Green Day’s pop-up show at Anaheim’s House of Blues on Tuesday night left their set list a complete mystery. The concert was announced with only 24 hours notice, with no prior appearances in the past month for the audience to base their expectations. The surprise set allowed the band to unexpectedly revive two American Idiot deep cuts for the first time in nearly 20 years.
The discography deep-dive portion of the set list kicked off with something of a fake out. Green Day launched into “Give Me Novacaine,” which they...

Seconds after Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson entered the holding room where presenters and performers at Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala were to take this picture, someone became starstruck — but who that was might surprise you.
“It’s Jelly Roll!” Wilson shouted excitedly as she saw the Grammy-nominated singer-rapper. But the feeling was mutual, as Jelly Roll later murmured, if only to himself, about the surrealness of the moment. He was standing in proximity to Hanks and Wilson as Dionne Warwick sat nearby and members of Green Day were hanging out while everyone waited for one of music’s greatest architects — Davis himself — to arrive.
The interaction was just one of several “pinch-me” moments as the likes of The Isley Brothers, Maluma, Josh Groban, Lainey Wilson and many more came together to take a snapshot with Davis and commemorate the night of amazing music that was to come at the legendary party,...

Green Day’s latest album, Saviors, has arrived, and though you’ll easily find the new tracks on a number of algorithmic playlists, you won’t get any brownie points from the band for getting your music that way. In a new interview, the pop-punk trio shared their opinion: “finding your music via algorithms [is] just lazy.”
The comments come from a new discussion between Green Day and The Sun, in which bassist Mike Dirnt explained that he likes to “organically find” new things. “Social media is great for kids, but if you’re finding your music via algorithms then that’s just lazy,” reads his full quote. “All I can say is just clear your search history to find new [stuff].”
For his part, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explained that his distaste for algorithms centers on how they can manipulate content. “With all the algorithms that people live on, there’s so much false information,...

As captured on social media earlier this week, Green Day hit the New York City Subway to showcase songs from their new album, Saviors. The punk band joined The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon at the 50th Street station, where they dressed in disguise to perform the band’s hit 1994 “Basket Case” and a cover of Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love.”
Once they started playing, of course, the band stripped off their disguises. Fallon grabbed a tambourine to take part in the performance.

Green Day will perform two of their classic albums, Dookie and American Idiot, in full at each stop of their upcoming stadium tour.
Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt confirmed the band’s plans in an interview with Rolling Stone. “What a fuckin’ moment it’s going to be,” Dirnt said. “We’ve never done anything like this before. And there’s a really good chance we’ll never do it again.”
Green Day’s “The Saviors Tour” coincides with the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot. The band has played Dookie and American Idiot in full on a special few occasions over the years, but never before so on a full-fledged tour.

The “best part” of Green Day updating lyrics to its 2004 protest anthem “American Idiot” during the band’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance was “that it provoked conversation,” according to bassist Mike Dirnt.
While appearing on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, the trio performed a collection of their hits past and present, including the title track to their critically acclaimed, chart-topping 2004 album American Idiot. The co-founding member recently spoke to Rolling Stone about the band’s performance of the track — and the backlash it garnered — while discussing the punk rockers’ nearly 40 year career.
Like “Holiday,” the song was among the explicitly political tracks on the band’s self-described punk rock opera concept album, which explored a lower-middle-class antihero known as the “Jesus of Suburbia.” The song addressed the disillusionment of a young generation during the George W. Bush administration following events like 9/11 and the Iraq War,...

Ringo Starr took the lead on The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” but he didn’t initially want to sing it. While his bandmates wrote the song with Starr’s vocal range in mind, he felt that the high note at the end was beyond his capabilities. His bandmates rallied around him to help him sing the song in its entirety.
The Beatles had to convince Ringo Starr to sing ‘With a Little Help From My Friends’
Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote “With a Little Help From My Friends” for Starr to sing. When it came time to record the vocals, though, he was hesitant. He attempted to leave the studio before he could record it.

“Back then, I just wanted to write songs I could be proud of and be able to play in five years,” Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong told Rolling Stone in 2014 of his mindset two decades prior.
He would of course achieve that and a whole lot more. In 1994, Green Day accomplished what seemed unthinkable for young punks before them: They became an international phenomenon. With the release of the bratty, rousing Dookie, the trio not only made their major-label debut; they created a new youth movement as grunge was beginning its decline.

The high-intensity punk rock record brings the band back to the forefront of relevance with their lead single “Bang Bang” and catchy pop tracks like “Still Breathing” and “Bouncing Off the Wall.” The band also shows that they haven’t lost the fire when it comes to television performances, as Green Day recently brought the house down with their appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Green Day emulates that sheer raw emotion in the live rendition of “Bang Bang,” and it measures up to the studio version without a flaw. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sounds at his best while manning the microphone, and with bassist Mike Dirnt’s booming bass lines, drummer Tre Cool doesn’t miss a beat. Overall, their “Bang Bang” TV debut does a great job at...

As iconic and as legendary as Green Day are, they are not invincible. Despite genre defining records such as Warning or Dookie – or even their magnum opus, American Idiot – they are still subject to scrutiny when it’s warranted. For the latter half of 2012 … well, it was warranted. The group took a risk, maybe too big of a risk, on the trilogy of records known as ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! that were released in the fall of 2012, and they weren’t even part of the same collection.
Each its own separate full-length and each its own selection in the band’s discography, the records maybe caught even more heat than if they were just released as a triple disc. To say the lackluster albums tarnished the band’s twenty year legacy may be harsh, but there was a point when most thought that ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! were simply a...

The Grammy Awards allow all genres of music to gather together under one roof; rock, pop, country, rap and all the rest meet up for the sole purpose of picking up awards. But when viewers tune in to the 2016 awards on Monday, they'll see a style of performance that's only rarely been part of the Grammy awards: Broadway. The show's opening number will be performed by the cast of Hamilton, the hit musical based on the life of Alexander Hamilton. While the Grammy Awards themselves will be given out at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the cast of Hamilton...

Perhaps the biggest standing ovation given by Paramount Theater audiences all week at SXSW was when Green Day took the stage Friday alongside director Doug Hamilton to present the world premiere of the documentary Broadway Idiot. Bassist Mike Dirnt did the talking for the group, thanking the audience for coming to the show. “Welcome to our nightmare,” he said happily, before handing off the microphone to lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. The crowd held their breath for a half second, waiting to hear him speak, but instead he tossed the mic to a festival director and the band made themselves scarce.

Billie Joe Armstrong's bandmate wasn't surprised by his public meltdown last year that led to him going to rehab for 30 days. Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt has revealed the group ignored warning signs that the 41-year-old 'Basket Case' singer was struggling to cope with his addictions to alcohol and drugs because they were too busy. He told Rolling Stone magazine: 'We all turned a blind eye to it - 'Everyone, deal with your own s**t.' Because we were working so hard.' Mike, 40, said the turning point was when the group's front man had a breakdown on stage in Las Vegas last September, when the group was performing at the star-studded 'iHeartRadio Music Festival', during which he screamed profanities...

Good news for Green Day fans! After multiple canceled appearances and a postponed tour, the band is getting back on schedule.
"I just wanted to thank you all for the love [and] support you've showed for the past few months," lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote in a note posted to his Instagram account. "Believe me, it hasn't gone unnoticed and I'm eternally grateful to have such an amazing set of friends and family. I'm getting better everyday."
"So now, without further ado, the show must go on," Armstrong continued. "We can't wait to get on the road and live out loud! Our passion has only grown stronger. Happy new year. We love you all. Rage and love."
Finally, to silence any doubts about the band's future, Armstrong added, "P.S. Green Day tour in March."

Green Day’s “Dos!,” the second in the band’s trilogy, opens with Billie Joe Armstrong gently backed by an acoustic guitar as he sweetly asks if he’ll “see you tonight.” Then the gloves come off. The next 35 minutes are a manic midnight ramble through a bacchanalian night out as Armstrong and band mates Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt ain’t looking for nothing but a good time. If “American Idiot” and “21st Century Breakdown” were about broad social themes, “Uno!” and “Dos!” have no such sweeping ambition....unless getting laid counts. (The album is streaming in full here now). And of course it...

The video mixes footage from the final entry in the “Twilight” series with scenes of the band recording, hanging out and performing to massive crowds as Armstrong croons, “Don’t look away from the arms of love.” Much of Green Day’s new output recalls their three-minute pop/punk anthems from the ’90s, but “The Forgotten” is the type of big-ballad emoting the band has also long maintained in their arsenal, from “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” to “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
Much of the video’s movie footage displays Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) utilizing her newfound vampire powers, running, jumping and otherwise supernaturally powering through the lush forests fans have come to recognize from the series.
“The Forgotten” marks Green Day’s first foray into the world of “Twilight.” The soundtrack for the final “Twilight” film is set to arrive November 13, just three days before the movie hits theaters. Chop Shop and Atlantic Records put the Green Day track alongside contributions from Passion Pit, Feist and franchise co-star Nikki Reed (with husband Paul McDonald), among others.
“When we were asked to be part of the ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ soundtrack, we readily agreed because the films are an insane cultural phenomenon, and we have always been impressed with the way the ‘Twilight’ soundtracks are so carefully curated,” bassist Mike Dirnt recently told Yahoo! Movies’ MOVIEtalk.

The band announced that frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's well-being following his rehab stint is a priority, as they cancel their remaining tour dates in 2012 and postpone dates in early 2013. Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong entered rehab after a startling breakdown at the iHeartRadio Music Festival on Sept. 21, during which he bashed Justin Bieber. The band canceled tour dates to support their new album Uno!, and they've just announced that they'll be taking the rest of the year off. The band announced that they would be canceling the remainder of their 2012 tour dates and postponing appearances scheduled for January and February of 2013. Green Day is putting its upcoming tour on hold as the band waits for frontman Billie Joe Armstrong to recover during his time in rehab.
We had a feeling this might happen, as bassist Mike Dirnt previously said the band is putting Armstrong's health at the top of its priorities list. Warner Bros. Records Chairman Rob Cavallo had said that Armstrong might stay in rehab through Christmas and, while we still don't know when he's coming out, it seems as though it won't be any time soon.

-- Green Day is canceling the rest of its 2012 club schedule and is postponing the start of the 2013 arena tour.
Bass player Mike Dirnt says Billie Joe Armstrong's "well-being is our main concern" in the band's decision to clear the schedule through Feb 8.
He says in a statement Monday that Armstrong is doing well in his attempt to shake substance abuse problems that emerged publicly in September when the singer-guitarist had a profane meltdown on the stage of the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas.
The Grammy-winning punks also moved up the release date of "Tre," the third installment in a trilogy of albums released over a period of months. The album will be released Dec. 11, more than a month ahead of schedule.
