who works for the U.N. drug interdiction program. “It spirals into a dangerous situation [with the drug trade],” Dettmann reveals. Last week, more than 400 TV creators and showrunners — all of them women — sent letters to top executives at Hollywood studios demanding that specific safety protocols be put in place for pregnant employees in states where abortion has been outlawed, or soon will be. Now, letters of support signed by 594 men — including J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Greg Berlanti, Donald Glover, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi and Ryan Murphy — have been sent to the same companies.
The text of the letter is short, simply saying the undersigned stand with their “female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a response from our employers regarding the imminent crisis” at hand. It was delivered by replying-all to the first letter, and was sent to Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, Apple, NBC Universal, Amazon, Lionsgate and AMC.
These activist correspondences have been instigated by the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs decison, which overturned Roe v.

When Dick Wolf kicked off the “One Chicago” world on NBC in 2012 with “Chicago Fire” — a spinoff of the “Law & Order” universe — it was a bit of a boys’ club.
Derek Haas, Matt Olmstead and Michael Brandt led “Fire” as showrunners; less than two years later, “Chicago P.D.” premiered with Olmstead at the head. In 2015 came the third leg of the franchise with “Chicago Med” under Andrew Dettmann, Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov. Dettmann exited after Season 1 and Schneider and Frolov, a married couple, have led it ever since.
Now, women are at the helm of all three shows.
For many years, Frolov was the first female showrunner on the franchise. Although they’d never met Wolf before, when they first sat down together, they pitched a pilot idea and he set up a meeting with the network.

With the fall TV season about to start, broadcast networks are getting their houses in order — and taking out the trash. NBC dropped plans Monday for a revival of the ’90s comedy “Coach” slated for midseason. Cutting “Coach” was the latest move by a broadcaster to fix or get rid of a show that wasn’t working as expected. August saw the exit of showrunners from four upcoming broadcast series: Greg Malins from Fox’s “The Grinder,” Andrew Dettman from NBC’s “Chicago Med,” Jennifer Schuur and Josh Reims from ABC’s “The Catch,” and Cynthia Cidre from ABC’s “Blood & Oil.

A new doctor is scrubbing in on Chicago Med. Pretty Little Liars actress Torrey DeVitto has been cast in the series-regular role of pregnant pediatrician Lilly Manning. “When we meet her, she’s very pregnant,” Chicago Med showrunner Andrew Dettman told reporters at TCA summer press tour yesterday. “She’s just a really sweet, warm, midwest [woman who] planned it out, studied, worked hard, got everything to where she wanted – the husband and everything going the way it’s supposed to be going. But this is her first child, and it seems to me, at the end of the day, there’s a little bit of denial [about] the fact that she’s about to undergo an enormous change in her life.” DeVitto’s casting comes on the heels of Laurie Holden’s exit from Chicago Med; however, DeVitto will not be replacing Holden. Instead, she is one of three new characters the NBC drama is casting.

Two small-town murders, connected yet separated by a quarter of a century, will bring Treat Williams to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for a guest stint on Wednesday's season finale, "Dead in His Tracks." (10/9c on CBS). The former Everwood star plays security guard Sam Bishop, who was an investigator on the first murder back in 1989 but retired from cop work in frustration when he couldn't solve the case. Now Bishop has reappeared and D.B. Russell (Ted Danson) is leery of him — but suspicion soon turns to awe.
"It turns out Bishop was a man way ahead of his time — a proto-csi," says Andrew Dettmann, who wrote the episode.
